This is the second video in the series on servicing the Vauxhall Vivaro 2.0L 2007 Diesel Van. This time we change the gearbox oil. Again it's quite a lengthy video but I really want you to be able to do these jobs on your own vehicles after watching these.

After several derogatory comments made by a so called moderator on a Facebook forum I would like to point out that the oil used in this video is what was recommended by my local car parts supplier. This may not be the recommended oil for all vans. Please do not just buy this oil because it is what I have used. My Van is a 2007 with 172k miles on the clock so it is reasonable to expect different requirement to yours.

This is a good video giving people a good heads up practical advice. I like your emphasis on safety a good few years ago I attended the scene of a fatal incident where a jack had lowered onto a male mechanic. Very sad and traumatic for the close family please use a axle stand folks and take an extra minute to think a job out.

Thanks Mike. Unfortunately you see a lot of people using jacks on their own. They might get away with it 100s of times but it only takes it to fail once...

Hello, nice video! The Opel Vivaro has a tube sticking up into the engine compartment for filling gearbox oil. It enters the top of the gear-box. So you don't really need to use that plastic filler plug on the side. But you probably would like to use it for checking the oil level anyways....Required Oil-levels; There are different required oil-levels for the gear-box, dependent on engine type. For engine G9U 750, F9Q 760/762, F4R 720, F4R 820, G9U 730 you must use a special tool to measure the level, the workshop manual says. For G9U 630, M9R 780 you can fill until it overflows the filler cap on the side. The special tool is simply a bent metal wire you stick into the filler cap on the side. There is a drawing of it in the workshop manual, so that you can make it yourselves. It has marked two distances on it; A=19mm below the hole's lower level. B = 31 mm below the hole's lower level. The oil level shall be between these two levels below the filler hole lower edge. On mine there is a big warning label next to the filler hole, saying DONT FILL TO OVERFLOW. I don't know what happens if I do, but I won't try. I have this information from the Opel Vivaro workshop manual. :)
@ItsWhatIDo
@ItsWhatIDo Год назад
Yes there are quite a few variants which is why it is so important to read the manual before doing anything on these vans. I suppose the danger of over filling would be that you could blow the seals or pump oil out of the breather.

Nice video mate. Your van you use what oil you want! What you made is a informative video, people can take what they want from it. To make it easier next time try shoving a piece of garden hose in box up out the bonnet no need to remove wheel that way bud.
@ItsWhatIDo

Next time you do it if you get a meter or so of hose and a funnel you just put hose in hole and pour oil in funnel from outside wheel arch makes it a lot easier.

@ItsWhatIDo
@ItsWhatIDo Год назад
Gearbox oil doesn't really get that dirty as such. It doesn't get the heat exposure that engine oil gets. It can thicken though. When it does it doesn't work as well. If your box is worn then you can get metal contamination in it too which is why there is normally a magnet on the drain plug.

great vid but i looked in the manual and it says to check the level with a special tool? i have a 1.9dci any advice would be greatly appreciated
@ItsWhatIDo
@ItsWhatIDo 2 года назад
Most gearboxes are very similar in that they use the fill plug as a level plug too. The 1.9 might be different, I honestly couldn't tell you as I've never worked on one. The Golden rule... Follow the manual

i buy the gear oil cans with the longer pipes on the container, they go right into the hole, you still need to take the panel out though..
@ItsWhatIDo
@ItsWhatIDo 2 года назад
You don't really get a choice here unless you decant the oil into a different can of your choosing. Adding that little bit of pipe was an easy solution to the problem.

Hello. Thank you for video. I want to follow these steps on a Renault Trafic. Please tell me which are dimensions for metal washer that you used for drain screw. I expect I have to buy one in order to change the old one. Also, for filler hole, I see you put a rubber seal. Do you know, approximatively the dimensions? The rubber is regular rubber or it should be some high temperature resistant rubber? Thank you.
@ItsWhatIDo
@ItsWhatIDo 2 года назад
The metal washer is exactly the same size as the engine oil drain plug. If you ask your local spares shop they should be able to supply you with the correct size. That's pretty much what I did. The rubber seal on the filler was not changed. The spares shop did not have one so all I did was clean up the old one and then lubricate it with a small amount of oil. That worked fine.

Hi. Im a bit confused. You said 2.7L of oil to go into the gearbox? A certain motor factor has told me its 2.35L to 2.5L ? I have a vivaro 2007 1.9 cdti f9q 760 6 speed. Also, could i fill until the oil overflows out of the filler hole and let the level set itself? Thanks.
@ItsWhatIDo
@ItsWhatIDo 2 года назад
Mine is a 2.0L '57' plate and the workshop manual lists it as 2.7L. However that being said you can only fill it until the oil starts to come out of the fill/ level plug so the 0.2 - 0.35L really isn't something to get concerned about. As long as your vehicle is on level ground (or as close as possible) just fill it to the level plug and that should be fine.

2.7 on a 1.9. The 2.0l is fill to spill.

I wouldn't think it would be massively different. Most gearboxes on manuals are very similar in approach. The oil may be different but the principle should be the same.

Well it's been ok in my box since I put it in. However the people on the vivaro page on face book say it's wrong. It was the oil my spares shop recommended. I don't do very many miles in my van so any down sides to using standard oil may not be apparent for me. The process will be the same which ever oil you use.

I just changed the oil on my renault master after finding out the gearbox was completely dry and now my van is failing to start. Are the vivaros similar? I know my way around an engine and car but this has puzzled me
@ItsWhatIDo
@ItsWhatIDo 2 года назад
I can't see why changing the gearbox oil would stop your van from running... The only thing I can think is you have accidentally disconnected (or shorted) a wire from somewhere. Or possibly you've been unlucky and developed an engine fault at precisely the same time as you've done the gearbox. Have you got any fault codes or anything? Did you disconnect the battery? I know the book tells you to disconnect the battery but unless I'm doing something with the electrics I seldom do that.
@c4r5on88
@c4r5on88 2 года назад
@@ItsWhatIDo I know I'm completely puzzled by it. I had driven it parked it up changed oil and nothing. I over filled it and I'm thinking maybe by being over filled it's fouled a sensor in the gearbox maybe however I'm not sure what sensors are in it. I haven't left it over filled I'm in 100% certain iv not knocked anything. I didn't disconnect the battery as same as yourself I don't see the point unless it's something electrical. It's certainly going to drive me insane today trying to find out what happened
