i show you how to repair a briggs and stratton carburetor. i clean the carburetor, replace the gasket and diaghragm. finally i clean the air filter and then show you the lawnmower running.
yes ..I like rainman Ray for cars coz he shows every time he drops/loses the bolts... Only the truly confident in their abilities does that..He even says when he has had 4 day off with depression...
Quite a few years ago a good mate of mine found one of these in someones street side hard rubbish and gave it to me mainly because I kept nicking his! No idea how old it is. Another old mate serviced it and got it running. Since then, we’ve move to a bigger property. Recently it started to run a bit rough and stalling but I’m too sentimental to replace it! Thanks to your videos I’ve had a crack at servicing it myself and it is now running like a dream and better than when I first got it! Quite easy when you’ve got clear instructions! Thanks! Still plenty of years left in the old girl!
THANKS SO MUCH for creating this carburetor cleaning tutorial! My mower started surging real bad after running out of gas during operation (I presume some dirt found its way into the carb) and I was stumped. I looked at other videos and they appeared complex. Your video had my EXACT engine and explained everything perfectly, and my mower's back in top shape. Thank you! No more surging! You are a STAR!!!
Thanks. Could not have fixed my mower without the likes of you. I watched a load of RU-vid videos on these carbs 'running too rich', 'lumpy throttle control', sooting up spark plug, 'fuel leaking', 'not sucking up fuel unless tank more than half full', 'primer bulb not sucking fuel' etc. My mower was doing all of these things. I started off cleaning the carb with carb spray and changing the diaphragm and gasket for a non genuine version off ebay. This may have made it a little worse. Making a sandwich with the diaphragm between two gaskets made minimal difference. The problem was these plastic carbs are prone to distorting with heat and time making the surface that contacts the gasket uneven. I tried flattening it a bit with a sharpening stone and that did not help. Finally using the carburettor replacement fixed all the problems. If your carburettor is distorted get a Briggs and Stratton genuine replacement. They are not expensive
I bought my mower several years ago. It has always been a bit of a s*d! I've had it back to the dealer but that made little difference. I knew it was a fuel problem with lumpy running and being difficult to start and almost impossible to restart when hot. I followed this video and cleaned the carburettor and replaced the gasket and diaphragm. It's a different machine now. It starts easily whether hot or cold, runs well and tackles long grass with ease. If only I had done this years ago. Thanks for your easy to understand video.
This is EXACTLY what I needed! My little Briggs and Stratton push mower is running beautifully now, and I know NOTHING about small engine maintenance (but now want to learn more...)
Youve given me the confidence to service my lawn mower. Never done engines before. Ill get the parts needed including new primer bulb, governor spring that's broken and carb diaphragm plus cleaner. Then for the tricky bit...
From Mark. I enjoyed watching your video with the diaphragm and carburetor gasket replacement. At this time, I have my sister’s mower at my place for the exact same repair. The B&S engine (10T802) runs great for about 2 years and will promptly blow another gasket. I tried another carburetor and there was no change in the end result. Now I purchase the carburetor parts in bulk for my sisters mower and a Series 300 B&S engine that I have. Best Regards From KY. Cheers.
Hopefully you still monitor these comments - I just cleaned my air filter and I can't get the long crew to "bite" into anything. Where does that long screw thread into? It's driving me crazy, it should be dead simple! Thanks for your help if you see this! FOLLOW UP NOTE - after asking about where the long air cleaner screw needs to thread I figured it out - I removed the tank and carb assembly from the mower, then took the carb off from the tank and looked at where the long screw should thread into. It turns out that the hole was full of dirt (not sure how it got in there) so I cleaned it out with a narrow pick which took a while to get all of the dirt out until the screw threaded in enough. I tested it as I went with the carb off. Once the screw threaded in enough I put everything back together and onto the mower - the long screw seated fine and holds the air cleaner cover in place securely now.
Thank you for this excellent video for both cleaning up the carburetor and replacing the gaskets to fit it back onto the fuel tank. Not only are your instructions clear but you have a nice delivery that instills confidence that it will work. The result for me today was exactly that. The 4.5 horsepower Briggs and Stratton engine runs without surging anymore and my wife will probably stop expecting me to fix that hand lawn mower she brought back from the garage sale.
Awesome video. The instruction work for me on the first shot. Easy to understand and to do after watching this video. Just be very careful with plier to remove springs. Take pictures before disasembly. Thank you! You saved me 125$ the repair guy wants labour and parts.
excellent video.. 5 STARS I stumbled across your video looking to service a mower i bought off ebay. The oil dipstick screw wouldnt turn and the whle thing came out! (fixing screws were missing) managed to twist cap open, lubricated it a bit, put it back in and put 2 replacement screws (finally my collection of odd screws has come in handy) so the dipstick unit is now fixed and cap can now be turned and oil checked. quiet proud of my self! I hate DIY because something always goes wrong!! I even managed to clean the Air filter!! so now feeling confident I searched youtube and came across your video, and now after watchng it i feel confident enough to tackle a simple service !! (at this rate i'm going to put my local lawnmower repair shop out of business!!!) cheers mate
Thank you for this video. I have same briggs and Stratton engine in my Mountfield empress 16 and had changed the carburettor gaskets but broke my leg and shattered knee cap so had a delay finishing the project and when I came back to finish up for the life of me I couldn't remember which way the springs went back on. Really should have taken a picture but didn't anticipate starting the job one spring and having to finish it the next one lol. You're a star. Thanks again.
This is my first time at doing anything mechanical. As a result of watching your video a few times (3) I got a kit, cleaned the fuel tank (old fuel was syrup) cleaned carbi, new gasket new plug chnaged oil.......started first pull. woohoo. now onto the whipper snipper.
Great vid . A couple of things to note, the o ring on the carb should be fitted to the carb and clipped in place before it is put back on the mower. Also, if you put the black sump breather pipe on the carb before putting it back on the mower, it makes life easier.
Many thanks for your time and effort of this. most helpful. The only thing is when reinstalling the tank/carb to the mower, the O ring and its keeper seat into carb inlet.
Ohmigosh!!! I just found out that for years I've been a "go faster air filter" guy!! Oops! :-) Well filmed, nicely and patiently demonstrated and explained. Very enjoyable. Thanks!
sorry to be off topic but does anybody know a way to log back into an instagram account..? I stupidly lost my password. I would love any assistance you can give me
@Aydin Ira thanks so much for your reply. I found the site thru google and Im trying it out now. Seems to take a while so I will get back to you later with my results.
From Chicago IL. Million thanks for this excellent presentation. I have an older Jacobsen mower that looks very much like the mower you have described.
Just a couple of tips, I only ever use warm water and soap to wash out the air filters. And to get a proper seal take the o ring and retainer and insert them in your carburettor before putting it back on the mower.
Hello congratulations for the video that taught me a lot. But I noticed that in my opinion there is an error when you mount the carburettor with a free oring seal on the intake pipe !! I believe this must be mounted first on the carburetor with the ring of pastica that blocks it and only after inserting it in the intake pipe !! Otherwise this would not fit well by not closing and allowing the engine to suck in outside air. I specify that it is not a new controversy and only to avoid this error to others and forgive me for the translation made with Google translator. Greetings from Italy
The best "how to.." video I've watched ever..and I'v seen plenty. Very well presented, visuals are excellent, knowledgeable and no mindless chatter in between. Very helpful. Subscribed and thank you!
🥳🥳🥳 Watched the video one time, and cleaned the carburetor. 💪 When you said in the video, that you only need a descent socket set (or at least a socket set), I was like... Yeah that's already fixed then. Just got the best gift from my boyfriend, the biggest Barco socket set, he could find. 🥳😁 But anyway. First time ever, I played with lawnmower engine stuff, and you explained it very well, and our mover now works perfectly. I'm so proud. 🥳😎💪💖 Girls just wanna have fun. (and one thing... Why do you have Copenhagen 62 on your shirt? 😁 Yeah, I'm Danish...)
I really enjoyed watching your video especially your two Assistant/Inspectors ! I always clean and blow everything off with air gun "before" I take everything apart. That way all that dirt doesn't get in the carb or engine etc. (that's just how I am- it bothers some people) Also so much easier to work on from that point.
Thanks my Briggs & Straton started lsosing power after a few minutes of use. I changed the oil, bought a new spark plug and cleaned the air filter but that did not help! Alas I now know how to clean my own carburetor since I suspect that's where the problem exists.
I have other small engine equipment like honda, etc. But briggs and Stratton has always been the problem starting. I put fuel additives, fresh gasoline with stabilizer and run it regularly and still a pain!
Thank you for this video. I'm near the middle of this project now using this video. I don't much care for working with gloves on, on certain things. I like to be able to feel what I'm doing hence I end up with filthy hands! God made me "wash and wear", I'd suppose they'll clean. :-)
Great video mate. You made everything pretty simple to understand. I love Briggs Stratton mower and generator great and reliable. Just cleaned out my generator carb today hopefully tomorrow it will start with no issues.
Thank you for the excellent video. I have successfully followed your instructions to service my Mountfield SP470. One problem I still have is that the primer bulb gets sucked in after about 5 mins of running and the engine cuts out. If I pull the bulb back out and prime again, the engine starts and runs again for another 5 mins before repeating the cut out. any ideas what the problem could be? I have tried loosening the fuel cap in case that is the problem but that doesn't help.
I take the carb off and apart and use a garden hose to clean out all the ports and tank. Clean the diaphragm and gasket and rub a little oil on them. Blow dry with a hair dryer. Reassemble and cut some grass. Works every time unless the diaphragm is to far gone.
My neighbour had no place to put the law mover so he asked me to store at my place and I can use it too.... It is a BRIGGS & STRTON AND it always started at first pull ...winter come and we only used once a month But to make it start I had to put a bit of petrol in the spark plug hole of course I don't like to that all the time.... I dicided to clean the carburettor and put it back m ... the primary worked and it started after a few pulls But it stays on the high rev all the time ....I should point out that the liver that you disconnected the springs is short and it is easy to reconnect the tank rather mine has a long connection rod that to the springs connection little plate sems to be that on this kind of tank only has a little spring on the others I have seen two one bigger then the small one and they connect together....Well hope anyone can understand my problem and can give me an advise what to to make it start ......Thank you
Only things I’d like to add is that I’ve had much better results with the life of an air filter (foam type) when I use filter oil on it after I’ve thoroughly cleaned it. Also, you didn’t address the jets. Cleaning the main jet is imperative to a smooth running engine. Good video though!
Very grateful for you sharing your knowledge. Mower runs a min or 2 & dies, primer bulb sucked in. New parts, reworked, now leaking petro. Could it be the gasket or o ring not sitting right ? I'm hoping. Gonna redo it tmrw.
My filter screw does NOT tighten down any more. Vibrates loose so filter wobbles and is not efficient. Is it missing something? Does it fit/screw into a gromet because the screw treads are NOT damaged but just looking into the cup the screw doesn't catch any corresponding threads to seat & hold screw in place.. Do I put some loctite goop in the hole a create new threads?
Great video mate and thanks. What size are the 2 sockets you used to take the carb off the mower? Also, can you tell me what size of spanner I will need to remove the blade? Thanks.
That O ring and white plastic collar goes in the carb first .The O ring first and then the plastic collar which is an interference fit in the carb .It will suck air in the wrong place like that
Mine is a Rover mower with the Briggs engine.....when I watched this video I noticed that the diaphragm on yours doesn't have the pump linkage to a butterfly flapper in the intake tube that mine has.....maybe mine is an old model ..........I got it in the early 90's, still running.....your carb is a much simpler model than the 6 screw carb model that mine has.......mine also doesn't have the primer bulb for easy starting.
Hi, great video, and like you said, being cack handed and making mistakes comes with doing something that I'd never done before . Eventually, I got the job done, but the reving up and down is still present. I've also changed the governor springs too. I can't understand what I've done wrong? Could you help out?
