Interesting , most companies do not use exact 1/3 distance between legs any more (Gretsch always did--but most companies use the middle space between lugs -- uneven but stable. Pearl used 1/3 spacing, and I think this is why you did this. On other drums would you have just used the middle space between lugs?

Hey mate, I generally avoid middle space and stick with thirds unless matching vintage factory instal/set outs. The main reason is that-of centric symmetry both mathematically and with the physics of a drum that makes the most sense. Drilling holes in an uneven manner around a cymbal (for example) creates bad overtones due to the introduction of mismatched wave lengths colliding (rarely in harmony if at all). In a drum, this affect may be insignificant, but in my mind anything but centric has to be a negative impact on a sound. So over the years when R&D'ing drums to maximise tone and reduce bad overtones I've realised that much of what the industry knows and uses is not based on tone but circumstance or price point. One simple example is with lugs: hollow lugs absorb vibration, solid lugs enhance it; like wise less weight on toms increases resonance, more weight from lugs decreases it. The two wanted exception are bass and snare, where these things can make that drum sound better or fit for purpose. Ultimately the degree of seperation between floor Tom legs around the shell, likely really doesn't matter, but it would to me. That said, the vertical height of a FT mount away from the nodal point does noticeably impact the sound. Sometimes people like the impact, others don't, but it's in understanding how to manipulate the sound in these ways that makes drum design and drum making an art form to me. Kind regards Tony

Do you have a link or any info to what actual product/brand you are using for your Tom leg brackets & actual legs/brand you use?? & also can you use those leg mounts with a 22" bass drum? Thank You!!!

I have a question for you how do you get Fingerprints From the inside of the shell ?
@KillerDrumsTV
@KillerDrumsTV Год назад
Hey Phillip, not really sure the context, but I do talk about "fingerprints" left by the original builders. This is not actuall fi her prints of the builder, but clues left by them that tell me how something was or wasn't done. Over the years you can tell on say, a 60's Ludwig's drum, what quality of builder made that drum. And so on drums by other manufacturers they leave metaphorical "fingerprints" that reveal information to me. So I hope that answers your question and if not is interesting. Kind regards tony
