Hanging floor toms can be very marmite: you love them or you hate them. Unfortunately here at Drum Dog we fall into the latter category! Today we've decided to take the plunge and drill floor tom brackets into our 16" tom in order to convert it into a regular floor tom.
Join us on this nerve wracking journey where we use everyday tools to do an acceptably accurate job, and find out if there's any sound difference between the 2 mounting options!

Place painters tape in and out side of where you are drilling to prevent chipping

I’ve played “old school” kits where everything was hard mounted (rack toms mounted to the bass drum and the mounts right on the shells) and I’ve played bouncy, unstable hanging toms with bouncy, saggy rim mounts. I much prefer old school. There’s a much more profound sonic difference between head types than there is with different mounts. And I like my toms to be rock solid.

I did that same thing with a Tam Starclassic hanging tom, but I used Ludwig's Atlas mounts to do it. Just had to replace 3 Tama lugs with the Ludwig Atlas things - worked great!

That´s a good way to experiment without making any permanent modification. Very clever.

I did this following pretty much the same process, with one change. After drilling each pilot hole, I used the larger bit to start the hole just a little on the inside of the drum. Then I moved to the outside and drilled all the way through the shell. That way, the wood on the inside of the shell doesn't splinter when the drill breaks through, because it has already been cut. The pilot hole assures that the hole matches up cleanly from the outside to the inside. It's not too difficult of a project if you take your time and measure carefully.

A good experiment. Well done. The lack of resonance with floor legs also has another advantage:for practicing sound level is lower.

I prefer floor toms with legs because I find them easier to set up and position withing the drum set, and they are not unstable. I have a Tama Starclassic with floating 14" and 16" floor toms, both on the same stand, and I have to be careful with I take them off the stand because the stand becomes unstable as soon as I take one off. Yes, the floating toms sounded great in the studio, but when I'm setting up for a gig, I want the legs. It's also easier for me to move one floor tom than two floating floor toms on a stand. I also have a less expensive Pearl drum set that I put together using orphan toms. It has a 14" floating tom and a 16" floor tom, so I want to mount legs on the 14" tom. Thank you for your video.

Im surprised I didn't see this video earlier. Great experiment and i think the sound was much more resonant (to me) WITH the legs. I prefer floor toms with legs always anyway. It definitely would make me very nervous to drill a drum.

They make floor tom legs now with different type feet to sort any probs with resonance...can't afford em or a cheaper option? Place some dense foam or similar under your floor tom legs! the difference is massive..

GOOD BLEEDIN’ GAWD Nick!!!! That took some bottle didn’t it??!! Lol. Fair play to ya! I used to have a Pearl BLX Fusion kit with 10”, 12”, 14” and a16” mounted floor tom, was a right pain in the arse, always toppling over, so I actually stopped using it and used the 14” as the ‘Low Tom’ if that’s what you’ll call it as my wrist injury drastically limited motion round a 6 piece kit (I only play a 1 up, 1 down 10”& 14” config since around 1995 anyway) Now with my Masters MCX I have Optimounts on the toms, using a Gibraltar Side Rack and the 14” is absolutely rock solid and I feel it would easily hold a 16” without it drooping with the weight or toppling with the super steady side rack … Anyway nice work .. Now go change ya underwear!!! Haha!!! 👊🏻👊🏻

I actually wrote that comment before you guys started saying it was LESS resonant!!

Great experiment guys. Definitely great to watch and hear the sound difference you spoke of. I would cringe if I had to do this to my drum though 😂

For my 14inch tom, I converted it with as cheap trick, nothing definitive : I use an old snare stand. It really does the job ;)

We've done this in the past too, very cool trick, but makes for a very high floor tom 😅

I tried that too, but it chokes the sound way too much, I couldn't deal with that. So I bought a floor tom floating converter hoop with legs. Makes it a floor tom but still the benefits of being a floating tom. Works amazing and sounds amazing.

This hurts my heart. With the Yess mount it is so easy to get a clean job without leaving any of the old holes/mount.
@Eurodrummer666

It has less resonance, but I like when the toms aren´t shaking. Personal preference.

i too have Yamaha, but BCAs, and was thinking, why not flip the drum, and use the Yamaha mounts that (I believe) are the same hole sizes as the YESS mounts? This is what I am looking to do. Also, you can flip the badge on the BCAs, once you do, so the drum lokks original and not modified. Thoughts? Does Yamaha sell a conversion kit? Or do you have to buy it a la carte?

@@drumdog Followup question: What did you do with the remaining arm clamp / housing in the tom? Did you just leave it?

We removed it, which did leave 2 small holes, but barely noticeable.

@@drumdog Is it possible to have some sort of a "ring" or a hoop like on the air vents to cover those holes?
@johnstahrstartcleanfitwell1051
Sounds better & actually MORE resonant WITH legs rather than hanging action... I actually did that with my 15" Tom... that's actually a perfect size to convert to floor!!

Hanging Tom's are okay..better than pole through the drum..but drums on snare stand or legs is better...it's really not cool to have Tom's moving when your hitting them..I mean who would want that as a drummer lol!
