Thanks! Gracias! I love the R8, m'y first and now only rythm machine in 20 years. Now a quest for everybody: how to fix everything to send program changes to the R8 from ableton live (via MIDI of course) to Switch between patterns in the R8 using the session and clips in Live. ...Do I explain myself? It must be easy, I just need some enlightment.
Nice video! Have you had the experience that the R8 lags a bit behind when syncing to MIDI clock? I felt something was off and compared the timing of R8 MIDI notes directly sent by the DAW to the timing of R8 notes from its internal sequencer synced to the DAW. I find there is a delay of around 9 ms @ 128 BPM. So typically I will record the R-8 to audio on its own (not in a mix with other machines) so I can then nudge its audio track a little to correct the timing. Unfortunately Cubase does not offer MIDI clock timing correction options, the clock signal would have to be sent a bit ahead of time. Of course that is not an issue if you use the R8 as a MIDI slave/sound module, but then you lose the benefits of the sequencer and human feel settings.
That's definitely something which can occur. Even with other internal sequencers that are controlled by Cubase's master clock. It's been a while since I've used the R8 but it's definitely something to look into. Thanks for watching my video. Cheers!
@@friendlystranger9662 So far it seems there are two solutions, I have not yet tried any of them: 1. An independent hardware synchronizer that can create an anticipated sync signal (after some count-in) such as the "E-RM multiclock USB". 2. Possibly creating a new "MIDI device" in Steinberg's Cubase DAW allows you to define an offset for the sync signal.
@@LeadingMotive My current set-up is me running my R8 via MIDI through Roland SBX-1, it is connected to Ableton via USB which in turn controls my hardware synth also via USB. And I have to say that after playing around with SBX's sync delay in Ableton, the lag between the R8 and my synth is almost completely gone! The sync delay is at -22.9 ms (but I noticed that it needs slight tweaking when using different BPMs). R8 is my master clock. However, it's very unpredictable in terms of staying in Ableton's grid. It's a bit annoying but not that big of a deal I know that your original comment was about setting R8 as slave but from what I've read, it is, sadly, pretty unreliable in this case. I'm planning to use R8's internal sequencer and run it as master clock so I don't mind that personally. However, if it's a dealbreaker for you, you might consider buying R8M instead. From what I've read, the MIDI implementation there is far superior. E-RM Multiclock also seems like a great option
@@friendlystranger9662 Thanks for the tip! I do indeed also have an R-8m rack module exactly for this reason. But my desktop R-8 mkII has so many more sounds that I will never part with it. I hope to be able to experiment with Cubase's workaround soon.
Hi vain, thanks a lot for your tutorials. Do you know how to control the r8 parameters (pitch, decay, nuance, Pan) with an external midi controller? The r8 has cc but i can't find the right procedure
I think there is a midi editor available that allows you to do different things with the r8 on a pc. The data then is sent over a usb midi interface to the r8. But I do not know if it concludes cc information.
Great video! I have just purchased an R8, and I am syncing it, like you to Cubase. However, after about 5 seconds of being locked to Cubase, it says Midi Overload and I have to restart. Why is it choking, and is there anything within Cubase I should do to limit how much data the Roland is getting? Thanks in advance.
Strange... Does this occur while sending midi data from Cubase to the R8? I only had it clocked with my Daw. The only thing cubase did was sending start and stop messages to the R8.
I was thinking about doing a video on scope and macro mode. But first I would like to have an overhead camera system as it is easier when you have two hands available instead of one hand holding a cell phone and the other trying to push two buttons at the same time 😂
Hallo Jair en bedankt om mijn video te bekijken. Onze labelmanager heeft videos op YT gezet. Gewoon "Causenation" in de zoekbalk typen en scrollen. Groetjes!
