This video was amazing I am about to get my first BP so I went on Amazon and found everything I needed she did a great job explaining it without stressing me out with a lot of information. After going on Amazon if your on a budget but trying to do it right it came to about $125 before shipping. I hope this helped you on your journey to loving reptiles.

Looks good! I am so happy you have a thermostat! There are a lot on Amazon for great prices. Just a note I didn’t hear you mention, ideally you want to have your enclosure set up for a week prior to getting your BP. This way you can monitor your temps and make sure your UTH and thermostat are working. That’s because of exactly what you said about the thermostat being set high. One of mine for example has to be set at 108° to get a 90° reading! It took a few days to figure that out. You’re absolutely right that you don’t want that probe inside the enclosure, it’s too easy for your snake to move it away from the heat pad and then allowing your pad to overheat. Also a hygrometer measured humidity not temp. 🙂 Takeout containers made fantastic DIY free hides! As for BP’s soaking, I personally think it’s a good idea to have a dish large enough for then to soak. Yes it’s a sign of something wrong but BP’s can’t tell us what’s wrong so why not give them a way to communicate if need be? Your BP is absolutely adorable! Oh, aspen is awful for BP’s because it doesn’t good humidity and it can mold. I have to say I’m really impressed with how well you did your research and how well prepared you were! And I LOVE that table in the background.
@6strings735
@6strings735 4 года назад
You know, that is the best reason I have heard for the large water dish - give the snake a way to communicate IF something is wrong. And for many inexperienced keepers using fish tanks as cages with screen tops, improper humidity can be a lingering problem. I see from your first sentences that temperature controllers are important to you - amen, they should be among the first things people buy when planning on a reptile pet. I like seeing posts like yours, makes me think some of these reptile pets have a chance.
@simonsimon5694
@simonsimon5694 4 года назад
if you have your thermostat set to 108 and it’s only reading 90 in the tank then the ambient temp if definitely too low. ambient temp should be in mid 80’s so the heat may only has to heat the spot 5-10 degrees

Ate immediately and calmed down. The other 5 came with severe shedding problems and the smallest was so dry it fell like sand paper. So seeing how well the tub worked for my first BP. I transferred all 5 into tubs. They all immediately were able to shed and started eating again. At least for me the tub the way too go. My sandpaper ball python now feels normal.

Alina McPherson I don’t really consider a gun am extra measure. It’s honestly essential to me to know exactly what temp the warm spot is at. I put into consideration the substrate and the material of the enclosure between the heat mat and the surface as well. Bc if you set the thermostat at 92, the heat on the surface of the substrate is going to be much lower than 92. I usually have to set my thermostat to over 100 to get the warm spot to be 92.

They have safety features that protect the animal if the stat ever fails. The cheap ones can fail and the heat then remains in the ON position and can burn the animals or be a fire risk. Are holes that big safe for your snake exploring and possibly rubbing their nose on the hole area causing damage to the snakes facial area?

As long as you have a thermostat it should be okay

Hi :) You have a wonderful little snake there! A few things could be improved in the set up though: first off paper towel substrate doesn't support their burial behaviour, which they display in the wild and do so in captivity as well if given the opportunity. I would recommend a mixture of eco earth forest floor or coconut substrate (not aspen, since it doesn't hold humidity very well). UTH is not an ideal way of heating since it only warms the surface, but not the air temperature -I especially in combination with deeper substrate it's pretty much useless. Also I would definitely recommend to give your snake a much larger tub and more enrichment - you mentioned that your setup lacks branches and such. It is okay to let them exercise when handing but it's definitely better to give them the opportunity to climb on their own terms. It improves muscle tone and will encourage your ball to be much more inquisitive and curious on their nightly exploring.

toni Boni ball pythons don’t need that much humidity. In the wild they spend their time in day in termite mounds and come out at night. Termite mounds are hot and humid and to simulate that I would recommend putting a humidity box in the warm side of the enclosure. Also aspen is ok but can sometimes get stuck on the snakes food when feeding. If you want to learn how to make humidity boxes you can see how on Snake Discovery’s channel.

Ball pythons do not need to climb. If you see your ball python “climbing” then there is something wrong with your enclosure

@@karyna7662 that is a complete lie, I don't know where you gathered that from. They aren't an aboreal species like green free pythons that like to hang out on branches pretty much 24/7, but they do climb occasionally - we have studies which show that especially young males tend to hunt on trees and feed on birds as much as on rodents. Please widen the circle of your information sources!

@Kar S my ball pythons don’t climb a whole lot but at night I have seen my ball python climbing on her hides. So yes ball pythons do climb sometimes.

I'm doing some research and looking to get a baby ball python in July, how long would this size of a tub enclosure last a young snake?

I think I will make holes only on warm side so the humidity stays better. So like half of the box I make holes.

Do you find that the heat pad is sufficient for heating and ambient temperatures? I have tanks, but have a couple surprise noodles coming and need to do a quick, temporary setup.

Yes. Unless you have like 4 inches of bedding for like a bioactive set up then you’ll need a heat lamp but ball pythons are not a basking species so heat mat is just fine
