How to set-up a Dellorto PHBH carburettor on almost every Lambretta & Vespa scooter! - Part 1
The PHBH is possibly the most underrated carb for Lambretta & Vespa scooters, repeatedly overlooked in favour of more ‘exotic’ setups. Yet the PHBH is affordable, available, easy to set-up, and has a great balance of cost vs performance vs fuel economy. It’s the CBR600 of carburettors... a brilliant allrounder!
Plus, for the vast majority of scooter owners, there are some very repeatable ‘base settings’ which you can use, for around 90% of all scooters, in order to get your ballpark starting point to work from and go on to perform plug chops with. There are also some crucial mistakes you must not make, as these can kill an engine very quickly if not followed.

What a great video thanks for explaining in an easy to understand way. . Pretty much bang on with mine on my Imola 186. Apart from I’ve a 50 pilot. I’m now going to change to a 55. My needle is an x13 but on the top. I’ve also got a power jet and I run a breathe sweet filter. Right into the garage I go. The missus has just moaned but needs must 🤣🤣

Thank you for this, it sheds some light on a lot of things ! I'm trying to correctly jet a Honda CRM125 (same engine as the NSR125 save for the base jetting) outkitted with a 182cc Malossi (which purportedly likes to run even leaner than the 125 jug). The base carb was a PHBH28 which was fitted with a 45 pilot, 142 main, X57 needle, 40 slide and 50 powerjet, but the powerjet was making more trouble than it had advantages, so I upgraded to a PHBH30BS (R3478 which comes with a 50 slide and X41 needle. I'm waiting on a 300 feeder and AV266 bushing to replace the 268T 4-stroke atomizer which came stock with the 30mm and currently have a EV266 (it came with the 28mm which was outfitted from the factory. Dellorto UK have never heard of this kind of atomizer apparently), a 52 pilot and 142 main. Which combo of needle/slide would you recommend as the safest starting point in both cases (right now and once I've fitted the AV266) ? TY !

Great video Dan. The selection of over sized carbs goes back to when tuners & racers were sticking Mk2 34 mm Amal's on just about everything and we as young scooterists wrongly, wanted the same. Times have changed, fuels and two stroke oils have moved on as has what is now available to todays scooterist. But you still need a basic understanding to keep yourself on the road and not just blame whoever gave you the advice or sold you the part - you can't legislate for the stupidity factor. Keep sharing the good info's 👍

Hi, just watched your video, very informative. I have a Lambretta with a GT186 kit and expansion pipe. It runs great is pretty lively but suffers from poor running and 4 stroking at town speeds up to about 1/8 throttle. This is driving me mad as most of my trips are on 30, 40mph roads. It has a 30mm PHBH with AV268, 40 slide, 70 choke tube, 50 pilot , X7 needle 2nd clip from top. It was running an open carb but I have since fitted a BGM hose with foam filter, which has made no noticeable difference. How can I get rid of the low speed 4 stroke, or do you think changing to your jetting would solve the issue? Thanks Regards Gary

Carbs usually have one or the other. If it’s behind the slide it’s generally a mix screw, therefore turning out richens it up. If it’s in front of the slide, then it’s usually an air screw... so turning it out leans it off.

So here is where I'm at I have a LML engine on my Vespa Sprint with 190cc Pinasco Cylinder 60mm crank, Mukuni Vacuum fuel pump and a Dellorto 9364 VHST 28mm carb. At present I am on the 2nd of 4 notches for the needle but the graduation for acceleration is very poor as in , its either on or off, not great for touring. My thinking at the time was I need to select a different needle (D Types) which I am now trying to understand which is the import measure to get this more graduated acceleration, is it (the shank diameter 2.52mm D47 needle, the diameter tip 1.4mm or the cone length 26mm?) then as you say in your video if a lean needle how do I determine which atomiser is considered lean or rich and is my pilot 55??? I will open the carb to see what needle I have but am unsure of what stock pilot and main jetting values are out of the box. Any direction received would be great (or video). Peter (Melbourne)

Hello Dan, great explanations thank you. I was wondering, I have a GP200 with an RT225 kit, taffspeed expansion and a 30mm dellorto phbh. Initially I had a 55 pilot, x13 (2nd clip), 120 main and an av268 and it just really didn't want to idle when hot and the idle screw didn't really have an effect. I have used your other vid and changed the av268 to an av264 and it does sound better at tick over (plus the idle screw is effective which is a bonus lol) but it's very boggy when pulling away. Can you offer any advice please?

@drunkmunkey6969 2 года назад
Your main jet looks a little small, I’d try a 122/125. For the bottom end/tickover - are you running an air filter? What slide is fitted? How many turns out on the mixture screw?

@drunkmunkey6969 4 года назад
Mark John yes, it does give gains. It has a sharper throttle response on the road and small gains on peak power. But the point being, is that you can get that with a PHBH or even a smaller 27mm carb, if you tube your cylinder and exhaust first.😀👍

Start off with the same jets and see how it feels, you may end up with a slightly leaner setting in the end, but always better to start rich and lean off gradually.

Hi Dan Great vids for a novice like me, just a question i have a 28mm phbh carb fitted to my px via a reed valve set up, i recently took off the air filter but didnt alter the jetting now when at full throttle for a while as i shut the throttle down the engine continues to rev at what appears to be the same rate. I try to pull the clutch in and out and then try to blip the throttle but it seems unresponsive to the point the engine is screaming, i eventually switched the ignition off and let the scooter cut out . It could be the throttle cable or slide sticking but they seem ok when i check them out could it be any thing else before i start replacing the throttle cable etc . Bri

Hi, a friend of mine is having problems with his 1966 Lambretta Li 150 Special. It has a 175cc top end up grade. He is using a Dellorto PHBH 30 carb with 128 main, 100 pilot, 250 Tap, AV262 Att, 30 slide and x7 needle. He claims it was run sweet before throttle cable broke and while he replaced said cable stripped carb to clean and replaced rubbers etc. The bike will not now run unless on full choke and when choke is turned off, it bogs down and dies and will not run. To start again needs full choke and a squirt easy start. The plug is wet and black. Should I follow your basic settings, as you don’t seem to mention a 150/175 in any of your various tuning descriptions? Thanks in advance for help.

Hi Dan - great channel - I'm enjoying the videos 👍 Quick question, I'm looking at fuel flow rate to my phbh 30mm carb. I have a newish fast flow fuel tap (from Scootopia) but when I timed the minute's worth of fuel flow (holding the container same height as the carb), I only got 16 fluid ounces rather than 20 which is your quoted ideal (in fact strangely 16 fl oz was with the tap in the reserve position, in the normal position I ran it in I only got 14fl oz.) If we go with the 16 fl oz per minute (cos I'm happy to run in reserve position as I check fuel regularly on rides), any idea if this is worryingly low or would you consider that within acceptable range (80%) of the desired 20 fl oz? I don't want to start looking at potential carb issues if there's not enough fuel going in in the first place. Numpty question, but attaching the carb doesn't encourage (have a pull effect) on the fuel coming through the fast flow tap when I open the throttle fully does it? I guess I'm wondering if the 16 fl oz/minute on gravity flow increases if there's a carb guzzling it at the other end! Cheers in advance.
@drunkmunkey6969
@drunkmunkey6969 3 года назад
To answer the part about the carb, no... it doesn’t create extra flow. In fact, another way of measuring fuel flow is to leave the fuel pipe attached to the carb, undo the float bowl and test flow rate through the pipe AND carb. In terms of the 14/16 fl/oz... it’s all about how much fuel the engine commands, header pressure, flow etc. So maybe a standard 200cc with 22mm carb and clubman would be ok with that level, but perhaps an RB250 with race expansion and 38mm carb would not. So depending on your overall setup and the fuel demands of that engine, I might be inclined to try a couple of different taps and see which flows best 👍

@@drunkmunkey6969 Thanks Dan much appreciated. It's an LiS 150 but with a 200cc engine and a PM exhaust. Gonna take your advice and run without foam filter/tune accordingly and do some plug chops. The PHBH and PHBL are totally different carbs, you'll still use a 55 pilot to start, but the main jet will be more like a 102 to start testing with. Use the Atomiser and needle it comes with, start on the 2nd clip, and work from there with plug chops, etc.

Quick question on the needle/atomiser combos, you mention using a richer needle such as x2 with the leaner atomiser av264 what difference would this make if any against using an av268 on the leaner x7 or the av266 and x13 which I currently use. First I would ask... how is it performing, and what are your plug chops showing you? Second I would ask, where did you get these starting jets from... was it your own guesswork, or proper advice? Third I would ask... have you asked Chiselspeed what they would recommend for this exhaust and setup as a starting point? But in the absence of all that info, I would suggest that you need to go up on the main (around 120) and down on the atomiser (try an AV266). I'd also suggest you find out what the pilot jet is, and decide if it compliments the relatively rich 30 slide or not. Hope that helps

John Wilcox John Wilcox ok, what CamLam do there is go in with a big atomiser, but run leaner settings on everything else to compensate. Seeing as you have all their settings in already, try to work with what you have. The thing which is interesting in your first post, is that you said it was actually ok to begin with.... but then went off the boil towards the end. This might indicate rich running, and eventually your filter clogged up and your plug burned out. Clean up (or replace) the filter, pop in a new plug, and adjust the needle to 2nd clip. Do some plug chops, focus firstly on 1/4 and 1/2 throttle, and that should help. If too lean, you can use a half clip spacer under the needle to get a 2.5 clip setting. 👍

Omg this is a lot of important Text and Stil basic mistakes 🤔😐😶 a lot of oldschool "knowledge" Talking about setting a carb and not about proper fuel supply is not even A bad joke, its irresponsible and dangerous. It might harm/hurt people 👎 Why would you do that? You cant set a carb with fuel starvation, so thats the point where you start talking about setting carbs. Perhaps the correct AS would also work, with enough fuel 😉😉 Missing info: 0) fuel tap! 1) fuel pump needed to be for sure on the safe side = having enoigh fuel not always close to fuel starvation. 2) needle ventile is to small 300 is needed You can not set a carb when fuel is not provided properly. Wrong info 1) slide closing not possible, throttling needed. Simply wrong. Only if your carb is not set correctly and/or you have fuel supply troubles Even a correct set SI carb can of course take slide closing 😉 Its just a myth cause people dont set the carbs right (and/or do not ensure fuel supply) 2) AV is the WRONG atomizer. it causes heavily 4stroking in low rev, which can not solved with any jetting. It totally cuts the phbh potential. AS is the correct one. It is NOT too lean (perhaps fuel supply troubles hits in 😉😉) if set well and enough fuel is provided And dont u wanna explain things a bit with some hardware instead of only hands? a prettty & boobed chick ok 😜, but a dude...?! People might not get all info and fall asleep 😄😉 the correct order: 1) proper fuel tap 2) mostly fuel pump mounted 3) correct size fuel needle ventile 4) THEN setting the carb 4 without 1+2+3 will never work 😉 it may, cruising from A to B but someday a situation comes where the still wrong setting will hit in. ALWAYS be on the SAFE side. Use the best tyres, ensure more than enough fuel, use proper shocks etc. thats at least my approach. greetz FMP

mista FreakMoPed ... please leave me some time for video part 2 😂😂👍 There is lots more to come... This video was just to give people a starting point on jetting a Delly carb for use on a Vespa or Lambretta... not how to setup the entire scooter. 😂 We disagree strongly on some points, fuel pump is NOT necessary, AV atomiser IS the correct one (with X7/X13/X2 needles i discuss). But we agree 300 tap is required. I will be discussing that when I give specific jet ranges for certain setups in a coming video. Sorry I couldn’t provide a booby lady for your attention, but I seem to have retained your focus regardless.... 😂😂👍🍻
