This dedicated DAC lets you enjoy high-quality, distortion-free, artifact-free, low noise, and high-bitrate audio playback from your Raspberry Pi single-board computer. A DAC (Digital to Analog Converter) is a device that takes digital audio (like an MP3 or WAV files) and converts it into an analog audio signal that can be readily understood by headphones or external speakers. A HAT is an anagram for Hardware Attached on Top, it refers to boards that easily plug directly on top of and improve the capabilities of the target board. A Stock Raspberry Pi Single Board Computer has Audio Output that comes out through the Headphone Auxiliary Port or through any of the HDMI Ports (which are visual and audio interfaces). This is perfectly fine for everyday use. However, if you are building a slim device that can deliver immersive media to high-quality speakers or headphones then these two default audio outputs are not up to scratch. That is where the IQaudio DAC+ HAT swoops in for the rescue. The IQaudio DAC boards (there's more than one type!) are the simplest and Raspberry Pi Foundation Officially Supported way to add crispy, refined, honey-dripped audio to any Pi project. In combination with Volumio, an open-source Audiophile Media Player OS, you can be up and running with a high-quality music playback system really quickly. Volumio officially supports the Official 7 Inch Raspberry Pi Screen, providing a great UI. It also provides remote control through the WIFI and Volumio Phone Application. Long live Zyzz. If you just want to use Raspberry Pi OS with your IQaudio DAC HAT the configuration will be explored here too.

Great tipp of you to shut all other audio ports off, this works smooth once your pi is registred by the system. To do this for some reason the command line dtoverlay=iqaudio-dacplus needs to be changed to dtoverlay=hifiberry-dacplus. After that change my board was registred as well

Thank you for this clear and informative explanation. I'm looking to make a ROON PI endpoint so will follow the ROON linux software rather than the Volumio install process. However thank you very much for explaining the HDMI override and config TXT. Essential info. Brilliant. Did you have a favorite case for this arrangement? Heat reduction required? Some DACs run hot I've heard.

First off, many thanks for all your excellent videos. They have always been very information packed, presented is a most straightforward manner and really useful to me. The setup you have presented in this video has worked perfectly, I could not have done it by myself. However, I have this system (RPI 3B+ and IqaudiO DAC+ with the music on an external hdd) and want to put it in my motorhome to be used without any internet connection. I live in the southwestern US where it's mostly mountains and deserts and I often camp remotely. Is a network-free solution possible? If not with this specific equipment and software, is there another way to do it. Many thanks, Tom Slover, Las Vegas, Nevada USA

With the Official Screen set up you can control it directly without the network. If you want to control it via your mobile would be very tempted to put a Waveshare 4G HAT on top of the set up as it currently stands. This could then be run as a Hotspot and provide your set up with access to the internet (I may be recommending this just because I've been doing a tutorial on it as we speak). Thinking about it, you could also create this Hotspot from your mobile phone and have it provide internet to your Raspberry Pi when your on the go in your motorhome (worth testing that out beforehand). These set ups are also great ways to just play digital music. So if you have a Hard drive (full of already downloaded music) you can plug it in and get it playing real quick. Then you won't need the internet. Also when you are at home you can scrape all the song details like Album covers and lyrics using the Volumio OS. I hope this covers all the bases, Kind regards and thanks for you kinds words, Tim

Excellent video, this got me up and running with good audio on my pi4 with no issues. I do have questions though: Which stand-offs are you using between the screen board and pi? (I am guessing the ones that come with the screen) Which stand offs between the pi and dac? (I have been trying to work out if they are one of the options sold at Core Electronics)

Is it better if I the signal is sent from DAC to the amplifier in a digital format rather than analog? Or it doesn't really make a difference? For example my amp has digital in (coax or toslink) However I read somewhere that toslink max bandwidth is 384kbps, but when you listen to FLAC it can go over 1000 kbps . Not sure if that would be an issue?

This feature is available in a simple way if you enable MyVolumio.

So this HAT outputs a dedicated headphone amplified signal and a differential output in parallel to phono/RCA line level output. If your speakers are not ultra high power this output will do, otherwise an external AMP will be required. Hope that helps 😊

I reckon you will be fine. Check all the amp requirements of the screen, pi and hard-drive to see your not maxing out the available amperage. You could always power the hard drive via a power supply. I want to improve a little how i hear music. This days i install Mopidy in a rpi 2. I connect throug the headphone connector to a Edifier c2 2.1. But i read that the quality of the rpi headphone is bad, and im now trying to hear music from Qobuz, etc. So i want to play better. Im thinking to buy one of this Pi-DAC+ Pro vs Pi-DigiAmp+, and i want to know if you can help me to choose. With one i have amp (but that amp is better than the edifier?) and if we dont consider the amp... as DAC which is better? Thanks
@Core-Electronics
@Core-Electronics Год назад
You'll instantly hear a better result from either of those DACs over the Auxiliary (Headphone) Raspberry Pi Port when you use headphones. If you want to listen using Headphones I recommend using Pi-DAC as the Pi-DigiAmp+ doesn't have a Auxiliary Port. Both use Texas Instruments DACs (PCM5242 DAC vs TAS5756M PowerDAC) so you know the quality is there. You can google and dive into those DACs to figure out exactly which one you'd like better but the quality. Undoubtedly they will be similar 😊 most important to know what application your going to use it for and that the DAC Board has the appropriate connectors.

I use the USB interface in ASYNC mode, it's free and works flawlessly. My DAC is a Topping D70 Pro Sabre that plays marvelous: I wanted to have 12V trigger but a cheaper DAC like an SMSL D-6s would have played as nice. I used to have a Raspberry Pi 4 but i replaced it with an HP ProDesk 600 G5 DM: It is always on, runs straight MPD (Music Player Daemon, that's what's under the hood in Volumio!), RompR in a podman/docker container as MPD client (web interface). I run a couple of other VMs / Containers too, like Home Assistant.

how to put music on the card ?
@Core-Electronics
@Core-Electronics Год назад
You may find it easiest to put music onto a USB-Drive instead of trying to split the Micro-SD card into two partitions. Partitions are an option however, one to run the OS and another to store the Music. But A USB Stick/USB Hard Drive/SDD Drive will definitely be faster and easier to sort.

An 24bit ADC would be more useful. You could record high resolution uncompressed audio to an SD card. Play back is easy.

I'm a newbie at this and might get roasted for this but how does this stack up to a didgione dac

Both are well reviewed and great systems to get rad audio out of a Raspberry Pi Single Board Computer. I haven't found any direct comparisons between the two systems but my preference is with the IQaudIO DAC+ in regards to price, larger community and worldwide availability.

Dont forget to tell that you have to pay for good sound quality with Volumio since the Volumio 3 is release.
@Core-Electronics
@Core-Electronics Год назад
My understanding is the Paid version gives you access to other feature, but not in regards to improving sound quality. There is discussion on the forums about the difference in sound between Volumio 2 and Volumio 3 which is apparent (but you can always choose which version you'd like to use) - community.volumio.org/t/volumio-3-hosed-the-best-feature-of-volumio/51777 Bounce back to me if I've got that wrong

Sorry if this question is a dumb one: Have you tried installing the Volumio OS on a PI?

NEVER delete lines from code or configuration files. ALWAYS comment out. NEVER modify lines of code or configuration files, OR add lines of code, UNLESS you add a comment describing the source, reason, etc.

Could you recommend a better DAC HAT then? If so, in what aspects is it better than the one mentioned in this video?

Why not just use Bluetooth and save money. For a dollar or two you can get a Bluetooth MP3 Decoder Board.

Because it's redundant. If you don't care about audio quality at all, that you even suggest such things, might as well just simply use Pi's built-in audio output. Save another dollar or two.
