🎬 ON TODAY'S MANUAL: Live monitoring is something necessary to assure a good performance for musicians. The problem? Yeah.. Sometimes they can get pretty expensive and we're living the greatest economic downturn of human history right now so.. They don't really get along together. But if you still want to have some live monitoring options for cheap, there are some budget methods available! Today I'll show you what me and my band, Supernova Andromeda have been doing for the last online gigs/lives in studios we've played. It's a pretty cheap solution that delievers headphone monitoring for all of us with a general overview of the band's sound through a small mixer, and a small headphone amplifier, good enough to listen to what you're playing and do not let band members get lost in a mess of noise. The best part of it, in my opinion, is it's pretty portable, fitting into a little backpack that we can take everywhere - and it's under $150! (Of course it depends on what you need/want).
🎥 Here's my band's show I've mentioned if you'd like to check it out. If you do so, it'll help us out a lot! (:

🎸 So who are you? You weirdo hipster 🎸 I'm Victor Budin ( vibudin_?h... - Instagram), a musician from Brazil. The most notable of my music projects is my power trio band Supernova Andromeda ( a_supernova... - Instagram) - my shoegaze/indie/alt rock band where I explore shimmery and fuzzy sounds from the 90's to produce my own music. I have two other projects, Magna Carta cover band, witch covers rock from all ages in an alternative rock way; and Casus Belli, witch hangs around Stoner/Doom metal. If you'd like to check out one of the bands and follow them on social media, it'll help me out a lot! I'm a big fan of the underground scene from Brazil and the world, and I want to show a bit of this universe here to you - Besides, I love talking about these genres that are so important to me since I grew up listening to them: Indie, shoegaze, Alt rock, Doom and Stoner metal. I love exploring all kinds of gear available to create alternative music. Thanks for watching! 👻

Hi everyone! If you'd like to check out a more modern take on how I'd work with headphone monitoring for live gigs or band practice, here's a newer video of mine: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-JB_LtcHmqOM.html Thanks for watching (:

In a quest to protect my hearing during rehearsals I selected a small camera microphone with 140dB SPL that I feed into IEMs using a small recorder. The mic will pick up the whole room. I will be wearing a large sound muffler made by 3M that reduces the sound level by 35dB. I will look stupid but I think this will be a good experience. I’ve tried something similar with a lapel microphone and just the IEMs I have but there’s still too much bleed. Looking forward to testing this at next rehearsal. It is similar but just for one person.

You did a great job with this video, it's some great heads up thinking to bring a splitter for the vocals! Thanks for making this!

great video. Do you think instead of the mixer, can inreplace it with the scarlett 1818 focusrite interface? will ir work?
@manualofalternativemusic
@manualofalternativemusic 2 года назад
Thanks (: no problem! Simply connect the main out to the L R main in on the headphone amplifier. This smaller Behringer model I’ve used isn’t packed with such feature, but there are bigger models (HA6000 for example) that do. It’ll work flawlessly. Use balanced cables to connect, I think the Scarlets don’t take unbalanced outs.. I might be wrong though, I suggest taking a look at the manual to make the connections using the right cables.

Nice simple solution. However you'll usually find that each performer will need their vocals/instrument to be much higher in the mix than the other instruments. Does this system allow for this?
@manualofalternativemusic
@manualofalternativemusic Год назад
Hi there! Sorry for the late reply. Thanks, it’s indeed a simple way to get some monitoring. Unfortunately not, this system is very straightforward, all it’s capable of is to send the same mix to every headphone, so the band needs to get to a comfortable agreement on how it sounds before going live or adjust it while in between songs maybe.. I prefer leaving it as it is since the beginning to avoid problems. If you want a system with a “more me” kind of function, you’ll need a more full-featured headphone amp, like the Presonus HP60 or, on a cheaper side, a Behringer Powerplay ha4700. These two units have an auxiliar input so it allows for you to set something like that up. There are many ways to use the aux input of a headphone amp for the “more me” thing: ranges from a simple system that accepts an instrument cable straight from your pedalboard and you can blend that into the mix (not all units can do this as far as I know), all the way to having an individual headphone mix for every musician on the band - so it depends on how you’d like to approach this and how much budget the band has to spend. Feel free to ask anything (: I’m not an expert but I’ve been looking into this for some time 😅

Hi, Thanks very much - this was exactly the information I was looking for! Is it possible to setup the live monitoring as you show and also connect to a phone/MP3 Player/laptop so we can also listen to a backing track at the same time?
@manualofalternativemusic
@manualofalternativemusic 2 года назад
Glad it helped! Sure, you can connect your playback device through a trs cable into a Line In on the mixer as you would with a keyboard for example. Probably you’ll need to adapt cables or buy extensors, but you should be able to do it no problem

what if we need 8 people to monitor the band? can we use splitter to split the phone output?
@manualofalternativemusic
@manualofalternativemusic Год назад
Then I’d recommend getting a bigger headphone amp, these come commonly as rack units. There are many 8 channel headphone amps available, for example the Mackie HM800 or the Sterling 8 channel headphone amp

are there headphone amplifier that can cater 10 headphones at the most? because im plaaning to assemble a home full band instruments but since it is not allowed to play loud in our neighborhood, im thinking we can just all play all together with just using headphone amplifiers. is that possible?
@manualofalternativemusic
@manualofalternativemusic 2 года назад
Yes, totally! That’s exactly how I rehearse with my band. If you want to do this cheaply, I recommend buying the HA8000 by behringer, it’s a good unit (there’s some noise on the headphones out, but for rehearsing purposes it’s not a big deal). You mentioned a scarlet 18i8 in another comment, right? Hook it up with an adat (if you need more channels), set it all up on your DAW and send your main outs from your audio interface to the headphone amplifier (: it’ll work really good, and if you’re using e-drums it’s even better, no noise whatsoever. If you need more than 8 headphones, maybe get yourself a pair of HA8000s, there are many options out there for headphone amplifiers and many ways to hook them up for silent practice. It’s a very convenient solution I must say (; if you need anything else feel free to comment and ask again, it’s hard to write everything in only one comment to answer you back hahaha.
@dgmixvlog7480
@dgmixvlog7480 2 года назад
@@manualofalternativemusic Great. I see. That is a great help for setting up. Yes will setup in my DAW. And yeah u ar right, e-drums are better since no much noise than acoustic drum and can edit the sound better.. I'm just worried about what you said now about having some noise in headphones out for ha8000. coz actually i need more of a clean sound output. do you have any better recommendation than ha800?
@manualofalternativemusic
@manualofalternativemusic 2 года назад
Glad I’ve helped 😁 there are more high end headphone amplifiers yes, the Presonus HP60 is by far excellent, it’s already way better than the Behringer unit and isn’t much more expensive. There are also other units, like the Sterling audio SHA8 or the Tascam MH-8. Here in Brazil the presonus HP60 is tad expensive, so people usually go for the behringer units, they became kinda the “standard” way to deal with headphone distribution but simply because they’re not expensive. Gear in Brazil is very expensive by the way.. Since these cheap units are like, everywhere, unfortunately we’re kinda forced to deal with noise 🥴 anyway, I’m rambling. Hope you find something that works out for you (:
