Good stuff Ed. I like videos like this that are quick and straight to the point. All the UA stuff is great, I have the Twin USB and a PCIe OCTO. Their Analog Classic SW plugins are excellent for in the box and what lead me to wanting to go hybrid and start experimenting with analog outboard gear, Mic pres, EQ Compression etc. The Unison pre's in console are really cool too a 610 on DI'd bass, a Friedman BE100 for guitar...pretty convincing emulation and I have a wall full of real tube amps :) Keep up the good work!
@@EdThorne I just slowly started with Warm Audio WA-73 was the first, then a WA-76, EQP-WA and WA BUS-COMP. I just got into 500 series too (Purple audio SweetTen chassis) and have the SSL VHD PRE. I don't do no more than 2 mic's/DI. I have an 1824c that I use if I need to record more than 2 at a time. I also don't do analog summing yet so I only need stereo pair out. I do have a Samson S-Patch 1/4 balance 48pt patch-bay and an ART XLR 16 patch-bay in different racks with snakes between the 2, overkill at the moment as I usually use the Twin and its one the top riser and easy to get to haha.
Shawn Lutz Sounds like a great set up. Have you got stereo EQPs? I love the Buss comp but i find it rounds off the top end slightly so always needs an EQ boost afterwards. I was contemplating stereo WA-EQPs to follow in the signal chain.
@@EdThorne I just have a single EQP at the moment. I did leave space in the rack below the one I have after liking it. So I may end up with another one eventually, would be cool to leave em on the 2 bus. I'm planning on SSL, API and Neve chains in the 500 series form Pre/EQ/Dynamics so I'll probably grab those first. I'm just slowly acquiring the pieces of the recording puzzle and having fun in the process.

@@EdThorne I’m still experiencing a bit of that. Also I cannot figure out how to record low latency. I cannot lower my buffer length on the daw with the twin x. Once I do it starts crackling completely and can’t even record. It’s a nightmare. One step at a time though
@@shlomishanti Turn off software monitoring in your Daw, and monitor using Console, as explained in the video. Hopefully it makes sense. You shouldn’t need to adjust buffer size or anything. And your Apollo will automatically sync to the sample rate of your DAW.

Thanks for showing how to add the click but I’m trying to figure out how to route my signal in logic on the Apollo x6 interface like this : 1. input 1 goes out of output 1 2. Input 2 goes out of output 2 3. Inputs 3 comes out of output 3 4. Input 4 goes out of output 4 5. Output 5 & 6 is the backtrack from my DAW 6. Output 7 is a click from my daw 7. Output 8 is a backup vocals stem from my daw all indépendant from eachother not via the headphone jacks I saw this video and it shows you how to add headphone mixes and send effects and axes to them but how do I tell it to send out of specific ouptups on the back simultaneously? I'm trying to use this interface in a live setting to output individual signal of 4 live mics, and 4 other individual outputs sending signals from my daw. If you could help me with this I'd really appreciate it

You do go rather fast, and I think I was only able to follow along because I have been struggling to figure this out on my own already for some time. I actually had tried using virtual channels as you show, but I wasn't confident until finding this video, that virtual channels were how it was supposed to be done. It's fucking sad how poorly UA documents their hardware (and software), and seemingly all they want to do anytime they have your attention is hype their plugins, or lately I think they get paid overtime for saying "Accelerated Realtime Monitoring".
I feel that, Robert, about UA's documentation. And on top of that, there are quite a few counter-intuitive aspects to the labeling and layouts of Console. There are so many DSP interface control softwares by other brands which could easily do things like, "hey I want my monitor mix & the knob for it to also happen on line out 3-4 so i can have a sub or additional monitor pair active simultaneously" .... but they seemed to have overlooked these basic things. it's sad mainly because they offer such masterful DSP.... that these types of things should be a given . peace y'all

Hi there, thanks for watching, I’m glad it was useful. Individual kick, snare etc would require individual Virtual channels. This is slightly limited depending on your device. I have four channels (2 pairs) on my Twin and another 8 (4 pairs) on my X6 (I think).
Select Apollo as the output device on the app. This is likely by default to assume inputs 1&2 on Apollo. You can then assign these in Console as Virtual Channels and your mic pre inputs 1&2 to channels 3&4 in Console. If not you’ll need Loopback software.
That was one good tutorial! Thanks for that. Once you re-route your DAW's output to those virtual channels though, won't it stop coming out from your monitors as well? How do you keep both your monitors and headphone cue mix at the same time?
All in Console. Your mix sends are viewable in Overview (too left under Menu) by default and your cue sends are in the little Sends window or viewable in Sends (top left menu again). Make sure your Virtual channels are viewable in Menu-View-Show/Hide.
I can't remember what options are available in Console for the Apollo but it's likely to be stripped back because it has few ins and only monitor outputs.
Thanks for this video - I have a question regarding a Desk recording/Zoom type setup. I am trying to send microphone audio from Analog1 out of Line3 into a DSLR camera. I dont want to monitor the audio however in my main speakers so there isnt a feedback loop. Is this routing setup possible?
Hi man, my new virtual outputs are not available when I go to logic and click the drop down menu to choose the new renamed linked virtual output. I've tried restarting Logic but the issue persists. I do have other outputs in Logic named 3-4, 5-6 but cannot see the new renamed output set in the console. Any clue?
The output channels can’t be named in Logic (I don’t think), and they definitely don’t sync up with Console names. You have to remember the channel numbers and patch accordingly.

Sound is not coming through my headphones, I have Apollo twin x thunderbolt-Protools Studio? I’m trying to work only through my headphones no monitors…
My monitoring balance has been off for a few weeks. I can only hear my voice (when speaking live into the mic) out of my left earphone. Everything else works in the left earphone, and when I record with my mic and play it back, it also plays back through the left earphone, indicating that it's a balance issue only in the monitoring. I didn't change anything to make it this way, I just set up my PC in a different spot and it started doing this. When looking at the console, the left and right settings are equal. Can't find anything on it online. Any tips?
I use Ableton. I am trying to listen to my MIDI input without latency through the DAW, by going through Console (Apollo Twin). Not sure how to go about it.
The whole point of the Apollo system is to monitor through it. The RTL through your DAW is likely to introduce latency. Monitor with effects through console in sub 2ms latency (inaudible) instead!
@@EdThorne thanks a lot, i figured it out. It was some setting in the DAW actually. There is a tick box for reducing latency in Ableton, which i hadn't seen. The latency actually came from the Delay Compensation. It had nothing to do with Apollo
great video! question: why the sound coming from a "chrome browser" (like this youtube video) sounds only on the right channel of the monitor output? (i assigned virtual outputs as well and any music app or anything else sounds stereo like it should but the browser audio only ouputs on the right channel... what i'm doing wrong? (i switch to my mix pre-6 and it sounds perfect in stereo (from a browser or any other app) ...

THANK YOU, but i tried to do everything in the video in Console. I got Hung up on clicking Cue outputs in console. There is no Cue 1 like yours shows. So setting it up in mine is not going to happen because i don't understand yet. Also when i Click Logic preferences it says Settings not Preferences like your video shows. was there and update since your video was released? and things aren't the same? or am i missing something in settings?
hi there i just got a ferrofish B4000+ and im trtying to set it up in ableton 11 using my apollo twin x but i dont see line 3/4 its only mix and hp. i have added virtual channels 3/4 but when i go to cue outputs it doesnt show up.any ideas please. cheers

Got a question for you: yesterday we were recording a guitar through the hi-Z input of an x8 Apollo and it clipped all the time, even when the gain knob was completely down. We couldn't find a way to solve this internally console without using a unison preamp. But this we don't want, because the preamps don't work with UAD MON instead of UAD REC. We want to record just the dry Guitar signal. Any ideas? best regards felix
Hi Felix. A DI with a pad button would help attenuate the hot input signal. You’d have to connect via XLR preamp for phantom power, and then ironically you’d also have another pad stage… this video may help: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-HeE57eYXjF8.html Also, the UAD MON/REC is easily turned on and off (click the red/blue button) and can be used with all input types (XLR, Jack, and Hi-Z). No need to run a Unison pre.
@@EdThorne thx Ed, we also ended up using outboard gear to attenuate the signal. Sad, that there is no option in console for that, only with an attenuation with a unison pre, that’s why I mentioned it before. The problem seems to be an issue for many users. Just went through the uad Facebook group. Another question came up yesterday: When just monitoring the input on a channel in console (UAD MON selected), while using it with an insert, is there a way to monitor the recording signal (without insert plugin) on the meter and not the monitored signal (with insert plugin)? Where can you see the level of the signal that actually gets recorded, when using UAD MON? Any other possible then in your DAW? Would be great to have this option in Console - so I wonder whether this possibility exsists? 🤔 cheers, thx again and all the best Ed!
@@felixdorn21 Hmmm, that’s a good question that’s never occurred to me. I believe (and I will check this with my contact at UA) the LED displayed input on the interface is Unison integrated (so post) but PRE-Console inserts…
When configuring outputs in Ableton (to send to the newly created Stereo Virtual channel), there doesn't seem to be a way to confirm which console input/Ableton output number(s) to set it to. Is there a way to tell this within Console, so I can use those specific Ableton output numbers? Looking at the I/O Matrix, it appears as though my DAW output virtual channels are 7/8, but when I route the out from Ableton to 7/8, I get nothing...

Im truly so frustrated. I have try absolutely everything and can't seem to figure it out. I hear myself double, from pro tools and the console app, and every video I watch they show the "cue outputs" option but for some reason mines shows different. From left to right your buttons go like: Cue 1, Mix, Mono (none) hp, line 3/4 on mine console app only shows: on source: Hp, mix on mix side: Mono I have the Apollo twin heritage if that matters.
Turn off input monitoring in ProTools. The idea of Console is to monitor through your Apollo (with zero latency). Cue1 is your HP mix (there’s only one available with the Twin). Like 3/4 may not be showing depending on whether you have Alt speakers selected in Settings.

Make sure the blue/red dot on the channel strip is blue. This means you will hear the processing in your monitoring but it won’t record with the effects processing on. In MON REC mode (red dot light) it will record with the processing.
Im having trouble re-amping a DI guitar track I downloaded. I set the outputs in the Master track to Line 3 which is where I have my Apollo Twin going out to the Reamp box. routed the DI track to a new track to record and when I play back the recorded reamped track it sounds really bad. Like Im using a distortion pedal with the distortion all the way up. I tried turning down the input signal level down on my reamp box but when I play it back it still sounds like a crappy distortion pedal in front of my amp. Another thing is I dont see my meter rising for Line 3/4 in Apollo Console. Are my I/Os just set up wrong?
That'll likely be because you're creating a continual loop if you're sending it off the master track. Send the guitar track channel output to Line 3 instead. Then loop Output 3 back into input 1 with a cable, set up another channel to record the incoming audio from input 1. Also make sure no monitor processing is armed and recording in Console.
Man, you really know your Apollos! I just received the Apollo Twin X Duo.... it seems so cumbersome the learning curve because there is no much compressed to the point info.... I CAN't make it sound better than my old Scarlet Solo V2, which is incredible.... The Scarlet super punches the SM7B so cool by itself that I can't believe it, really, it sounds as if it was a super studio.... and the SM7B sounds like it should, that deep cool dark sound, while the Apollo, super noisy and full of mids and highs..... horrible metallic sound. Nevertheless, I know the Apollos are great, if i turn it on it just inserts a horrible "hisssssss", while the Scarlet, really is able to get the cool sound of the shure SM7B..... Where to start to learn??? (at least I have an idea now with your channel... subscribed 👍 )
Thanks Marco, I hope the video was helpful. The noise might be a gain thing. The Scarlet only has about 50dB of clean gain before the preamps start getting noisy, but the Apollo has clean gain up to 65dB. The higher gain levels do bring out those characteristics in the SM7b, I’ve noticed this too.
Im having trouble hearing my plugin EFFECTS on my actual tracks. I can hear plugin effects if im recording or before i record but after I've recorded a take i cant hear any effect on my voice. PLEASE HELP
Hi there. Bear in mind your Aux FX sends can’t be recorded. If you want to print your FX with your audio you need to set them as Monitor Inserts and press ‘Mon Rec’, or the blue button on each channel strip so it turns Red - that arms the inserts to be recorded.
Hey Ed. Do you think an additional Monitor Controller is necessary when owning an Apollo (x8)? I dont have a comparison to other HP-Amps and run two sets of Monitors on the X8.
No. You can use the Alt option to toggle between two speakers. And you have up to four HP Cue mixes to play with (two will need to be routed out of the line-outs)

Hi Paul-Aaron. Take the main fader down on the Virtual channel you’ve created for the click and put the faders up for the Cue mixes in the little square Cue mix window on the channel strip.
Imho this video movs a little too fast. And what do you do when you only have one monitor? The UA interface has to be constantly moved around when you need to get the Logic interface.
Help please! I recently got an Apollo Twin X, I'm overdubbing some guitars on a logic session and everything I record, with or without unison plugs is printed about half a second late, I manually have to drag regions to the position I played the notes in the instrument. Why is that? I'll try disabling software monitoring but I don't think that's the issue! Any help would be appreciated. Thank you
Disable software/input monitoring in your DAW and monitor through Console, as explained in this video. Then track your overdubbed guitars through one of the Unison amp sims. The Chandler is awesome! By monitoring through your Daw you’re probably playing with the delayed/latent signal, which is why the recorded audio is delayed upon playback. The Apollo DSP compensates for any latency so your recorded performances through console are not subject to latency. I hope that makes sense 🙂

When setting up a cue mix "the easy way" you set the input level in the mix using the analog input fader, and set the playback level how? Nobody adresses this simple operation. The monitor fade knob doesn't affect the playback level in the headphone mix. The only way I can adjust it seems to be at the DAW output fader.

You need to send each channel you want to hear in your HP to the CUE mix for that headphone send. On your vocal channel, for example, click in the box above the fader (and below the monitor inserts) and adjust the send level to your CUE mix.
How can I route the windows main out ( not the DAW) to my virtual outputs 3/4 in the console when I am on the USB Version of the Apollo that doesn't feature the I/O Matrix?

When I turn on „Low Latency Monitoring“ in Pro Tools to monitor with Console, all the PlugIns in PT Switch to Bypass. Its no Big Deal just for Tracking. But I want to know why. Thanks for watching, I’m glad it’s helpful. The Apollo is designed to be monitored through itself directly. For vocals there’s plenty of UAD plugins to monitor through with zero latency in Console, of which you can print to your audio as your record. For guitars there are loads of great amp sims too. The Chandler is a favourite of mine. For best Apollo/Console results turn off any input/software monitoring in your DAW and monitor solely through Console.
Hey Ed, when I go to change the output in Logic Pro, it doesn't show me the virtual channels I created. I'm working off of an Apollo Twin X with a Behringer ADA8000 running ADAT. Is it even possible to make cue mixes with this setup?
Hi Shade, you will be able to set up one Cue Mix with a Twin X, the ADAT inputs won’t affect that. Double check you’ve got Virtual channels available in Settings where it says DSP Pairs - Virtual Channels, and that you’ve set up the VCs assigned in the outputs section in I/O Matrix. I suspect it’s the DSP Pairs/VC tab that is set to the left (2 DSP Pairs, 0 VCs). Hopefully this will make sense with Console in front of you.
Good stuff! Will this method allow for Aux effects be recorded in Daw? Whenever I want to record the wet signal to my DAW (Ableton), I am able to get all the insert effects but not my Aux effects printed. Thanks!
Great question. As far as I know, you can’t record your Aux FX in Console. I will double check this with UA. The best solution would be to set up a bus with the same effects and bounce that to a track with the input set to the reverb buss you use.

Ok, there’s no way to directly record your Aux but what you can do if you have an Apollo Twin AND and a rack unit like the X6 is to send the Aux to a free Cue mix and send that to outputs 3&4 of your Apollo and reroute that back into an input and record that... It’s a lot easier to just record the buss as I explained earlier 🙂
I need help setting up my in ear monitors with my Apollo heritage thru Logic Pro. Plugging in to the headphone Jack has no power at all and is very faint (vs just using headphones which sound great) Any advice as to what I need to do?
Don’t monitor through Logic, that defeats the point of the Apollo/Console ecosystem. Best turn off software AND input monitoring in Logic and follow the steps in this video for zero latency monitoring in Console. This video demonstrates two ways of monitoring through Console.

While I was recording the vocals, I had set up a unison 1073 preamp and while the gain didn’t seem to high, the monitor volume on the side wasclipping ? Why is this ?
Thanks, Matthew. The monitor level is what’s coming from your DAW. Make sure Software monitoring isn’t on because that will doubling the monitor signal (and also probably causing latency).
How can you get the audio from the sends to come through the headphone mix without having the mic in the main monitor mix? It is annoying to have to mute the microphone channel in the main mix every time I unmute the main monitors in order for the mic to not feedback through the speakers when I'm recording vocals at my desk.
How do I connect a headphone with a 3.5mm jack into the Apollo interface since it uses a different plug Any suggestions Also if I need to use a specific pair of headphones that comes stock with the plug needed by the Apollo that’s not too expensive like $100 also please let me know

@@EdThorne i had an additional query. Apologies if this finds u in a bad time. For some reason my logic’s pan is not working through the UAD virtual 1/2 output. If i turn off the console/Apollo twin the macbook speakers work just fine. The cue output is on the HP, not mix or mono. I am puzzled as it worked fine before. Any advice is highly appreciated 🙏🏼
Make sure you’re recording the monitor inserts by pressing the REC button (far right of Console) or the blue light on the channel strip until it goes red. That arms the track for record insert mode.
One thing I don't think you covered that I'm having a hard time figuring out at the moment: I've got an x16 and Twin mk2 linked. I've got the Twin outputs 3/4 sending to a separate headphone amp (at 0db - what I want). Then I've got the Twin MONITOR OUTs sending to a sub, but for some reason I can't for the life of me get any signal. I've verified 100% that the Twin MONITOR OUTs simply don't emit a signal. I hear the signal just fine through my speakers (fed from the x16 monitor outputs). What am I missing? Thanks!

@@EdThorne what is the difference between monitoring headphone directly on the apollo, or with console ? I thinks for groups cue is great but for exemple 1 vocalists, what is the best way ?
Whoa!. I always just basically plug and play my Apollo x6. I record my own stuff, so I never have to send headphone mixes or such to anyone else. What’s the importance of doing all this and how does it effect my recording? Thank you!!
