How To Setup A Containment Isolation Barrier With Self Closing Zipper

If you’ve ever had a quality contractor or mold remediation professional work within your property, you’ve likely seen some version of a plastic containment/ separation barrier installed to limit the spread of construction debris or mold spores.
In this video, I’ll show you how to properly install an isolation barrier within a doorway or pass-through opening. In addition, I’ll be installing a self-closing magnetic zipper within the doorway - which will allow for hands free entry and exit. This can be a very helpful way to separate areas within dental offices, medical facilities, commercial buildings and even residential homes.
Needed Supplies: Razor knife, painters tape, duct tape, plastic (poly) sheeting, spray glue/ adhesive and the zipper of your choice. The zipper used within this video can be found and purchased at www.reuzip.com.

I recommend cutting the mounting strip first and then attaching the magnetic zipper to avoid accidentally cutting the fabric of it. The newer versions of the mounting strips have a cut guide to make this easier.

Hi Josh-- regarding the bottom of the containment, you lose your seal if you cut it for convenience, am I correct?

Technically, yes. However, you can account for these types of small openings by best managing your air pressure differentials. Also, something as simple as a plastic flap (on the interior of your containment) can assist in limiting the potential for cross-contamination during a power failure - where your machinery may turn off.

Excellent video. Regarding the air filter - if you install one that has an airflow direction indication, which direction would you install it towards? Pointing into the contaminated area to accommodate for the suction of the negative pressure exhaust, or pointing towards the clean space to accommodate for the suction of a central air system?

Hi Joseph! Similarly to installing a filter within your AC system, the filter direction should always point to the direction of airflow. Assuming our containment area is under negative pressure, and we are drawing return air in through a filter, the arrow would point toward the containment.

@@IAQJosh There is no need to set up a filter pointing into containment. If you're under negative pressure then you may as well cut a hole in the plastic. What contaminants are you afraid will enter your contained area?

@@user-bb5ux8xz6r There are a handful of reasons as to why a filter installation would be advantageous. When trying to achieve a high level of clean, why would you want to bring in any added particulate? Furthermore, as more importantly, filters may also act as a fail-safe (depending on the installation approach). If your containment area losses negative pressure and becomes heavily positive, a filter will allow for a “pressure relief”, while at least mitigated some level of fungal spores from spreading. Alternatively, a positive pressure spike may cause your containment barrier to give way in one of the corners - having zero filtration between the work area and surrounding area.

@@IAQJosh If you're placing the filter as a fail safe for positive pressure spikes then the airflow direction on the filter should be installed facing out. :)

What is the brand of tape for that aqua color duct tape? We have tried using duct tape from Home Depot, and it doesn't hold....and it smells terrible from the adhesive. The mold remediators used an aqua blue tape that held for months, but now is falling down. We can't find the aqua blue duct tape. I see you have it, there! Please tell me where to find it. Thank you! (We will get our ceiling and walls fixed sooner or later, but we have to fix the roof, first, and before we do that, we have to get the roofer who damaged the rafters to fix that. Long story, but we are almost a year since the mold remediation was complete and our walls and ceiling are made of plastic sheeting and tape that is not holding anymore.) Thank you!

Mostly great but I would be extremely concerned with adhesive overspray and cutting through the painters tape into the door casing while trimming the plastic back.

Depending on how you bill for services, there’s numerous ways to do so. Time and materials, line item pricing, lump sum, etc. For containment building during remediation services, my remediation team charges a flat rate price, depending on the size of the containment needed.
