G'day Ngaro, Thats wicked mate. Thanks a lot for that feedback, o really appreciate it. Rooftop tent or swag. For me it's a swag every day of the week. I have to admit I made a rookie error on my first set up though mate. I followed your directions to the tee and it was easy. But folding out the legs and tightening them? I was turning the black cushion thingy and it wouldn't tighten. Thought I bought a dud. Wasn't till I was packing it away that I realised it was the actual pole you twist cause I could see the plastic teeth when I looked down the shaft lol. Geez I learn the hard way sometimes... Thankful for your skill and sharing it. I've also decided on a swag. Couldn't justify having that huge weight on the roof of my truck. Plus where to store it when I'm not using it. Thanks again.

@@ngarohape8495 Gday mate, Thats great feedback. Im glad the video did help you out with setting up your awning. Yes, those coloured blocks are only there, to help hold the poles in the tracks when you pack it away. But we all make mistakes mate, thats how you learn and make things easier going forward. Yeah, the roof top tent is a personal choice for many. I much rather the swag for camping for a lot of reasons. Weight on your roof, takes up a lot of space on your roof for other items, pack it up every time you want to go for a drive, big item on the roof if you cant take it on and off each time. Thanks heaps mate for your feed back and replies. Cheers Tim.

G'day Craig, When you get your awning, set it up on the passenger side. That way if you ever need to pull over on a road side or brake down, you can set up your awning for shade. You cant do that if the awning is set up on the drivers side. Thanks mate for your comments and feed back. Some good rain falling all over now, which is fantastic to see. Cheers Batesy.

Tim Bates 4wd Adventures I agree mate - personal choice as to which side but I’ve always had mine on the passenger side. Probably for the same reason too, at least on road or even off road, when you pull over, at least you’re sitting on the passenger side off the road. And I don’t know why but it just looks correct when on the passenger side. Maybe it’s my OCD 😆👍

Hi, what size awning is that in your video? I've just bought a Subaru Crosstrek and was advised to buy a 2m long awning because a 2.5m long awning would be too difficult for me to roll up by myself (solo female traveller). But your video made it look easy enough.
@timbates4wdadventures
@timbates4wdadventures 5 месяцев назад
Gday. My awning is 2.5 x 2.5 mtrs If you follow the steps for setting up and packing up your awning, then you should find it easy, and on your own. Far too many people make the awning setup and pack up way more complicated than it needs to be. The only issue I see with a 2.5 mtr long awning, is it could hang past the windscreen of your Subaru a fair bit. Maybe measure out both size awnings and see which length will suit your car better. My video made it look easy, because it is if you practice those steps and do it that way all the time. Hope that helps. Cheers Tim.

Any reason why you don’t use a 270* awning? I go rid of my side awning as I rarely used it. Now I’ve the 270* I use it all the time.
@timbates4wdadventures
@timbates4wdadventures 4 года назад
G'day Phil, My main reason is purely the weight of the 270* awning, compared to the single length awning. Plus im not keen on the idea that the whole thing has to be set up each time. Don't get me wrong, they are a great idea, as i have mates with them. But for me, i'll stick with the single length awning, works well for me. Thanks for asking mate. Cheers Tim.

G'day Tim,whoever dreamt up these awnings was definitely onto something,much variety in quality though.Do you find water trying to gather and make the whole thing sag in the middle with a good downpour?I tend to leave one pole shorter than the other,to encourage the water to go away. I can't hear any zippers rattle or poles move for the racket my Land Rover makes mate🤣🤣🤣
@timbates4wdadventures
@timbates4wdadventures 4 года назад
G'day Wayne, Quite a few awning options on the market these days. Just have to find one that suits your style of camping. I do the same at night with one of the corner poles. Make one corner lower to alloy any rain water to run off it. If you dont, it will pool up on top for sure and create a lot of weight for the material of the awning. Thanks again for your reply mate. Cheers Tim.

Great video. I'm getting on in years and trying to simplify right down. What do you think of the spring loaded pull out awnings? Am currently driving Subaru Outback. Wife and I camped around Oz in the 1970s in a sedan. She now uses a walker so can't help, but we still want to get outdoors, mostly for day trips but can't cope with the sun. Cheers Lawrie.

G'day Steve, Ive not had any issues with the cover of my awning cracking due to weather exposure. But i do spray my zip with WD-40 every now and then. G'day fellas, I have a question, totally off-topic (anyone may answer); first some info: I have the 1990 SWB LandCruiser (70-series), 5 cyl., manual diesel - gorgeous little truck! - without a snorkel. I hear everyone raving about them, and have thought many times about installing one; but a seemingly odd experience tells me I might not need one; and I was hoping someone could explain...... When I was up north in the Wet of '95, we came to the Fitzroy River in a ripper of a flood, and our vehicle (fully-laden Cruiser, towing an equally fully-laden off-road Jayco) was the last let through by the local constabulary before they closed the bridge. The water was high, but not unsafe ... but as we crossed, the water was rising rapidly, and it came WELL over the bonnet, almost half way up the windows; but, though it certainly felt a bit hairy, we didn't have a problem -- at all. Obviously the sheer weight of the combined vehicle and all the gear therein kept the rubber on the road ... but what about the engine? ... because to this day, the ol' Cruiser is still running like a dream on her original engine. What I know about diesel engineering wouldn't fill the back of a postage-stamp, so I've asked plenty of mechanics over the years, including Toyota's own diesel mechanics, and it's plain they just don't believe the story .... but it happened, so one is naturally quite perplexed! Without a snorkel, how is it even possible? Did we just get a lucky air-pocket? Or doesn't that model actually need one, and if not, how is _that_ possible? Thank you in advance, and Happy Australia Day! PS: Great video (and that's a bonza awning -- I want one!).
@timbates4wdadventures
@timbates4wdadventures 4 года назад
G'day mate, Thats a great story about the river crossing of the Fitzroy River. Only thing i can come up with is, you got very lucky. Maybe the pace you were driving across was enough to hold a good bow wave and some how keep the water out from inside the engine bay. Im no diesel mechanic, but i know that a diesel engine only needs a very to ingest a very small amount of water, before they pretty much self destructed. For me, i would have any 4wd let along a diesel 4wd, that hasn't got a snorkel fitted. Thanks again for your reply mate. It would have been an epic river crossing for sure. Cheers Tim.
