At the top level of pickleball, players can dink forever and mostly can hit any shot they want at anytime.
Of course, they're human so they still make errors but they are few and far between.
In order to win they have to add something to their game that is above and beyond simply dinking back and forth or hitting solid 3rd shot drops.
The best players add an element of surprise to their game. A great surprise shot is the Erne. In this video, we'll show you how to setup and execute the Erne in pickleball.

Another approach is the Hastings defense for a slightly different case. But first, let me say that this is a great video explaining the Erne and I'll start to practice it more now that I see how it works. Excellent explanation. Erne was recently at the Sequim Fling (June 2, 2019) when Doug Hastings, an elite pro, made a different defensive ace shot after the ball dropped into the kitchen and reversed back over the net (so a similar ball proximity in relation to the net as the Erne, but a different situation). Normally, on reversed balls, you just reach over the net and hit the ball (careful not to touch the net). But, what do you do when there is also wind at your back and the ball reversed so fast that you can't reach it from the net (it's reversed out of reach)? You do a "Hastings" that takes the Erne to the next level. The Hastings was ruled legal at the USAPA tournament. The Hastings is explained in this video ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-UjEqulLC3WI.html Thanks again for the great explanation on the setup to the Erne ... I'll start practicing.

does the erne work as well on the right side of the court with a backhand (with a right handed player)?

Jordan you hit the nail on the head when you say it is a surprise shot. The best time to hit the shot is when your opponent is not expecting it therefore has no defense for it. Keep up the great tips and videos.

Hi Jordan, I would like to see a video on a forehand topspin attack volley. It's such an important shot but I can't seem to find any youtube videos on it (There are several backhand ones). I am experimenting with different forehand topspin motions, and I think I have figured out the motion for a waist high ball, but can't figure out the motion for a shoulder height ball (or just below the shoulder). At shoulder height, the ball is still a bit low to smash/hit downwards so I think you need to hit it with topspin. It's easy to do on the backhand, but can't figure out the proper contact point for the forehand. Also, as I'm experimenting, I find myself unconsciously changing my grip to the eastern forehand grip from tennis as it is easier to flick the wrist and hit the ball square on. Do 5.0+ players switch to the eastern forehand grip from continental before they are about to attack the ball on the forehand?

Hey James, thanks so much for the response! We will definitely look into doing swinging volley videos in the near future. Yes, grips for these volleys are very important. On a swinging forehand volley, in terms of the grip, I tend to rotate the paddle a little counterclockwise, so I can get more spin on the ball.

Thanks, this is probably the shot I need now to become an advanced player. Most people at the 3.5 level are bangers. I learned in reverse - 3rd shot drop and dinking first. 5.0+ players can counterattack rather than just block it when someone flicks the ball at them.

Jordan, I have always been in the impression. That it is a fault, to step into the NVZ, before contact? Could you please address this. Hey, it would be a lot easier, on the footwork, just to only worry about the ball and timing.

As long as you establish both feet outside the NVZ before contact, the ERNE will be legal

Jordan, I understand your reply to Eric, however, if you hit a shot and your follow through takes you into the kitchen you loose the point. So I really wonder how you would differentiate hitting the setup shot and then stepping through the kitchen intentionally to hit the erne? Yes, you would hit outside the zone, but only after you stepped into it. Yes, you could step into the NVZ after they hit, but then the timing would be very short. Like the concept, like your videos, but this is one for the refs to weigh in on...

Notice he is stepping OVER the kitchen. The No Volley Zone is only on the ground where marked. It does not go up or out of bounds.

He stepped in the kitchen to do the Ernie at 4:09. Is that a violation?

@@lbeau061 I know this was a year ago...but no, no violation because both his feet were on the ground outside the kitchen Before he hit the ball...no violation.

At the approx. 4:05 video mark, you stepped into the kitchen to execute the Erne; was that legal?

Ok, Karen. Just curious, how much did you pay to watch this video? Make your own video if you can do better. The guy is giving out helpful tips for free. Some people like to whine about everything.
