Hi, your tutorials are excellent. I’m getting to grips with time machine but it doesn’t seem to be backing up an additional external hard drive that I have photos on. It’s in the inclusion list on the tm options. I’m pretty sure it’s not backed up because tm data used is less than that on the other hard drive. Any suggestions please.
On Catalina? Just format the ext disk as Apple journaled, then let Time Machine do the rest. I tried doing it the way in the video and it refused to start backup.
Why is my macbook time machine "unable to create local snapshot to back up from" I have been googling, and there seems to not be a solution. It used to work prior to updating to catalina, but now it "could not create a local snapshot to back up from"
Oh hey, I think I'm on to it! If like me, your Mac was already almost full when you finally tried to set up Time Machine, maybe this will help. Another video suggested that you need to have enough room on your local machine to create the initial snapshot during your first Time Machine backup. First I followed the Tech & Design advice here in the above video, and I created 2 partitions: timemachine and mac. Although Time Machine wouldn't back up initially because of the local snapshot issue, I was able to manually drag and drop some of my biggest files (several GBs) into the mac partition of my new external drive. I then deleted those files from my internal hard drive and tried Time Machine again. After preparing for several minutes, it is now backup up! The time estimate jumped from 3-5 hours in the first few minutes, but after tunneling down this rabbit hole for several weeks already, that's a short wait by comparison. 😅 Wish me luck; looks like things are finally starting to cooperate. 🤞Hope this helps you guys, too!
Why do I have to delete my external to back up my Mac ? I already have important things on my external. So are you suggesting I buy a new one to do this?
this is a set up video. Usually people set up when something is brand new out of the box. I have no idea how you set up your external hard drive when you first got it. but if you didn’t do what I showed , you most likely will run into problems later on
Hello. I keep getting a failed to backup time machine. :( It says this "Time Machine could not create a local snapshot to back up from." Any videos on this error? I have no space on my computer so it's about to crash and my phone icloud is also full. I bough an HD and partitioned it as directed above which worked great and I was able to setup time machine perfectly. However one day my computer had the error message of unable to backup time machine. Ugh, So i redid the directions of this video which worked perfectly, but when it came to setting up time machine it now only gives me the error and the message. "Time Machine could not create a local snapshot to back up from."..
