My plan is to add pockets similar to this to my friends tee shirts that already have pockets. The present pockets are not deep enough to carry his cordless phone. @ianjoseph
@ianjoseph 4 года назад
Hi, many, many thanks for the tutorials which I have found invaluable in getting started. One small suggestion. When making a sew on pocket I’ve found it gives a better finish by not cutting all the way down before inverting the top of the pocket. The inside piece should be cut all the way, but what becomes the outside piece does not need to be cut at all, or only halfway.
@TockCustom
@TockCustom 4 года назад
Are you talking about clipping out the corners? or something else?
@ianjoseph
@ianjoseph 4 года назад
Yes, where you clip out the corners, not clipping the whole way allows a piece of fabric to extend up and so the actual small spot where the cut ends is not visible. Try not cutting the whole way .
@ianjoseph
@ianjoseph 4 года назад
Tock Custom look at Teach Yorself to Sew: Patch Pockets by Threads Sewing. Their clipping of the corners illustrates what I am talking about. But..l your tutorial is much better.

I know, I know. On the pattern piece is the exact placement for the pocket. After you cut out your pocket, I clip (tiny) one each side on the fold line for your pocket facing. You can either turn down a small amount to fabric to edge the top of the pocket. Then I usually baste (longer stitches) around the pocket on the seam line. Fold down the pocket facing and press. Then fold in the seams and press them to the actual size of the pocket using the basting stitches as your guide. Locate the position of the pocket on the right side (facing you) of the shirt. pin pocket in place. I start at the bottom of the pocket facing sewing to the top of the pocket about a 1/4 of an inch from the edge of the pocket, sew to where you are going to top stitch the pocket. when you start top stitching the pocket you are forming a long triangle at the top of the pocket, continue all the way around the pocket till you get to the other side top. Make a triangle again on the top corner as you did on the left side. pocket finished

How do you make your machine go slow? Are you using a foot peddal?
@TockCustom
@TockCustom 4 года назад
With most machine, if you press lightly on the foot pedal, it will go slower. Also, you can turn the wheel by hand to go super slow. Some machines even have a feature that lets you throttle the maximum speed of the stitches too, so you have a few options depending on your equipment. Hope this helps! Have an excellent week!

@Joe-ho6fo
@Joe-ho6fo 3 года назад
Do you shorten the stitch length as you come to the pivot point?
@TockCustom
@TockCustom 3 года назад
Nope, there's a little trick you can do where you can stop stitching before the pivot, raise the needle, raise the presser foot, reposition the fabric so the needle goes in the perfect spot on the corner, then slowly lower your needle to make sure you have the right spot, lower your presser foot, and then sink your needle into the fabric. Then just do your pivot and continue on! This also works if you about to sew past your pivot point. Great question :)

@TockCustom
@TockCustom 4 года назад
When you do it this way, it takes a ton of the bulk out of the top corners. You can do it by doing a rolled hem (like back pockets to jeans), but again, you end up with a ton of extra bulky fabric. Also every dress shirt pattern I've seen does their breast pockets this way :) Hope this helps!

how would you go about adding a pocket to an existing t-shirt?
@TockCustom
@TockCustom 4 года назад
I'd make a round bottom pocket like this one with knit fabric, mark where you want the pocket to be with chalk, then open up the left side seam of the t-shirt - pin the pocket into place, sew it onto your shirt, and then sew the side seam all the way back together from the bottom to the tip of the sleeve. Then probably overlock that seam to make it look clean on the inside. Hope the all makes sense :)

How do we know where the pocket goes on the left front panel ?

There is a mark on the pattern that tells you where it goes. I just mark the top with chalk, line it up, pin it in place, and sew it :)

Can you tell me what the Diameters of that pocket template please.

It was just the traditional panel in the shirt pattern I got. Probably about 4.5x6 inches or so. You can certainly just measure a shirt pocket you have an add a seam allowance too.
