I still use these things in the way they were designed and made, but have SO many that are damaged or falling apart. This is a great idea to put those back in service. I was so pleased to find a video that is honoring the maker and upcycling in a creative and useful way. Thank you! One last thought...these are truly art pieces and you could actually frame them. They would be like doilie collages. Beautiful :)
This is absolutely beautiful and a wonderful tribute to days gone by. I've only just found your channel and can't wait to watch more. Lovely to hear an Aussie here. I'm in NSW 🌷
Thank you for your kind words, they are very encouraging. I have been an Aussie since 1988! In Perth. I think this is a good way to keep those precious pieces, otherwise they may get thrown away. Nice to hand down in something useful. Kind Regards, Elizabeth
I made a wedding quilt for my sister in a very similar manner. Unfortunately I did not have many family owned doilies but went to the flea market and got a ton of material. Lovely work and great tutorial.
Gorgeous cushion, thank you for creating the video. If you do any natural dying, the off cuts that are stained can be added to a dye bath of something like tea, avocado skins/pits or onion skins, with a variety of other fabrics and laces, and used for another project made up of a number of different pieces from the dye bath.
Just came across your channel - it was a great video!! Thanks for creating it & sharing it! Your work is beautiful, the workmanship is stunning!! I hope the recipients appreciate them & understand the time & effort that went into each piece - they are very artistic!!
Thank you for your kind words, I often wonder how the ladies who crocheted them managed, with much less sewing equipment than we have now, to produce such beautiful pieces. Elizabeth
Very nice! I have a little stash of old handwork from grandmothers and my dear mother-in-law. This gives me a good idea of how I can use some of them so they can be enjoyed rather than being stuck away in a drawer. Thank you! Subscribed.
This was my intention, we have a large family and only a limited amount of pieces, so I put a piece in each block and then all the girls can have a part of Grandmother, or Aunts, to pass on in something useful.
Hi Bonnie, I think there is something special about preserving antique lace and doilies. Do send pictures for me to see when you have made something, I'm sure you will have fun! Happy sewing!
Hi Diane, Thanks for your message, and here are the 3 links for the Handy Hints you requested for the Doily video. Handy Hint 01 ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-iND2FyCdITg.html Handy Hint 02 ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-XO326o5BqDM.html Handy Hint 03 ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-4Ss7d-bZuzU.html ......I have tried then and they work, however if you have a problem you can just copy the link manually into your browser and it will work. Elizabeth.
Hi Janet, Thanks for your comment. I have listened to the complete video again and I found that the sound had to be turned up just a little. My husband also listened to the video with the sound turned up and he could fully understand what I was saying. If you look at the other comments you will see no one has mentioned that the sound was not very good. Perhaps you could increase the sound if you watch it again and see if it is any better. Kind regards, Elizabeth
What a great idea. A couple of weeks ago I saw something on Dollies. I love your ideas, especially the bed runner. I have two crates full of antique table cloths and linens. I can’t wait to use them. And to see what your next video shows. Thank you
I would love to see some of your work with them. I am going to do something a little different with the doilies in the next couple of weeks, hope you will enjoy that!
Thank you, this was a work of love for me. I wonder how they ever made such beautiful pieces with limitations compared to what we have today. Kind Regards, Elizabeth
Hi Cindy, Thanks for your question. Go on to my RU-vid channel and in the Search Bar type in Sew Smart with Elizabeth Handy Hint 01, this will bring up the first handy hint and the other two are HH02 and HH03. Just type these in after my name and they will come up automatically. Hope this helps you out, Kind regards, Elizabeth.
Hi Kristin, I did the hand stitching in addition to the machine work, as sometimes the edges of the crochet, if they are very old, can be worn a little. when you machine over them they can gather up. so on a few of them I just hand sew to secure and preserve them. Regards, Elizabeth
This may seem like a dum question, but what is the difference between overlock and serging? I am glad I found you, these are beautiful and love the detail of attaching. Love them. TFS
Thank you for your inquiry. Serge is an American terminology and over-locking is used in most other countries. They mean the same thing. Serge/over-lock machines often cut the seam edge, which is useful, but, over-locking can be done on your domestic machine. There is an over-locking foot you can buy for this. I use the domestic machine, as I find it quite sufficient. Hope this helps you, Happy sewing! Elizabeth
Thank you for treating hand made doilies and linens with such respect. I have a huge assortment of lovely pieces and you have shown me a wonderful way to repurpose them to share with family and friends.
Thank you for your kind comments, I just love to preserve these pieces. So much skill and care was taken when they were originally made. They are wonderful to hand down to the next generation. Kind regards, Elizabeth
No, all are just washed and pressed carefully before I used them. I like the beige/ecru shades. I do use coloured, embroidered doilies, but not as often as the cream shades. Elizabeth
Thank you for such kind comments, and for subscribing to my channel. The bed runner fits my King size bed and measures 2.8 metres long, and 50 cm wide. Would love to see it when you have made it! I have another doily project coming out shortly. Happy sewing!
Absolutely Beautiful, I love vintage dollies, hankies and linens and have collected many over the years. I have been searching for a ways to incorporate them into my home and possibly make gifts for family and friends. Thank You for sharing your gift with me.
Beautiful! Thank you so much for sharing. I’ve seen a quilt from doilies. I’ve had some ones I was gifted and some I’ve found and collected from resale shops.
I measured the width of my bed and added 36" on - you can make it as deep as you choose. I just worked with the amount of doilies I had at the time. Sorry I didn't pick up your question before, it slipped past me! Kind regards, Elizabeth
Thank you! I come from a large family, and thought it would be nice for each of us to have a little piece of our grandmother's work. Much more likely I think to be handed down, than a set of doilies that one person has. It's really good fun to see what you can make with them.
@Donald p. Richard Hi, my parents came to Canada from the Netherlands. I was born in Canada. I have been to Italy. (Venice, Rome, Florence, Pisa) Beautiful country.
@Donald p. Richard I never counted them, but I think I have been to at least 25 states in the U.S. I have been to the Netherlands 6 times. Most of my relatives lived there.
