Sewing two lace pieces together in a look that is "seamless" for a clean, couture finish without the bulk of a regular seam. This example used is a sheer lace back of a custom bridal gown.

So helpful! I'm doing the same thing, making a lace overlay on a wedding dress bodice. Ran short of lace, have to stitch two pieces together to cover the bodice front. I made a thick ugly seam at first, but now that I've seen a better way to do it, that's what I'll do next. Thanks so much!!

This is very helpful thanks! My daughter has asked to use my wedding dress (which I have completely cut and revamped), but I am short some pieces for the sleeves. Im using this technique and it’s working a treat 👍

What presser foot are you using? What size needle are you using? What is the tension, width, and length settings on the sewing machine you’re using?

Regular everything! Foot, needle (12/90), normal tension (my machine doesn’t have number just a dial to adjust). My regular stitch is 2.5 I go to 2 for this. Machines are so different, test first!

Could you tell me the name and/or source of the lace you are working with? It looks very much like a lace I found online called "Delmira", but the Delmira is sequined...I would like to find the lace you are using which does NOT have sequins! Thanks in advance. Thanks also for this very well done tutorial. I will be making my daughter's wedding dress for a summer 2020 wedding!! I've sewn for years but never attempted a wedding dress with lace overlay and lace applique, so this is quite the learning experience!!

@@ThreadoraGowns Thank you for your response. I found the notation about Fabricana in a post further down the page after I sent you this message...sorry to be redundant!! I live in New Mexico and there just are NOT any bridal fabric stores here. The closest is Denver, CO, so I'm going to try to send a picture of the sample I obtained from a company in the UK to them and see where that leads. Again...thank you so much for this tutorial, it will be VERY HELPFUL when I begin work on my daughter's dress!!

Juliana Ewusi-Essel hi! Thank you! The easiest way to do princess seams is to turn them into a dart by joining the tops of your pattern pieces. I show this in my pattern course Prima Ballerina on Threadora.com. You also might see some of it in my raspberry tutu prom dress video but it’s just a showcase.

Lovely but why not to use a darting foot for free style stitching which allows making a foot as you go rather than stop and lift all the time ...hope the dress turned out well.
@ThreadoraGowns
@ThreadoraGowns 5 лет назад
Do you mean darning foot? I should see if there's a foot available for my industrial. I don't mind stopping all the time, the knee lift makes it pretty effortless. I also try not to use so many "advanced" or optional accessories, just basics for everyone to follow.

@Jayadhara1
@Jayadhara1 7 лет назад
Hi Elise, Sorry to be stupid, but I cannot figure out how the black seam lines are accurately sewn if you are sewing around the lace motif. I keep watching it, but don't know how you make it fit correctly by doing this? Thank you for your reply.
@ThreadoraGowns
@ThreadoraGowns 7 лет назад
judy holman the basting marks your seam line and all you do is match those up between your two pieces. It depends on the motif but sew the new seam as close to your basted line as you can. Trim away excess at the overlap edges. You can pin and baste around the lapped seam and test until you're satisfied with how it looks.
@Jayadhara1

Hi Elise, do you have a video or any instruction on line of how to sew sequin & beaded lace overlay onto a low"ish" V neck bodice that has a princess seam for the bust? Waistband on the dress fyi. Would you seam the lace at the centre front line- or not? Or would you have the front bodice all in one piece (ie centre front cut on fold) and shape/seam/piece the lace around the princess seams (so the seam doesn't show, as you taught in a separate video)? Wondering what you might think best pls. Thanks in advance! Love your videos btw. They are excellent.

With such a large piece of lace why did you need to cut two instead one?
@ThreadoraGowns
@ThreadoraGowns 4 года назад
Dorian jon do you mean cutting on a single layer? Instead of doubling up the fabric? I just find it more accurate in this case to see the motif right side up and plan the opposite garment side so it matches well.
