How to Sharpen a Serrated Knife - Can you Sharpen Serrated Knives?

To sharpen serrated knives you will need a diamond or ceramic rod and as an option you can hone with leather or denim. You can also touch up serrations with a powered belt sharpener.
When sharpening use a diamond rod. Rest the curve of the serration on the diamond rod on the beveled side at about a 20 degree angle, usually you can feel where the knife wants to rest and a tapered rod is great when sharpening various sized serrations on the same knife. Move the knife up and down the diamond to remove some material and raise a burr to expose the cutting edge. Usually 5-10 short strokes will raise a burr on diamond. Do this for each serration.
Then use the leather or denim to hone and remove the burr. Lay the knife down on the opposite side you sharpened, flat. Raise the spine of the knife very slightly, about the width of 3 or four stacked playing cards. Lightly draw the knife backwards across the material to push the created burr back over to the beveled side. Repeat this process tow or three times to remove the burr and leave a sharp edge.
To touch up a serrated knife on a powered sharpener you will want to use a sharpener that uses a belt system. Because serrations are single bevel, you will only want to address the "flat" side of the knife, similar to the honing process outlined above. Rest the knife on the downward side of the belt flat, raise the spine off the belt the width of two or three playing cards, then power on the sharpener at low speed. Move the knife across the serrations back a forth two or three times to ensure you sharpen each apex.

Good stuff. I do them on your blade grinding attachment as well with it set to 10 degrees after putting up a burr from the gullets as you described. Thanks man!

Thanks, bud! Great video. I have a number of knives (kitchen and outdoors/adventures) that have serrations. This is perfect. I don’t have a leather strop, but the rough denim totally makes sense - I have some retired “construction” jeans that should do nicely. Cheers mate!

I'm really pleased with this! It works like a charm ru-vid.comUgkxDcr-y2Pf6xdnrFHrSP7dl9kpKaCozcSQ Takes less time than my old electric sharpener because it can take more off the knife faster, and then it smooths out nicely with the finer grit polisher. I don't know how long it will last before the grit wears away, but I wouldn't mind having to replace it every once in a while.

I do enjoy serrations a lot I mostly sharpen them on a fine ceramic rod gets them razor sharp
@larryseibold4287
@larryseibold4287 3 года назад
if all of the serrations are the same, like on that bread knife, is it appropriate to slide the sharpener along the blade slowly, where the conical sharpener goes up/down along one serration after another horizontally vs back and forth (or just forward)? This sliding technique would seem to be faster and finer, but perhaps less controlled. Thoughts?

Question, why do you only use diamond stone/rod toward the edge instead of both directions? You said not to do it but didn't say why? I ask cause I usually use ny Fallkniven DC3 in a circular motion so I move in both/all directions with the diamond side and ceramic side (on plain edges obviously)

Josh, a quick fix for a dull serrated knife is to use the ceramic rod on the back side of the knife. It will act as a steel and straighten the edge well enough to cut until you have time for a proper sharpening. I like the pivot sharpener, ordered one today.

What are serrations good for? I recently picked up a Benchmade Mini Griptilian for a very good price but the blade is half-serrated. It's my first pocket knife. Feels weird to have serrations going halfway?

Would the tools that sharpen a chainsaw blade work?
@MartianOfError
@MartianOfError Год назад
Yes, I do it to a serrated Wusthof (confectioners) silverpoint. It's not an expensive knife and one well used. Chainsaw files are super aggressive, so use it lightly and check for a burr like in the video. It goes without saying if your knife is important, much loved or expensive just don't do it. And I don't do it often.

@airwilliam24
@airwilliam24 2 года назад
Same concept but it takes a lot longer. I use a diamond file that fits the shape of the scallop. File each scallop and deburr using strop. You can use a Dremel it needs some serious retoothing. Honestly, I really hate sharpening serrated knives, they just take a lot longer than a plain edge. A coarse, toothy edge on a plain edge works almost as well as a serrated anyways and it takes seconds to sharpen.

EYE PROTECTION! Where do you think those little raised burrs go? Right into the eyeball as you peak over the top. You only get two eyes. If you can't do that, just take your knives into a local shop and have them professionally done. Like all the real chefs do.
