Finally, I find a video of someone who goes way overboard on sharpening their tools like I do. I’ve been just feeling my way along on my own coming up with ways to sharpen these strange new tools I’ve decided I wanted to learn to use. I generally shy away from trying to learn many things from RU-vid videos unless I’m familiar with the source. Trust and believe, there’s plenty of bad information on the youtubes. I’ve been using a similar method with meh results but I think using a properly sized rod will make all the difference. Apparently the cheap entry level tools I first purchased aren’t known for being too useful for too long, but being the hard headed type that I am, I’ll try switching from the less perfectly matched edge I’ve been using to support the abrasive paper to a proper size rod and see if I can get some use out of my cheap edgers even tho I have already placed an order for some tools of a little better quality. Thanks so much for this video.

Very helpful video since I am new to leather work and have trouble with edging tools not being or staying sharp. Thanks!

Exactly the reason I looked for this and out of the few I watched this is the best.

If you don't have a rod, use an appropriate size drill bit

A) It friends on the design of the edger. Everyone assumes all edgers are designed like the one they have. B) The Roots size should be chosen so that it fits the groove WITH THE SANDPAPER WRAPPED AROUND IT. If it fits the groove, without the sandpaper, then it is too big, and you will enlarge your groove.

Very informative. I do not have a hobby shop or craft store near me and I hate paying for a tool plus shipping. So I make many of my tools. A bevel is my next. Thanks to your video I have confidence I can do it and have a quality tool.

Once again, I learn more details on leatherwork from this informative video about the sequence of sharpening the edge beveller. Thank you for demonstrating the complete method and noting the various grits used in the process of sharpening, then finally how to strop the tool. I did not know how the beveller is correctly sharpened and stropped.

have had my smallest edge beveler since '69 when I started my brief career as a hippy-dippy leatherman to help work my way thru 2 yrs of college....luckily, crude leatherwork sold easily back then.... ;o) ....have never sharpened it and it still cuts a clean bevel....over the years, have picked up a couple more, larger edgers that do need sharpening....thanks for your video!!.....have progressed quite a bit over the years as a hobby....right now, it's time to make small saddlebags for my harley sporty 48....still have a couple sides of heavier black latigo and will probably need one of my larger edgers, which will be sharp thanks to you.... [thumbs up]

Thanks for the informative video. I received a dull beveler in a cheap kit and had no idea on how to sharpen it. I will give this a try to get some life from it, you have a new subscriber

This was very helpful, I have several thickness of rods down to .3 mm. This showed me a better way. Thank you. Leather cutting tools are the second reason I will take a cutting tool to a polished edge, wood carving is the other. All my leather cutting tools have extremely sharp edges. I make knives and the sheaths that go with them. I found I like leather work as much as knifemaking. Try stropping with diamond compound, very aggressive.

Thanks for the vid, I didn’t realize how high sandpaper grit goes! Do you ever have problems with the edges rolling on the opposite side which you are sanding?

Thanks for a very clear and informative video. There are few videos out there about sharpening edgers, and none of them as helpful as yours. I have been using Seiwa edgers which come with a rod and 2000 grit paper but until now I had not quite get the technique. Sadly the Kyoshin Elle Master edger you show doesn't appear to be available to buy on any English language website yet. Have you tested the Vergez Blanchard edgers? I would be very interested to know your view of them as they may be the most easily obtained 'high quality' edgers for UK buyers. Thanks again!

Thank you so much for kind words. I am very glad that my videos are helpful. Yes, Master edgers will be soon available around the sellers too. I have not tested VB edgers yet. they are for saddlers I think? it's not suitable for delicate work that I am doing. I might get one and try to modify them. if you are in UK, try to find "Pfeil" edgers. they are swiss made but not so expensive.

This does a terrific job of getting the edger sharp, but I'm getting an unintended consequence. When I drag the edger along the rod (which is laid on a table, over the sandpaper, as you are doing, the prongs on either side of the edge are also getting sharpened, and then, when I use the tool, these prongs dig in. I've started just wrapping the sandpaper around the rod and holding it in my hand so it doesn't contact the prongs, but this method is less precise. I prefer the accuracy of your method. Am I doing something wrong? Thanks.

I didn't know about the rod and sandpaper technique. I have an edge beverler that I got from Tandy, so it's mediocre at best. I have used the stropping technique that you show with black (coarser) and green compounds and it made a noticeable difference in its performance. I strop before every use, just like with a knife or other edged tool. Here in the USA many hardware stores sell small diameter brass rods so I should be able to find something suitable. You could get much more life out of your sandpaper if you put a couple of drops of oil on the paper (to float the swarf) and just made multiple passes over the same spot on the sandpaper. Premium quality sandpaper wears very well, and the cheap no-name brands wear out very quickly. It's worth it to pay extra for the premium quality papers like you are using.

Thank you so much for the tips and kind words. I am glad you got the idea of sharpening edgers. I envy USA craft stores because you guys have so much access to raw materials than in Asia. I would love to visit Home Depot one day. I would be like a kid in the candy store!

Hi, is the Master series supposed to be the inferior line to the pro line of edge bevelers by Kyoshin Elle? Thanks for sharing and your input.

I don't think so, Master Series has better steel.

Selim Efe try any fountain pen stores. Fountain pen user use it to smooth the tip of the pen. Try goulet pen if you are from the state.
