Today I save an old Planer / Jointer from being shoved into the back corner of a workshop by sharpening up the straight blades and realigning them. I use my Tool and Cutter Grinder to get them consistent across the full length.
Thanks Ian, It takes a fair bit of work by they time they are edited and uploaded. They are getting better gradually. I passed 500 subscribers the other day so things are progressing gradually.
Hi DK, I can’t recall off the top of my head. I’ll have a look tomorrow if the label is still visible or if I still have the invoice from when I purchased the wheel. I think it’s a fairly general purpose middle of the road grit :) Funny, from the YT Analytics most viewers give this video the flick in the first 30 seconds once they see the style of my grinder. The blades come out insanely flat and sharp. I bought this machine on eBay for about $800 bucks so it was a bargain. I have some new HSS blanks to make a spare set of blades for the same planner. Glad you got something out of it. Flick me a subscribe if you want to say a big thanks, it’s a long way to 1000 🤠 Dave
@@DK-vx1zc I just checked out the grinding wheels. Both my cup and flat wheel that featured in the video have the same number on the label. 38A60-JVBE I Googled that and I see information about it being made of White Aluminium Oxide suitable for grinding tool steel. All the ones listed were 60 grit. I know you can't grind carbide with these wheels. Those wheels are usually green. I hope this information helps.
That’s a very good question. Perhaps if you had a jig to assist keeping them steady you could do it. On the other hand if you used a wet stone by hand like mine you could keep them sharp sharp If they didn’t get too blunt. Not much use if you take a chunk out though.
