Thank you, I like to watching several videos and with your video I got the valve compound and wrench. The previous video he used his drill.

Yep you can use a drill as well, it can be faster. I wanted to show a method using as few tools as possible if someone doesn't have a drill handy. Thanks for watching and commenting!

Thanks! You mention a previous video that showed removing the wheel, etc. Can you link that? I've had a 3oz tube of Permatex Valve Grinding Compound for maybe 10 years, just not gotten around to researching how to utilize it to sharpen my Craftsman push mower, which I've had for maybe 20 years. I've messed with sharpening the blades with small sharpening stones, haven't adjusted the blades against the cutting blade. The mower works, kind of, but is a lot of work! It's time to do the job right!

Can't believe I found a video on using Valve compound to do the job instead of backlapping compound. Terrific! Thanks so much!

that is a great idea about the drill. I just got 3 bits that will adapt the 1/4" impact gun to fit a 1/4", 3/8" and 1/2" socket. can't wait to go get some of that permatex tomorrow. Thank you

So I’ve had one of these push mowers for a couple years because I like to be as green as I CAN... punn intended!! Lately I found myself having to go back over it back over it back over at several directions every other day!! I didn’t wanna do one blade (like I saw one fool doing!) at a time and I see most of the videos that are out there are more than five years old but I haven’t seen one yet that states that you should wash the stuff back off your lawnmower “cause it’s not good for Mother Nature” I want to try your technique but with my variable (so at a slow speed but faster than I can crank it by hand!) speed two transmission drill and a deep 9/16!!! So off to Amazon for some compound! I am.... 💋🥰🪓🐞

This worked quite well for me! Glad you found the video useful! Make sure to take a piece of paper between the reel and bedknife and see if it cuts paper afterwards. You might have to adjust the clearance screws for the reel-to-bedknife so it’s cutting smoothly all the way across the cutting surface. Thanks for watching and commenting, good luck!

And as I was getting ready to turn it up I noticed one of the bolts was loose on the wheel somebody came to the door and I lost the keeper key!! For that side. Ug
@DIYDad1
@DIYDad1 4 года назад
Tedi Bare oh no! You might be able to find a replacement part. This is the company that makes several different brand reel mowers of similar design. I’d check their website try to find the make and model of the mower you have and check the spare parts list. You might need to order the entire wheel kit I’m not certain of that. Then once you find the part number search for it on amazon and see if you can find it for cheaper. I’d start here at this website. americanlawnmower.com/collections/replacement-parts

Don't you need to adjust the screws though after backlapping?
@DIYDad1
@DIYDad1 3 года назад
Ah yes you are right sorry if i forgot to mention that. Yes, sometimes you do have to make some minor adjustments after backlapping. What I do is adjust it so its a bit tight to begin with the backlapping loosens it up again a bit as it removes a small amount of metal in the process. Check for proper clearance with the paper cutting and if you need to make a few minor adjustments then go ahead. But sometimes its good to go right away.
@edpo6397
@edpo6397 3 года назад
Its trial and error with mine you turn the screws closest to the blade counter clockwise just a hair

Michael Beckett in the garage. I just used it this weekend. I’m using the reel so I can mow super short, it’s healthier for the grass if you go below about 2 inches.

how bout a drill for 8 minutes?
@DIYDad1
@DIYDad1 3 года назад
Yep that will absolutely work as well, sometimes I like to show methods using as few tools as possible as not everyone may own a drill, as hard as that is to believe 😆 but I’ve used a drill before to backlap and it saves a lot of time.

@@DIYDad1 A video said you need a 1/2" drill. I think mine's only 3/8". I think I can probably borrow a 1/2" from my town's tool lending library.

@@musicantd you can probably use a 3/8th drill, a half would be overkill for this it doesn't take a ton of power!

This is totally redundant. A reel mower is self sharpening. All you have to do is keep the blades clean and dry for storage, so the cutting edges don't rust. During off season oil the blades to prevent corrosion. I have never sharpened the blades of my mower; it still cuts strips of paper like the day I bought it.
