I'm sorry but tin foil and sand paper just don't cut it. (pardon the pun;)
If you want sharp scissors you need to actually remove the blunt edge and for my money a sharpening stone is the way to go.
I hope after watching this video you will feel confident to give this a try. I feel really great about maintaining my own tools!
Wet stones are readily available at retailers like hardware stores and specialty kitchen stores. Amazon has them as well.
However, I'm not going to leave any links because I've only used second hand ones and so it makes it difficult to recommend a brand when I don't actually know what mine is. And I simply can't recommend things I haven't used.

Hi Stephanie, I am an Old knife maker/Jeweler and am going to teach my barber Young lady to sharpen shears with an angle holding device and small electric powered polishing machine I built in my shop, she is a single Mom and wants to learn so I have studied up here on YT to show her the right way to get started and avoid the pitfalls,,,,wanted to show her other ladies that are sharpening now, so Thank you. On the topic of fabric, this is the best video for sharpening scissors. No machine, no tin foil. This is on par with the cabinet makers sharpening chisels and planes, and although this is one of four steps, they are chopping hard wood. Two things, the higher grits will make the blade sharper and sharper and the sharper it is, the longer it will stay sharp. Under a microscope, 3000 grit leaves the edge like a phone book torn in half, but the 10,000 or 20,000 (it feels like paper) looks sharp! The second thing is there is a benefit to sharpening, flattening actually, the flat side. It's half the bevel after all and might have burrs or nicks, and it's dead simple to do. Just lay it flat, put a light pressure and 3 or 4 strokes, you're done, and you can see the shiny edge right away. That's all, I enjoyed this video, very well done.

3000 grit stone is considered a polishing stone and you really don’t need to go much beyond that level of grit for shears. If you go up to 10k or 20k grit, you’ll loose a lot of the bite for cutting fabrics. For planing wood, that would more appropriate, or for Japanese sushi knives.

Great vided!! Perfect timing for me. I have lots of really nice sewing sissors from my grandmother that I don't trust to just anyone to sharpen. I ordered a stone and am going to work on learning to sharpen on some cheaper sissors in the house and get some experience before I tackle the old really nice ones. I'm very excited to learn to do this myself!

Fantastic! Exactly what I was looking for: a quick but thorough tutorial on why and how to use a water whetstone. I’m going to use some old general purpose scissors first to practice. Then I’ll move on to some of my garden tools so they’re ready for spring!

I learn a lot, you really went into detail with it, and I'm so glad because it makes me understand the process. I tried so many thing to sharpen my scissors but it doesn't work, I bought fiskars sharpener, still don't work, I plan to try on stone, but I don't have it a home, I have at my workplace so I have to wait since its weekend, I'll try fiskars again, because that thing is expensive I'll need to give it a shot, thought don't have high hope for it...

Hmmm, I'm not sure. That could be the quality of the steel in the scissors or it could be what you are cutting. Anything with sequins will dull scissors super fast. Also polyester will dull them faster than cotton. Especially polyester fleece or faux fur. Those are the only ideas I have of why they are dulling so fast.

Here is a tip if you don't own sharpening stones. Take your nail files to grind the angle and remove the grinding marks from the factor and wrap some 1000 grit sandpaper around the file and draw it on the bevel 10 times. This will give you a nice edge without all of the fuss.

Thanks. This was really helpful especially knowing if your inherited stone is an oil or water stone. Aren't a lot of sissors made with stainless steal blades though? Is it effective to try to shappen stainless steel?

Thanks Sage. Yes you can absolutely sharpen stainless. We sharpen all of our kitchen knives and all but one is stainless (the other is carbon steel). Titanium bonded can be sharpened too. They will hold an edge longer than stainless but eventually they need to be sharpened.

I just strop mine with leather and green compound and they stay scary sharp for most of a 12 hour shift …you explained sharpening in a much easier way to grasp way than literally every guy on RU-vid who makes/sharpens knives ..thanks…..I’m trying to keep them so sharp I just drag them across the fabric without the chomp chomp action I also cut thick plastic bags in that manner luck I can make a cut and rip the rest .

Aluminum and sand paper didn't work for me. In fact they became much duller and didn't cut anything. So happy to find you. Going to try this and will let u know how it worked for me. Hopefully I can do it as well as you did. Am a little scared to do this.

Just FYI, at 8000 grit and above, is mostly for polishing the blade. In most cases it’s bragging rights when a blade can be looked at with a magnifying glass and no scratches can be seen. LOL I know, ya don’t have to say it. I use 12000 grit and above for my straight edge that I use for shaving. I can yes this is overkill but it sure is fun lol.
