Why didn't you check balance after you sharpened? Not good!

Don't forget to check the balance of the blade!!

Wow! Never realized how much nicer the removal/replacement of the deck is on the old Wheel Horse. No removable pins, no tools, just a couple hooks and the belt and off she goes. No balancing? I always check the balance on a little balancing cone, which costs about $3.
@dondale68
@dondale68 8 лет назад
+MiserableOldFart Bet that cone is cheaper than the spindle bearings! And it's easier to just balance the blades instead of changing the spindles!

In what direction does the file or grinding wheel go when sharpening the blades? Sideways along the "cutting edge", into the blade, or from the blade outward? My grandfather sharpened saws for a living (well was a farmer also) and I remember that there was a certain direction that was preferred. Guess same with knives. thanks

Nothing like being shown how to sharpen mower blades on a unit that has never seen a blade of grass.

I thought you had to balance the blades, and I'm not sure about this, but don't you also have to grind the back side to remove the fold or burs from when you grind the front side?
@madmaxxc45

what about blade balancing
@Bp6180
@Bp6180 9 лет назад
Much too complicated. No way would I ever remove the deck in order to remove the blades.
@mahocnc
@mahocnc 6 лет назад
..but one more thing, balancing blade after sharpening, you can do this by driving a small nail into a block of wood and hang blade horizontal. Oh..that was a long process and banging new paint for just sharpening blade, ...this is how I do it, have piece of plywood on a slant, one end resting on the seat of pick nick table then I drive up.
@RochesterAstro
@RochesterAstro 9 лет назад
I don't take everything apart, just take off the blades ! I jack up the front of the lawn tractor until the blades are accessible .heavy glove to hold the blade or 2x4 if it wont budge.bench grind and use a nail to check level. clean the grass off the deck and put em back on.

+Tesseraction Ain't it nice how them brand new nuts just come right off! I broke a 1/2'' dr , 6pt, 15/16 Craftsman (OLD SCHOOL) socket trying to break the nuts loose! My Husky breaker bar held up great!

Why go thru all the effort to remove the deck when its not required? You can simply remove each blade? This saves time and effort.
@FIXTechGuides
@FIXTechGuides 6 лет назад
Hi Tom, and thanks for the comment. We've found that removing the blade is easier with the deck removed, and it makes it much easier to show in this type of a video. If you're able to remove the blades without removing the deck, and it works well for you, then that's fantastic!

You forgot to check the balance and to mount the blades at a 90 degree angle from one another. Please read your service manual before doing work on your machine, folks.

Shouldn't you balance the blades before reinstalling?
@MusicForTheBroken

VERY important.
@Blackfourtrak
@Blackfourtrak 10 лет назад
He'll know if it's balanced or not when it's started up, it'll vibrate lovely and make the users hands go numb on the steering wheel, after sharpening- you balance- oh and a bit of copper slip doesn't go a miss on the blade bolts either when you put them back on, also you don't need to take of the deck, just lift the front or rear onto something and lay down with a socket and bar to undo the bolts, using a welding/thick glove on one hand to hold the blade and undo with the other :-D

How tight should a new belt be on a ride lawn mower?
@FIXTechGuides
@FIXTechGuides 6 лет назад
Thanks for the question. The belt should be tight enough that it is not going to slip off during operation. Typically you are looking for 1" of play or less when the mower is off and the belt is tightened. Good luck with your repair!
@briscoblank1477

Do the blades need to be in a certain position?
@jaydenhassager6303
@jaydenhassager6303 8 лет назад
+Brisco Blank 90 degrees apart, it will specify on the blade what top/bottom is but you should know that from common sense anyway.

Really wish I could have bought a John Deere.... the decks are much heavier duty than these . I hit an ant mound and my deck is warped on my almost new Bronco..... also have a Pony model same problem but I will not be spending any more money on troybuilt products. The quality is bullshit to say the least. The frames are no better than the mowers that Wal-Mart sells. Actually uses the same parts.
@fulleraaron
@fulleraaron 8 лет назад
wow that was painful to watch. ...I'm sure you could have removed those blades just fine with the deck all the way up. ...also use a file instead of a power tool for consistency then remember to balance your blade on a ball bearing.
@29strength

Why can't you just drive tractor onto ramps and remove blades? This would reduce time to remove/install deck...

@dondale68

+29strength Would if I could! I've gotta take some STUBBORN spindle nuts off, heat w/ propane and put an impact gun on them! NOT my mower!
@rummy98
@rummy98 9 лет назад
I would have sharpened my blades and cut my yard by the time he finished this. I've had a piece of wood slip out on me already and I almost cut my pinky off lol. After that I bought a blade clamp.
@arkbluewolf11
@arkbluewolf11 9 лет назад
What size is the spindle nut ???
@dondale68
@dondale68 8 лет назад
+arkbluewolf11 Most riders the nut is 15/16, if the blade has been on for a few years heat the nut w/ some propane n use a 1/2'' dr breaker bar, use new nuts (better safe than sorry) torque to 70-95ftlbs. Most walk behinds use a 5/8 hex 3/8-24 bolt

Wow, that is such a cheap mower. Paint dust falls off when he removes the deck. The deck flexes when he is removing the spindle nut 👎 so many steps to remove that deck 👎
@youtoobloser
@youtoobloser 9 лет назад
Wow removing that deck looks like a royal pain in the ass! Lol
@MiserableOldFart
@MiserableOldFart 8 лет назад
+youtoobloser Too many small pieces to detach and lose. But it's easy compared to a Kubota deck, which probably weighs about three or four times what that one does, and though there are no pins to lose or tools needed, getting the driveshaft off and back on is a real treasure, lol.

Why are you sharping blades on a brand new mower?
@FIXTechGuides
@FIXTechGuides 6 лет назад
Thanks for the question. Normally, you wouldn't need to sharpen blades on a new mower, but we simply wanted to show the process by which you would sharpen them.

Who taught you how to do this, you must get paid bty the hour, I could have had them sharpen till you unhook the deck, WOW terrrible video for blade sharpening

whats the point of showing how to remove the deck when not everyone watching has a deck that needs removing?? The whole point of this video should be how to sharpen and not how to remove deck!
