This video will be one of many centered around teaching Kenny, an Eastwood customer, the fundamentals and techniques needed to tackle a restoration project. It's always been our mission to affordably get tools in the hands of eager DIYers and fabricators of all skill levels, while sharing all the knowledge we can to help ensure a positive experience!
Kenny's 1969 Chevrolet C-10 Truck is a prime example of the various tasks most people tackle during their restoration: shaving fuel filler holes, replacing inner and outer rocker panels, replacing and patching heater box in the firewall, repairing cab corners, custom metal fab and various rust repairs.
We hope you can take away the knowledge and metal fab basics we teach Kenny and apply those techniques to your project at home!

Cover the hole with tape and run a razor blade on the edge of the hole. Put the cut out piece of tape on the new metal and this will give you a good patch panel.

It easier to use a piece of carton paper over the hole opening , spray paint the rear to reveal the opening.

i'd do anything for a video like this on a C-10 cab corner. Pretty much in the same boat new to welding and restoring cars. Started to do a Cab corner and I'm getting pretty overwheeled due to me not knowing to much lol.

At 6:25 you show the welder settings between H & I on the voltage and 6 & 7 wire speed whereas the suggested settings for .035 sheet metal with .023 wire are D4. I am currently working on the very same project 68 C20 and the MIG135. My prep is textbook and my gaps got tighter than you have illustrated here. However, I kept blowing through and had to start over twice so I have some questions. Are you using an extension cord? Angle of the gun to work 10-15 degrees? How thick is your patch? 20 gauge? Any suggestions? Maybe Matt can fly out west and give me a hand.JK

great work. what do you use for rust prevention on the back side after the patch is in place?

Internal Frame Coating is a good start, you can use it without the extension nozzle to coat the inside of this panel - www.eastwood.com/eastwood-internal-frame-coating-14oz-aerosol.html?

What is a good first welder to work on car body work. Anything from any brand and what is a good duty cycle. I used a miller in the past but that vo tech school. Which voltage is better.

That Eastwood they're using is probably fine. I just got a Hobart mig 140 for patching, it's a little more money but it is working well so far.

We're using the MIG 135, great for sheet metal - controls are really simple and we'e even had professional welders tell us it's they're go-to welder over the competitors! Best bang for your buck in our opinion - www.eastwood.com/mig-welder-110vac-135a-output.html

where is the ground connected? I set my machine as you have illustrated here and I keep getting "blow through". I am using the same machine.
@eastwoodco

Are you trying to hold the torch at different angles to the sheet metal? Rather than straight-on? Often a slightly different angle will prevent blow-thru since you're not directly splitting the hole/bad metal.Also, adjust heat and wire speed.

After watching the video with Bob teaching the camera guy, I've learned to hold the gun nozzle to a 15-20 degree angle to the work piece and I was clipping my wire to short. I'll post a video of what I've got going on. Thank you, Eastwood.

No mate... but I know rough work when I see it. Maybe the guy was new ? Don't know. I wouldn't want work like that on my stuff and if you were critical you wouldn't either. Just sayin...

Actually just rewatched and the guy is pretty new to metal so I take it back. Everyone has to start somewhere so good on him, keep it up.
