In today's video, Kirby restores a pair of Carmina Replica Russian Reindeer Chukka Boots. These are Kirby's weekend warrior boots and are desperately in need of some shoe polish! The replica Russian reindeer leather is an oiled leather, very similar to Chromexcel, so the proper protocol for shining these shoes is different than standard calfskin.
Saphir Medaille d'Or's Oiled Leather Cream is perfect for Chromexcel and other oiled leathers because the oils restore the natural look of the leather. Be careful not to use any standard shoe polishes designed for calfskin. The waxes in these products will alter the texture of the leather.

I only have one pair of chromexcel Alden Indy and I don't want to buy that much of leather product just for oiled leather. So I am using saphir renovateur only. Not sure Its good for the leather or not, but so far it did the job pretty well.

When I first started shining my shoes myself, I was looking for the regular Saphir Pommadier Creme and accidentally got the black oiled leather cream. I've had it for over a year and have no use for it. Maybe I will try to get a pair of oiled leather shoes/boots. What would happen if I use this oiled leather cream on my regular leather oxfords?

It doesn't absorb well into calfskin in my experience. I accidentally used it on a polishable leather once. My friend brought me the boots he wears for work and it was only later I found out it was a mineral tanned hide and would have worked best polished. It's very hard to get the oil/soft waxes to absorb, possible but a pain, it also will soften the leather and leave it more vulnerable to scratches and gouges. You have to brush it in with a very high heat and apply pressure when conditioning. I personally prefer conditioning each leather I own with the best matching product. You can polish an oil tanned leather as an example. But it will never take the shine that a leather that is meant to be polished would.

Renovateur and cream polish would work perfectly fine. I do it all the time with my CXL boots. I can't justify buying another product when the other stuff works so well for basically everything

It works extremely well with pull-up leather. I've used it to much success with Wickett & Craig's Oiled Latigo, Chrome Excel, Horween Predator Leather, Seidel's Oil Tanned Walnut Bison, and a very light Nubuck that is Oiled like SB Foot's Copper Rough and Tough. I wouldn't use it on a Roughout Leather. I have yet to try it on some Oiled Kudu but judging from the Kudu I think Saphir's Renovateur Spray for Nubuck's and Roughout would be a better fit given how it feels dry. Anything that is smooth skinned and pull-up in my experience you are good to go! Oiled Leather Cream mostly resides in the surface area and I always find the color(neutral) is back to normal after 3 days of wear and brushing. If nothing else some leathers tends to lighten up overtime with it rather than Darken, for those of us who enjoy the patina process rather than introducing a pigment. Both have their merits but it depends on what you prefer.

Hey Kirby, just about to purchase a Saphir Oiled Leather Cream. Can you polish Chromexcel leather with the Saphir Cream Shoe Polish 1925 after the leather cream or is that not advisable?

Really not advisable because the higher concentration of waxes in the Pommadier Cream Polish will change the surface texture of chromexcel, which is oiled and not waxed. The Saphir Oiled Leather Cream has almost no waxes.

No, vegetable cooking oils can ruin leather. In the short term it can soften leather with discoloration, but it will not nourish the leather. Then due to mild levels of acidity and oxidation, it can break down leather/ grow mold. Mink oil if over used can have similar results, yet it is much more stable. Stick to products that are actually MEANT for leather use.

I'm not sure how accurate it is to call this 'replica Russian reindeer'. It's not made from reindeer (which can be sourced), it's calf. It's humbly and simply reviving a method of tanning which had gone out of common use, called Russia leather, also referred to in French as 'Cuir de Russie' (which gave its name to the Chanel perfume). It's not replica, it's a genuine article in its own right.

It's a replica pattern and look of the Russian reindeer hides found in 1973 among the wreckage of the Metta Catharina that sank in 1786.

@@lanzarlaluna Respectfully, I disagree, it's not. It's not the same animal, it's not the same colour, it doesn't smell the same, it doesn't handle in the same way. I have seen and handled both in person and stating one is a replica of the other is like saying an Audi is a replica of a Ferrari because it has four wheels. Further to this, 'replica' is a synonym of 'imitation' and has a negative connotation. It cheapens the product and does no justice to all the work that Baker's tannery has gone to make this product (and trust me it's a lot of work, time and research). Russia reindeer and Baker's Russia calf are two different leathers both tanned in a similar process - but different products. Just like all tanneries using chrome tanning to make box calf, each offering a different quality leather
