I grew shooting an heirloom Harrington & Richardson Model 1885 16ga side by side. I got it from my dad, who got it from his dad, who won it on the Atlantic City, NJ boardwalk by playing pinball! It’s a phenomenal piece with a priceless story. It’s a beautiful upland game special engraved with a young man and his dog hunting birds. The tubes are choked differently; modified and full. It’s a great little shooter! I have been blessed to take many species of duck, geese, pheasant, a turkey, several whitetail deer, and thousands upon thousands of hand thrown clays and hundreds of rounds of sporting clays. Super easy to shoulder and sight, the action is crisp and almost silent. I absolutely love my double and wouldn’t trade it for a Ferrari! Thank you for the reminder about the fun I’ve had blasting away with the good old H&R! -CY Castor

Amazing channel.. Thank you.. I just bought an affordable SxS bobwhite by CZ-USA.. Love that English cut stock on it.. feels so natural on the trap range.. I liked your analogy of how a SxS is a weekend gun that puts a smile on your face.. Agree 100 %

I like the car/shotgun analogy but I'd take it a step further. An O/U is your modern car with an auto box - it goes where you point it, usually quite fast and is a very good piece of kit for the job of getting from A-B. A SxS is a manual sports car of the 90/00s- arguably more elegant but less practical it makes the journey more interesting but will still get you from A-B if you give it the correct inputs. A hammer gun is a British sports car of the 60/70s, with no synchro on the gear box and entertaining reliability issues. Depending on your maintenance you will get from A-B, but it's going to require a lot more work on your behalf, but it makes the tale of the journey interesting. Percussion muzzle loading is your pre war car - it's not going anywhere fast, you have to make your own spares but everyone wants a go. A flintlock is a horse. You will get from A-B only if the horse is in agreement with you and sometimes (most famously recently "Angel Boy" from the women's modern pentathlon) it says no.

So over and under is more accurate and easier to aim than a sxs? Wouldn't a semi auto be a modern car lol?
@czechmix221

I much prefer the over under, but I still enjoy a sxs. I occasionally use a sxs for upland hunting and I feel it’s part of the tradition.

Great stuff, I just picked up a little SxS in 28 bore. I also have a 20 bore in OU and a 12 bore in pump action. I love them all and truly enjoy each in their own way. I went out with some friends and found them all but fighting their weapons to the ground. They are water fowlers and normally shoot pump guns. We had set up for upland game shooting. I was much faster and hit more birds. I gave them some coaching and they were soon hitting. It was a great day and all had fun. The SxS is a gun that you must be apart of and not muscle around.

Nice video. I'm going to be picking up my first side by side at my local sporting goods store very soon. I'm a bit of a traditionalist, so the classic English style scatter gun was instantly appealing to me. I sure am looking forward to busting some clays and then (hopefully) some upland game birds. Please make more videos. Very informative and helpful! Cheers!

Great movie, even if autofocus teased a bit :) I would really like to see a picture, drawing or movie of that aim picture you should have on a side by side. I have only been hunting for 3 years, but have from the beginning decided to only use side by side, but I still have problems hitting (50% - 75% hit) even though I shoot clays at least once a week in the summer.

I get some funny looks for taking my side by side to the clay club, but It's what I grew up with, my grandad shot a side by side, my dad shoots a side by side and I shoot a side by side.....no chokes, no fancy rail straight up sport shooting at its best.

David: I have a new Merkle 28 gauge SxS. It is quite light and during recoil my finger brushes the second trigger and I get a bam-bam. I have tried shooting gloves with a firmer grip with limited success. Should I have a qualified gunsmith increase the trigger pull on the back trigger?

When you talk about mounting it delicately, does that apply for when the stock is a pistol grip or is it only for english stock guns? Thanks

I’m in Canada, and have learned to shoot pumps, autos, and O/U. I love antiques, and guns, so antique guns were a no brainer. My parents came from Ireland and Scotland, and my dad used to tell me about a neighbour who used to shoot rabbits with a side by side, and bring some over to them. So the romance of the side by side is pretty big with me. I recently got a lovely old Belgian exposed hammer SxS and took it to the range. To my surprise, when I shouldered it, I found myself looking down at the barrel, rather than along it. As you e mentioned in other videos, the comb is very low compared to a more modern gun, and I’m not sure how to get it lined up. It looks in your video that you have it much lower on the cheek, but it also looks like the butt is in a horribly low position for the shoulder. Do you have, or do you know any videos that really compare say an O/U vs a SxS?
@jimf1964
@jimf1964 Год назад
@Ski I came here because I was busting my cheek with an old Belgium SxS, and couldn’t figure out why. Also I seemed to be looking down at the barrel and not along it. Despite shooting pumps and semi from several manufacturers, it just wasn’t working. I’ve learned what the problem was since, and just bagged a few grouse with a new, antique Spanish 20g two weeks ago. I love the thing. The old Belgium 12g I’m still trying to learn to love, but part of the problem is the stock doesn’t fit me very well. We have a range for clays that you have to walk to different stages, and they come out like running rabbits, or like a flushing grouse, or like a pheasant etc…it’s way more interesting than a thrower just chucking the exact same thing over and over. That’s boring. But I find with a range like that, or with a friend who will throw surprises, it’s much more fun. It’s also pretty good practice for the real thing. The thrower doing the same thing over and over is good for new people to get the hang of it, but I agree is pretty boring for someone with experience. I’m surprised you can get close enough to a coyote by walking around with a shotgun though.

Hello from Northern Ireland. I have 2 side by sides and they are my go to shotguns for everything. One of my favourite past times is walking along the hedges for rabbits and pigeons for the table with my classic doubles. :)

@@beeboop1726 Hey! Nice to hear from you. Since I wrote that post, I found a wonderful antique Spanish SxS in 20gauge. I love it so much. I’ve hunted grouse (partridge) with it quite successfully. It’s my favourite shotgun now. The shotgun I was having trouble with was a black powder 12 gauge. Exposed hammers. I was shooting light smokeless in it ( gunsmith said light loads would be fine), but I was having an awful time with it. Since then I’ve put a pad on the stock to lengthen it, and am going to make a sort of wedge to put in the pad to change the angle, plus I’ve learned the subtle difference on how to shoulder them. I’m still not a fan of that old 12 gauge, but it’s over 120 yrs old, so it’s still cool to have. I live in Montreal and go up north a couple hours drive to camp in the bush, and walk down small dirt roads to hunt grouse in the fall. The greater Montreal area has like 5 million people, so unfortunately I can’t just go for a walk and hunt. 😢

In my opinion he should have broken the targets sooner so you could see them break. Or reposition the camera man for a better angle. Basically when he says hold the firearm delicately he means stay loose and don't tense up.

Hi David so on a over and under you shoot the bottom barrel first ok But with a side by side which should you shoot first left or right?
@scruffysstash
@scruffysstash 2 года назад
Not sure if you ever got an answer, but typically the front trigger first, then rear. Which, would be right barrel then left (on my SxS). However, it depends on the choke of each barrel. Range of your target would dictate which barrel you use, which is useful in hunting. Target clays, typically lesser choked barrel first, then more restricted choke second, as the clays are moving away from you, increasing distance to target.

What ur trying 2 say is: By lightly touching ur cheek against the buttstk, thus u'll end up seeing a bit of the rib. And dat's how it should b for the SxS as usually, the DAH is lower than an O/U, Pump, or Auto?
