How to Shoot Pistols Part 9 ~ Target Analysis is KEY to becoming a good shot!

I just took an afternoon with my Ruger .22 and watched this series. I watched a video, then went and shot a clip full with what I just learned, then went back inside and watched the next video. Before I started my groups were 10” at 10 yards, but now I can consistently hit a 4” plate at 30 yards!!! I am absolutely amazed! Thank you so much for this information! And I also appreciate you giving God all the glory.

I am totally new to pistol shooting at the ripe "old age" of 67. I inherited my grandfather's S&W 38 SP snub nose pistol. I went to my local range and could barely get rounds on paper at 25 feet. Thank you for the 9 video series on how to shoot a pistol. I'm following each step to improve my accuracy. Your comments about how novices feel that a single action shot is almost like a "hair trigger" rang true with me. I was afraid of the S&W 38 SP cocked position because the gun seemed to fire on its own. Yeah, dangerous I know! But, after viewing your video series I calmed down and slowed down and practiced using your guidelines. Thank you so much for your videos!

Watching You Tube videos on shooting can be confusing and often lead to discouraging results at the range. Thank you for bringing clarity regarding the fundamentals of shooting. I can’t wait to get to the range to begin putting this new knowledge into practice.

Shooting rifles, I tought myself to hold the trigger press even after recoil, until I see the target back in my scope, then I let off the trigger. It will help from jerking or slapping the trigger. You would not believe how many rifle shooters I've seen slap and jerk the trigger. I took the round out of my buddy's rifle and he almost fell off the shooting bench flinching when he thought it had a live round in it, and I told him, that's not a flinch, that's crazy flinch. Great videos.

Came back to pay this series a re-visit and every one was thumbsed up from the last time.

Just to be clear, these pistol videos have helped me a lot.

Just watched the whole series. I have been shooting handguns almost as long as you. I'm quite good at it. I am getting ready to teach my girlfriend how to shoot.Your videos have helped me a great deal. In particular the explanation of the double action pull. I got her a new S&W model 19 just like the one you got. Loved your video where you showed the improvements they made; that's how I found you. My regular carry gun is a Colt SAA in 45 long colt. It's the pistol I started on when I was about 10 years old, and it is still the one I can shoot the best. Like I have told others: if your up against 15 armed people and you have no cover; that high capacity semi-auto will still have many shots left after you fall.

This whole series is full of great info. Thank you for putting this together.

I have 97 sights devoted to guns, and 4 of them i really listen to. The other 93 i am slowly deleting. Oh the 7 rat shooting vids, thoes I'll keep. From the time i finished my 3 years in the Army i was ready to do shooting and hunting, well it didn't go as planed. At 26 things came to a halt. What a fantastic series. I acquired a Beretta Neos 22lr pistol a while ago. I think that this will be what I practice these principles with. Low recoil, long sight geometry, and a very comfortable handgun to shoot. It fits my hand very well. I am going to print out the capstone of every video in this series onto a sheet of paper and leave it on the bench in front of me to read. Your short video series on precision shooting handguns is a great collection of techniques that can help everyone that wants to improve their shooting accuracy. I would say your video on Disassembly and care of Smith & Wesson revolvers is excellent too. Truthfully, few other firearm channels spend zero time explaining the importance of basic shooting techniques. Most channels promote rapid-fire Freddy games and completely ignore and overlook the first steps to shooting accurately. They prefer showing off to informing shooters on how to improve shooting skills. They promote ammo sales and new gun models that are seldom better than older ones. Shooting large amounts of ammunition has nothing to do with being proficient with handguns, shotguns or rifles. Americans have the most gun owners in the World. Yet win fewer Olympic Gold medals than countries where you can’t even keep guns your home. How sad is that, if that isn’t embarrassing I don’t know what is. If you never keep score of shooting results how could anyone know if they improved or not. Granted one hand Bullseye shooting sets the standard for accuracy and may not be every shooters cup of tea. However, if you think shooting rifles made to hit targets at five-hundred meters at fifty feet to fifty yards proves any high level of shooting skill you have rocks in your head. It is not how many bullets you can shoot, it is how many times your bullet hits the Bullseye. Take that to the Bank Freddy!

This series was a good refresher even though I am basically limited to airguns if I want to shoot a lot. Breaking it into segments was brilliant and allows a viewer to focus. Highly recommend your channel.

I realize these videos were several years back but I still wanted to comment. In 1994 I achieved the President's Hundred at Camp Perry as part of the NY State Bullseye Pistol Team. Shortly after I earned the Distinguished Pistol Shot Medal by winning the leg match in Wallingford Connecticut. The Distinguished Shot Pistol Medal, #1,056, took 3 years to achieve. As life happens, I transferred jobs from NY to Miami Florida and stopped competing for 25 years. Since retiring I found a nearby shooting range to see how much skill I had lost. At age 71 it all came back fairly quick. It's all because I did not forget the same exact fundamentals you were talking about. Great videos and well done. Front sight/trigger control.

The skills taught in this series are just as relevant now as they were years ago. Thank you for putting these videos together!

Thank you for this excellent series! I recently took up hand gun shooting and was very frustrated. In hindsight, I knew I had a problem with flinching but had no idea how to really deal with it. I also had a bad habIt I was unaware of, looking at the target and not the front sight. Anyway after watching your series a couple times, my shooting has improved dramatically! Two simple concepts of concentrating on the front sight and "pressing" not squeezing the trigger. I just returned from the range with my HK45 and was putting most of my shots on target, with an absolutely amazing difference from before. Again thank you for this series as it really elevated my shooting in a very short time.

I'm an amateur pistol shooter; even recently picked up a Ruger MK4 which has helped a a lot and been great fun. I've suffered from almost every issue you've discussed here but am slowly improving. The one that has haunted me the most is the anticipation of recoil and it's very evident when I'm shooting my Glock model 22. I also have a Beretta 92sf which I hooting much much better than the Glock. I will say though, I haven't had a problem with 5:40, I'm rarely shooting those groups with anything centerfire..

Thank you for doing this great series. I'm older than you, and have just taken up the sport of gallery shooting with a local gun club. Wish you were in Southern New England. Would hire you in a heartbeat to help these aged eyes and hands.

Great series. Making a sport out of range time makes it so much fun. The mathematics of shooting this adds up to very few shots per session. A turret press makes easy work of center fire ammo needs. Many new shooters get lost in the complexity, gadgetry, and tacticool. Putting 30 rounds at 25 yards into a bullseye only takes... 30 rounds. Loading a weeks worth does not mean 1,200 rounds per hour at the bench.

I learned a lot. Thanks. It's refreshing to see a shooting video without pop bottles and pumpkins.

Thank you very much for this series. My last trip to the range a fellow next to me said he was a LE instructor and noticed I had a couple things I could do to improve my score. I was not using a good grip and it was allowing it to change as I went through the magazine. Also, I was letting the barrel droop on the last shot. These two changes dramatically improved my shots the rest of the day (Thanks Bob) I came back to your videos and found this series and enjoyed reviewing/applying each step you've presented. Best target analyses I've heard yet. Great serious videos, no b.s. here. As my right hand and arm are jacked up do to age and trying to act like I am younger, im going to use your teachings to go back and learn to shot left handed better untill i can reuse my right. I believe as a concealed carrier I should be proficient with my 3" barrel pistol... I'd like to hear opinions on what the minimum accuracy standard should be with your carry gun. I practice at 5,7,10 and 13 yards, any opinions on minimum scoring for a given distance would be appreciated.

Very nice set of videos. They are most helpful. One thing I didn't see was sight adjustment between 25 and 50 yards. I'm focused on using the center hold technique instead of the six o'clock hold. Hopefully you can expand a little on that topic, including the sight-in distances.
