Most photographers will not venture out on a rainy day or night. So those who do can capture images that are rare and unique.
With a bit of planning and fore-thought, rain can offer some great advantages to both subject and photographer.
This shoot with the amazing @laylaschillert will show you how to do it.
Keeping gear dry is a major consideration that can be solved by using plastic bags over lights and camera (if needed).
Shooting from a covered area with visual access to the rain will ensure that your model will stay relatively dry and comfortable for the entirety of the shoot.
Back-lighting the rain drops adds impact to the images as does the use of coloured gels

"you can't see, she's unter the shelter". Given the fact, that she's completely dry and the floor underneath her shoes is dry as well I'd say it will be noticed, she doesn't stand in the rain ;) Aside of this your demonstration and explanation about the lighting is much appreciated, thanks.

Wondering what the spread of the speedlight is and what focal length, f stop and of course ISO used. This information would be helpful along with the great instructions you give. Love all your videos. Thanks

The speedlights were set to 24mm on the zoom with the built in plastic spreader as well. I think I recall that the iso was 200, aperture F8 and shutter speed 1/125. Thank you for your feedback.

Awesome, Love your Work, Creativity, Explanations, Teaching, etc. I notice You don't use tethering which I like. Tethering at my advanced age of almost 84 years is a hazar to me. I failed to comment on Your shoot with Your Mum & Dad, My Bride of 62 Years & I loved it. Thank You Sir for all of your wonderful Video's & shoots.

These shots are amazing is so many ways, and your style and instruction are so wonderful. Newcastle Photography, is there any chance that you're coming to teach at The Portrait Masters/WPPI in Las Vegas in March 2024?

Oh, I looked up "@laylashillert" but I think it's "@laylaschillert", and that she's Layla Rose Schillert and is already famous for being a young singer on an Australian television competition.

Very nice photography. I know similar "rain photos" taken with studio flashes. It allways bugged me that that the drop seem to lift up insteat of falling down. I assumed this war due a long flash duratio of "cheap" studio stobes. In this video speedlites were used and I assume that the flash duration is much shorter that of cheap studio strobes. However the raindrops also seem to lift up instead of falling down in the photo. I am confuded. Layla is a funny model. I enjoyed her funny dance very much.

Thanks for your reply. Even expensive flashes will often show the tail on the raindrops. It is caused by the light fall off after the initial flash. Some flashes have a very fast flash duration which minimises this but they don't necessarily cost more. I like the comet like shapes rather than sharp dots. Thank you for your nice comments. Yes Layla is amazing.

Hello, good day, ask the camera I use with the lens, what models are they, I am starting out in photography and I would like to know more about photography, I have a Nikon D7000 and I really liked the quality of Layla photographs. They are very clear, Greetings from Tijuana B.C. Mexico
@buckturgidson9666
@buckturgidson9666 9 месяцев назад
The camera doesn't really matter for these pictures. Your D7000 will do just fine with a cheap 35 mm or 50 mm f/1.8. What you need are 2-3 speedlights with light stands, one set of color filters for one of them, a diffusor or softbox and an assistant with a hose if there is no real rain. If you are on a budget, I can recommend Yongnuo YN-685 speedlights with a YN622 TX to control them.

Hi. Buck is correct in that you can do these images with any camera. I use an old D750 with the kit lens. I prefer yn560IV flashes with a RF603N trigger.
