This video is a demonstration of how to shoot the U.S. Army Rifle Qualification Course for the M1911 and M1911A1 dismounted as of 1940 referencing FM 23-35. I am certain the procedure is documented elsewhere for the remainder of the 1911’s service in the military (another 40+ years after 1940) but this is the only field manual I found outlining the course.
You will need at least 45 rounds of ammo, a Type L target at 25 yards, and a second target, preferably a large silhouette, at 15 yards. In the video, I explain the dimensions and how to create the type L target at home. There are time limits for some shots so if you really want to go hard core, a second person with a stop watch to act as a grader would be handy. If you had assistance from a partner you could shoot the course in less than 30 minutes.
I would strongly recommend downloading a copy of FM 23-35 so that you have the reference material in front of you. If you can’t find it at your local library a quick google search will lead you to one.
I am not a qualified gunsmith or expert marksman I’m simply sharing my experiences.

Very cool video! Just got my first 1911a1 from 1943 and was hoping to try this exact thing out!

Very interesting! I'm curious, did you use a 6 o' clock hold or did you bisect the bullseye with the sights?

I aimed for the bottom of the bullseye as much as I could. I should have mentioned that in the footage. Thank you for coming by!

Do you have a link for this document?

I’ve tried a couple times it won’t let me paste the hyperlink for some reason. If you Google “Army FM 23-35” it will be Adobe documents in one of the first three or four results. Thanks for coming by!
