Shortening a bolt is much easier than you may think. You'll only need a few basic shop tools to do what's needed.

Two quick tips. Dremel cutting wheels work great for bolts. PLUS leave the nut on the bolt, cut it, then turn the nut back off the bolt to debur it.

Great idea and I would add to that, use the more durable cut wheels for the Dremel as opposed to the small friction wheels as those little things shatter if it gets out of line when cutting metal

Leaving the nut on is a really good idea.

Thanks, will do! I'm hoping to do more videos talking about creating a successful business as a metal artist which should translate to any type of creative hands on job. I want to see more people doing what they're passionate about.

20 minutes later, Doug needs that exact 8-32 that he tossed...off to cut another one!

So true! I'm notorious for throwing things in the shop. Especially drill bits, I have an area of scrap metal for art projects where all used drill bits get flung haha

Thanks TIm, I'm glad to just get a video out even though its a bit basic. The summer is finally coming to an end and the shop is nicer to be in for longer periods. Looks like you're staying busy, you doing some really great art. I'm hoping to get back to doing more creative work soon.

The pliers are a good use to shorten a bolt. An add on to that way. After cutting to size. Continue to screw bolt in. This way, use a small file to bevel the bolt, then remove. All good. Know if only there was a way to have people wash there Dam dishes and put them away. Know that would be impressive!!!

Now you're talking! Maybe a dish dispensing device where the user must insert a coin to get the dish but must wash it to get the coin back. Like those shopping carts hahaha

Not sure about the hacksaw blade and a drill. I sometimes use my portaband to cut bolts, which is kinda the same from the blade and bolt point of view, but the view from the soft flesh of my fingers is a bit different.

I'm not sure how long your hacksaw blade will last if you use it for bolts... maybe you have a *dedicated* one... Another thing many folks don't realize is that hacksaws only cut in the *forward* direction, and weighting the saw on the "back stroke" will dull the blade.

Stanley used to make a bolt cutter that is an overgrown version of the wire cutters. It is model 84-205, I inherited mine but I was able to buy a used one on EBay for a friend. It is great for cutting bolts up to 5/16-18 and is well worth having if you cut bolts regularly. Tubalcain has a video about this tool: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-cHjmPUrxtgA.html

When using wire cutters to cut bolts, make sure you start the screw from the threaded side. If you are sitting on a boat and you're going to cut the last screw you have to finish the project, and you've been there all day sweating your ass off, and you start it from the wrong side leaving a burred edge on the screw...well lets just say even the fish blushed due to all the cussing.
