How To: Shorten A Cordless Blind Guide.

The only thing I don't get is why you separated the ladder strings and then later just cut them of anyway! Makes no sense.

Trust me, you do not need scissors to remove the vinyl slats they tear at the elongated holes with the ease of tearing a piece of paper. I just did it to 20 unneeded slats. One more thing plan on going 2 slats lower than the top of the window sill and make that lowest slat the lowest remaining one. The reason for this is, you want "friction" where the bottom rail touches the sill when finished. You want the ability to lower the rail past the sill and ease it up into place by having your fingers under the rail while raising it to a point to let's say 1/2" below the sill and just "tuck it in" to the flat sill area. You will not see any front to back sway since the rail is making good contact with the sill. When you pull the blinds to lower them beyond the sill by having extra length, there will be default tension on the rail as you raise the rail and "tuck" it into place and it will not sway front to back. Just adding my 2 cents, the above video is very informative and my above method is based on a mistake I made with my first shortening, and in my case the bottom rail is just "kissing" the sill and front to back sway exists. Had I allowed a slat or 2 extra, all would have been good.

Love the video. You should have shown pulling the plug and how the line was attached to the plug. Just a thought.

Thank you very much for posting this how-to. Helped me big time in shortening my recently purchased Levolor cordless vinyl blinds ("Trim & Go"). The instructions that came with the blinds warned that "These blinds cannot be shortened due to the cordless operating system" which was contrary to their instructions from the exact same style of blinds I bought two years ago that included a direction sheet for how to shorten. Confused, I called Levolor's customer service 800 number and spoke to a rep who said that they did not recommend shortening these style of blinds "but there have been customers who figured out how to do so successfully." It appears that Levolor has chosen to do this owing to complaints from customers who screwed up, thereby rendering their blinds useless. Hence the absence of blind shortening directions with my recent purchase. I had to be extra careful as the hole through which the lift cord travels through each vane is now a very small hole (not the larger oblong hole as in your example) and requires extra diligence in cutting. Thanks for this how-to!

Awesome video. My daughter wanted now blinds and it was a great project for her and I do together. Our blinds hand slightly crooked. I see the clear plastic insert inside each plug that the string attaches to. Our right side is lower and that’s the side that is not attached to the rewind mechanism. I think that’s the side we have bring up via that clear insert

These blinds come with directions on how to shorten, but it's so much easier to watch you do it, step by step. Thanks for the video.

I just shortened 4 of these blinds by breaking the slats. Grab up to 4 at a time one hand on either side, pull back away from the small hole around the "cord not to be cut" and pull back. They easily snap. Even 5 or 6 slats at a time will snap.

Still confused about the center raising string. You said not to cut it at all, but at the end when your putting the ladder strings stuffed in the bottom. that center string is shorter. I assume its under tension somewhere and it naturally shortens. IS this true or did I miss something. Thanks great video

I had to cut off quite a bit for small windows. I fround bending and snapping at the hole much easier and never come close to cutting the center rope.

Thank you. I was able to shorten blinds with cord. But was intimidated by cordless. It is much less expensive just buy the right width and shorten length. I have hunter douglas, they were pricey but I will take tackle the shortening.

Why do all the cutting on the centers of the ladders when most of it is going to be cut off anyway?

Quick question, i followed the wrong way to shorten my cordless blinds. I ended up removing the plugs at the bottom and untieing everything so i could take slats out without cutting them. But when i did this i think the cord in the middle of the blinds rolled up and im not sure how i can get them back... is there away or do i habe to get new blinds😰

so, dummy me cut the center string and it recoiled up into the unit. Any hope for me??

i was repairing the broken ones but they were at the top and half way inbetween..... so i cut the pulley at bottom and the string wound up and now theres only 1 string i how to i get the other string out for the left side......ugh

Hello I was trying to remove and replace a couple broken slats and the center string on both sides disappeared. I don’t know what happened.

I cut the center string, now what? One side of the 70" vinyl blind, string disappeared! I guess, spring-loaded?

How do you know how much tension to put on coil if the strings retract all the way up? I spent two hours doing surgery on one to have it only pull half the length I needed

What brand are those blinds? Levolor claims their cordless mini blinds cannot be shortened, but I’m hoping that isn’t true.

Should have looked at your video but instead I’ll be headed to Walmart to return this defective one (because of me) because there was no instruction how to shorten these as opposed to the string version…and of course, as soon as I cut them, the tension strings zipped right up to the top….

$7 Dollar General blinds can be ripped off by hand. Our cats DESTROYED them. We have upgraded to Levolor 2” faux wood blinds. I’m tired of buying cheap blinds. These will outlive me.

What if you're don't have a plug

Your video gave me an idea but the camera was too far away and you often blocked it :-( Sorry but it really didn't help.

Yes, I know, there is a reason for having longer blinds: One may have relocated or erred in purchasing, or did some window upgrades. -------------------- Initially, the better way would be to measure the window frames and buy accordingly.

Why cut off the slats??? If you do it a different way and keep them whole, you can use them to replace broken ones. 😳😳😳

I would think that by putting a hole about 1/4" from the end and use a piece of decorative rope (smaller). Once the lower portion of the blinds is tied I would then, put a fabric bow on top of that. Of course, if they are cheap charlie vinyl blinds I would rather keep the vinyl on. Just an idea to keep plastic out of the landfills when the government does not restrict the amount of products being made of plastic.

no no no no ... You do not need to do all that extend the blinds all the way pull the plugs out untie the plugs take your slats off cut your ladders put your center string back in town not around the cap after you insert your bottom rail
