About Me:
I am a professional singer with 30+ years of experience living in Dublin (originally from Ohio) and singing regularly in cover bands throughout Ireland. Over my career, I’ve sang in bands such as “The Runaways” (not the Joan Jett band, we were only 15 at the time and hadn’t heard of her band - this was before the internet!), and “White Knights” - both of those bands in Ohio before I moved to Los Angeles and formed an original band called Mood Trip, which was fairly successful in the mid-late 90’s producing our own music (listen here: www.moodtrip.co...) and playing the sunset strip regularly (Whiskey, Roxy, Coconut Teazer), but eventually I married an Irish girl and moved to Ireland where I have sang with cover bands such as The Glitter Bugs, The Usual Suspects, Spring Break, and Masquerade. I have also recently started teaching vocal tutorials at BIMM Dublin as well as singing in cover bands regularly for a living now (scrapping the day job and focusing only on music since 2018). I have been lucky enough in my career to support Cher in Belfast SSE Arena 2019, and sing U2’s “Vertigo” with U2’s very own drummer Larry Mullen on the kit in 2016.
Why listen to me?:
* I didn’t start a good singer so I’ve learned a LOT over the years and I want to pass that learning on to YOU now.
* I’ve made a TON of mistakes on the way and damaged my voice at times in the process of learning the right way to sing (via the WRONG way!) - with that, I can save you damaging your voice through bad techniques
* I’m DOING it on a regular basis - performing is how I make my living so I am WALKING THE TALK OR TALKING THE WALK (whatever the phrase is)…
* I CARE about YOU and serving you the best I can….why should I care? It’s my Dharma (life goal/path) to sing (perform for people) and help others who are learning to sing and perform, to help anyone who wants to get better…with that, THANK YOU for watching!!!

I was under the impression that Tate used head voice, but never falsetto. The two are often confused but are very very different.
@RockYourBestVocals
@RockYourBestVocals Год назад
True they are confused very often and you may be right... I think the difference is the amount of cord closure (head voice is a more tight/complete cord closure, while falsetto allows more air through and sounds breathy)... thinking back, it's probably more 'head voice' that he uses since I don't really hear a lot of air pushing through... thanks for taking the time to watch and comment!

@@the-dave-house-projectI just can remember one, in "Somebody to love" (Queen cover) around 3:41, that sounds falsetto to me. Maybe he was trying to mímic Freddie Mercury which used a lot of falsetto.

@the-dave-house-project Год назад
@@benitokamelo252 Interesting! Going to go check that out right now. Ok... it's a bit hard to tell because of the effects on the vocals, but you could be right. Tate has hit higher notes without falsetto for sure, but he may find it easier to use these days. It's not like he's not in his 60's.

Amazing video! Can't agree enough with the mindset. The worst thing a teacher can do is put baseless limits on you. The only way to know if something is possible is give it your all. You could easily be the first to find a way, so don't give up. Worst case scenario is you learn a ton along the way.

Hey Michael, I don't set limits on myself or my students - I believe in 100% possible 100% of the time... Thank you as always for taking the time to watch and offer such insightful comments - really appreciate you!!!🤘🏼😎🤘🏼

Yes and no…I agree with the baseless limits sentiment. That’s total nonsense and you should get a new teacher. But you also have to make sure you understand the physicality behind the human voice. I’ve worked with dozens of singers over the years and I’ve seen cases of nodes, injuries and missed work/opportunity. Beyond any of this, developing your own personal “x-factor” is paramount. Geoff Tate is beloved because of a style he cultivated. The idea is to find something within yourself that makes people go “did you hear that guy?!” Imitation is merely a teaching tool in the hands of the most creative people and that’s the biggest takeaway from videos like this, imo

Amazing content. I love, and support, anybody out there who will tell others they truly can do anything they want. In my life, there have been many things I was told were impossible. I've always believed the question that needs answered isn't whether you "can or cannot" do something, because that answer is yes of course you can, but "how can you" do the thing you want to do. I answered my "how" question and did the things I was told I could not, and it sounds like through many different teachers and techniques you found the combination that answered your "how" because I can hear for myself you absolutely can sing like Geoff Tate. Bravo!!

I cannot believe that your teacher used to say that you couldn't sing like Geoff Tate because you're a baritone. Guess what guys? Geoff Tate is a baritone too! Ironic, isn't it? Anyways, I am always been obsessed by Geoff Tate and I am studying the Cry these days. I can see why a usually get so tired while using that reinforced falsetto. Too much air. While now I realize that Tate's falsetto is more about placement and maybe low larynx to add that sort-of-operatic tone. I will reach out with you to learn more.
@RockYourBestVocals
@RockYourBestVocals 3 года назад
Hey Luigi, indeed my teacher was 'old school' and arguably had 'quite enough' of me singing along with the soprano girls, so she wanted to give me a 'beat down' - HAHA! No hard feelings, I just ignored her limits... As for Tate's falsetto, yes - try using as little air as possible to project the note (you do NOT need a lot of air to produce a great falsetto tone!) Also, don't focus on a 'low larynx' really... just relax as if you are speaking the parts and you will not think about your larynx position (often people focus on the placement of their larynx leading to 'psyching ones self out' making you sing WORSE!) Thank you for taking the time to watch and comment!!!🤘🏼😎🤘🏼

Anyone here know what is truly ironic about the choir teacher story? Geoff Tate IS a baritone vocalist. Great video. However I strongly feel that Geoff went into falsetto much less frequently than you claim he did, and that you have developed the mindset that he MUST have been doing the songs in that way because that is what you had to do to reach those vocal tones. I am not saying I'm all that, but I can sing "Eyes of a Stranger" without falsetto, and if I can, I know he did. No training, just 40 years of blowing my cords, letting them heal and repeating the process until I could do it without blowing my cords. G'day mate!!!!!
@RockYourBestVocals
@RockYourBestVocals 2 года назад
Hey Andrew, I totally resonate with your story of singing so long (I'm singing for about 38years, most of that professionally) and blowing my voice several times before learning how to avoid the strain and damage - which is why I became a 'coach' so I can help others learn how to avoid the same pitfalls that I've overcome along the way
@the-dave-house-project
@the-dave-house-project Год назад
I'm 47 and I can also do eyes of a stranger without falsetto. Honestly, I can't think of a single case where Tate has ever used falsetto because he just doesn't need to. He uses head voice, but the technique behind it is nothing like falsetto even though the two are often confused.

try doing a sigh - falsetto is really breathy... I think I should have said that Geoff uses "Headvoice" but I didn't really understand the terms as much back then... I was not trained in the academia/terms, so I was winging it - apologies! I know way more about the terms now, but I sang 30years professionally without knowing the 'proper' terms - go figure! I just did it... blissfully ignorant

@RockYourBestVocals 2 года назад
Hey Andrew, totally appreciate that and you'll see from my other videos that I know I can sing up to at least E5 in full chest: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-fxcCRUxvvwI.html The point in this video is that Geoff is singing in a 'falsetto' tone (in my opinion!)... (while I don't really agree with the terms because I normally use what's called 'one register' singing, such as Pavoratti, Caruso, Domingo which allows whatever 'power' you choose based on an operatic technique known as appoggio)
@the-dave-house-project
@the-dave-house-project Год назад
@@RockYourBestVocals Geoff is using head voice, not falsetto. The difference is that, while using head voice, vocal chords remain in full contact with each other while you're singing. While using falsetto, the vocal chords are not touching but close enough to vibrate against each other. The result of this is a weak, breathy, sound... and I think we can all agree that Geoff Tate just doesn't sound like that.
