I was into them in the 80’s, they were really popular and even had their songs played on radio stations. Concert attendances were large. I think you might have forgotten how popular they were.
@@alexojeda9048 He probably means because they were never big in America, and that's the place all bands measure success by. Despite those sales figures (which i find surprising they sold that much actually) they were never a household name here, just a cult following. Personally i found them cheesy and pretentious, they tried way too hard to be like a Pink Floyd type of thing but it came off like a parody.
@FatalPies I love both of them. Transcendence is such a great album. But really you can't compare them. Midnight was a light tenor when Geoff is a baritone singing in a high mix. Add James Labrie in his prime and you have my top three singers--and bands. Though John Arch is a close fourth.
I think Nirvana and Neil Young will have something to say about the greatest Unplugged session. Not that it matters much. It's not a competition - it's just great music.
@@bryanwhite5766 I never really gave much thought to Metallica. I was surprised that he basically doesn't want any of the members doing outside projects and has actively tanked such projects - seems sus to me. But hey, I don't know the guy.
@@dawnboren594 same here. I was into thrash metal and still am. I was also into the poppier stuff. Poison, Motley, Slaughter, Skid Row... Queensryche was the only none thrash metal band that remained relevant to me when I grew out of that scene. They are basically that link between progressive rock of the 60s and 70s and into the 80s and the progressive metal of today. At least that's how I see it.
This is before autotune, kids. He's doing it for real with no edits or other bullshit. He's absolutely at the top of his and everyone else's game here. I mean, he's still doing OK now for being 60 but this is just transcendent.
Geoff in his prime was unmatched and people forget how great the other band members were...Chris was incredible on guitar and Scott was so undervalued as a drummer. Ryche n Roll as we used to say...
@FatalPies to each his own my friend. Geoff sold himself out early with his voice so that the band could succeed. But to him, it well worth it and I applaud him for doing so.
"Rage For Order" is such an underappreciated album. I think it was way ahead of it's time and has so many great songs as well as some of Geoff's best vocals. I mean, the guy is a natural baritone (like me) but can sing waaaaaay up there (unlike me). ;-) Cheers.
It's a bit meh to say that their early stuff was the best, but I have to say that I prefer Queensryche's stuff before the concept albums. The EP, Warning and Rage are all just classics
Beth, I swear you needed to see him live with queensryche. Late 80s and early 90s. Live, he is a God of vocal power. The band performed as clear as a cd
I saw Queensryche many times before the breakup and I will say, you are correct. However, I will add one critique from their live appearances. Their backup vocals were weak. I'm convinced that Tate did ALL the singing on the studio recordings.
@@GilaMonster971 Check this out, last year as a part of the latest Avantasia release. There are some live clips floating around RU-vid too --> ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-loKZyb0xOz0.html
@@GilaMonster971 He has worked more and more with Tobias Sammet and Avantasia over the last year and that has lead to him drastically improving his tone again. He still can't hit the higher notes but his mid and break range are strong and sound wonderful. I've seen him perform in the Zenith in Munich with Avantasia last December and he sounded amazing.
The first time I heard Queensryche was in '82 or '83. I loved the band but it was Tate's voice that really got me. His voice was so damn captivating. He just draws you in and you are mesmerized the whole time he is singing.
Man when that EP dropped it was mind blowing! I wore that cassette out, more than once. The “The Warning” came out and it was game over for me. Even my friends were like “Dude, enough already!”
Thank you for showcasing Geoff Tate in his prime. Queensryche was at the top of their game. I only wish operatic, classical heavy rock had survived. Wow
"Underrated" is correct here, Beth. I remember first hearing the opening bars of "Queen of the Reich" on a rock radio station late into the morning at a party at a friend's apartment-that amazing, epic, looooong introductory WAIL-and went: "Wait, is that some new Priest? It's gotta be! No, no it's not, it's very different . . . OMG OMG OMG, WHO IS THIIIIIIIIIIS???!!!!" I was very happy I glued my very-blazed ears to that boombox through several other songs (with more than a few other folk close by, doing the same) to finally discover who it was. So exciting! Much rewarded in years to come.
I still love their album Rage For Order of which this song is from. They didn't sound like anyone else at the time. You could not mistake them or his voice for anyone else. Nowadays though, it's hard to tell so many bands and singers apart. You should do more songs from Rage For Order.
Saw Geoff live with Avantasia last year & out of all the guest vocalist that night he got the biggest reaction as soon as Tobias annouced his name. His smile told the story, he was overwhelmed with love from the fans that night. The man is a brilliant singer & man what a performance he gave that night.
My favorite band through the mid 80's and 90's. Rage for Order is massively underestimated and Operation: Mindcrime was one of the best albums of the decade. Saw them at their first headlining gig in the UK, just incredible.
I think Tate is a Bari-Tenor. He has a unique, beautiful instrument with incredible range. Excellent restraint and artistry as well. This is a special, eclectic band.
my second year of college, I listened to the complete O:M album everyday, all the way through, at least once. It wasn't new, it'd been out for years, but during high school a friend turned me on to QR, and all their albums up to that point (Empire) were fantastic, but O:M just kept itching my brain. Musically I adored them... Geoff's voice, Chris' lyrics, and Chris n Michael's dueling (and duoing) guitars. I'd never known an act so complete since Prince, and the O:M album had a storyline that still resonated (and still does, today). It broke my heart when the original band split up for assorted reasons, because (as pointed out) they weren't well recognized. I was incredibly disappointed when silent lucidity lost to REM for Grammy's that year because QR so deserved the recognition... they were several sweet deft steps above other heavy metal and hard rock bands, their fans knew it, but more of the world needed to acknowledge it. I'm still heartened to come across the odd Rolling Stone listing that will mark QR or O:M or Geoff as one of the Best Of all Time, and can only hope each time they do, someone else gives them a try.
Not really true. Chris wrote most of Hear In The Now Frontier and it was easily their worst effort at the time. Chris came back for Tribe in 2003 and nothing special came out of those writing sessions either. The magic was gone. He knew it and went on to play for Jerry Cantrell and fly planes.
I don’t know how underrated Geoff was as a singer or Queensryche as a band. I believe they were just a musicians’s band. They were far too gifted and nuanced for the average fan to understand or appreciate. Those who played an instrument had them on Rushmore...where they belonged. It’s the ultimate compliment to them when someone says, “I just don’t get it.”
Thank you for recognizing Geoff Tate and Queensryche, I grew up with them and tried to get other to understand that this type of singing is so rare, so rare that it may never bee heard again in our lifetime. I take nothing away from all the great vocalist such as Freddie Mercury. Geoff had such a depth and richness with so much range that it is only today with technology and social media, people see what I saw 25 years ago.
While I absolutely love this song and this specific performance of it, I do believe that the song "The Killing Words" from this same 1992 MTV show would have been an even better choice to react to. It was the most emotionally charged song of the night.
My Mom (RIP beautiful soul) was absolutely in love with Geoff. Every time my brother and I would pop the Tokyo concert into the vcr my Mom would make sure that she was right there on the couch with us lol
One of my favorite singers he's amazing I'm glad you see just how great he is. Young kids these days don't appreciate vocals like his. My kids think that he's a terrible singer they obviously haven't heard real singers lol
I saw him sing Operation:Mindcrime in Portland last winter (2019), in a 700-person venue. He sang to the audience like it was an arena, and it was crazy because he was, like, eight feet from us. The guitar player looked right at me like “Holy s-t I’m playing Operation:Mindcrime onstage!” Dude’s enjoying the good life and Tate nailed the entire album. Chris DG’s highs are sadly missing but his voice is professional as it was when I saw them in 1991 and 2005. He still has that voice!
Stumbled across your site and your competition. You're the only credible expert out there. I don't even care about vocals but your presentation works - too well.
To hear this masterpiece is to stand in the middle of nowhere, on a subzero and still night, looking at the stars and understanding how far away they are.
been a Queensryche fan since the 80's, Geoff's vocals have always been underrated. got to see them live at one of the last shows they did together in a small club/venue, so awesome. glad you appreciate his voice
Yeah bro, I got called a boomer the other day and it hurt my ego for about a second. Most of the people on RU-vid aren't even old enough to remember the 90s let alone the 80s. I remember saving my pocket money to buy the latest cassette tape that came out. How things have changed.
We got to grow up listening to this music when it was fresh and new. Consider yourself lucky because there will never be another era like it for metal.
It's great to hear your insights on how one hits their notes. So many reaction vid are just "wow", or "cool" reactions. Which are fine. But to hear someone who can really get into the reaction with reasoning is really great. Tate's voice and this band had a decade of being untouchable. Love Queensryche. They're one of the best bands I've ever seen live.
Loved Queensryche....when I heard the Operation mindcrime album I was pleasantly floored by the depth and talent that they had. Geoff Tates voice has always been a high standard for any rock or metal vocalist. Great review
Great reaction. It's great to see you break down the amazing aspects of Geoff Tate's voice. I was a teen when Queensryche emerged from the Seattle area, and it seemed unreal that a band with that much talent could just pop out, fully formed.
I never thought that anyone would do a reaction to this song. It's on my all time fave Queensryche album and it always gave me the feeling of an outro from the album.
I believe Geoff Tate was coached vocally by the late Dr. David Kyle here in the Seattle area. A Bel Canto prodigy like many of the powerful voices from this region including the late Chris Cornell. Seattle was the place to be in the 90s!
Just watched an interview with Tate where he mentioned this. He claims to have taken about 6 lessons and then a few with the entire band a while later. Not a lot of actual training, which is probably even more impressive.
I was in junior high when this came on MTV. I was already a fan from mindcrime but this took it to another level. I distinctly remember being mesmerized.
Well, Geoff Tate is still going strong being a featured singer with Tobias Sammet's Avantasia with, "Alchemy". An awesome song! As is all of their songs.
Thank you so much for this reaction video, Beth. I really appreciate your work. Your knowledge and analysis. Geoff Tate is an amazing singer. One of the best singers in the rock and metal scene. Keep up the great work, Beth :-).
Beth every time I see you do a video like this, I feel such strong validation! So glad that truly knowledgeable, talented people like yourself recognize Geoff Tate's awesomeness, too!
gonçalo Baia possibly the most theatrical was Suite Sister Mary. There’s a live version out there in YT land. Simply amazing with Jeff’s backing harmonies
Not really. It's a lovely song but as far as a Tate standout and a song deserving of a vocal analysis - especially compared to many other better Tate performances - it's not all that. This is the popular pick...sorta like people going to Iron Man as a Sabbath must, when there are much better examples from the artist.
@@stevej.1428 beg to differ, it's from the album when his voice reached peak in maturity before he started to lose it and in the song he exibits not only great range, but great control as well and versatility, and a tone power he hadn't shown yet. In these older songs it's pretty much falsetto and head voice, with a few exceptions. Sure the high pitches are impressive, but his voice is so much more than that
Was lucky to discover Operation Mindcrime when I was 13. Hooked on it straight away. Still have the MTV unplugged VHS tape. Wish MTV would remaster and release all there Unplugged sessions as they deserve to be heard and seen forever.
Geoff Tate band coming to Corpus Christi, Texas Nov. or Dec. 2020. A show that mustn't be missed. I got to see Queensryche in concert in Corpus Christi, Texas in on their 1983 four song LP: Queen of the Reich, Night Rider, Blinded and The Lady Wore Black. Won two tickets to the show on a local radio station. Great show. A great reaction/analysis on Geoff Tate's vocals Beth. RRROOAARR!
I've been lucky to see Queensrÿche live. It was at Sweden Rock Festival on the big stage. Was awesome! For a singer that sounds similar you can check out Fates Warning. I'd recommend the song Monument.
Everyone automatically jumps to Operation Mindcrime as Queensyche's song writing and recording pinnacle, which is fair, but as far as Tate's vocals are concerned, Rage For Order was his. His range was never better and his ability to emote from softer subtle to scream at the drop of a pin and without a hint of slide that even the best vocalists will use to hit notes properly and on key no matter where it was is unparalleled on RFO.
I totally get how she tears up at the end. Music constantly moves me to tears because it means so much sometimes and speaks to core of our soul and Geoff Tate’s voice is absolutely soul piercing...
This was by far the best Unplugged episode I ever saw. Back in the summer of 1986 I was reading an interview with Ozzy and the question was asked, "Hey Ozzy, what are you listening to these days?" Ozzy said, "Queensryche, Rage For Order" (I will Remember is track 11) So I immediately went and bought the cd. It is rare that you find an album of songs where every song is exceptional. Rage For Order is exceptional x 10.
