Def Leppard’s first hit “Photograph” had the band worried about the song having the same name as Ringo Starr’s 1973 hit but producer Mutt Lange didn’t think anyone would notice.
What other well-known songs can you think of that shared the same name but were completely different tunes? Share with me in the comments?
In this video I’ll be demonstrating how to sing like Joe Elliott as I teach you how to get that sound safely without pinching and squeezing in the throat.
I’ll explain how we can use good open throat technique to then be able to lean into the sound and get that distortion and gritty sound like Joe.

Joe Elliott has one of those voices that you know it’s him when he’s singing. Very distinct and back in the day, his range was outrageous. He could sound haunting in one verse than belt those high notes in the next. Def my fav singer

Def Leppard is my all time favorite band. I suggest listening to their self titled album. Joe does some great singing. The band has also stated that they now work with a vocal coach that Vivian introduced them to when he joined.

What he means is that Paul sings melodies that work well even without the music (so he’s a melodic singer) while Joe does a lot ad-lib stuff and “outbursts”… and that’s why Joe warms up the way he does… so he didn’t mean to compare their actual singing, just making a point and trying to explain that. 😊

Very interesting vocal analysis. Joe is certainly not a technically pure singer, but as noted by others, his sound is signature for DL's music, and also well-complimented by the group's focus on multi-part harmonies. On a related note, from footage I have seen from the 2022 stadium tour and also their Whisky-a-Go-Go show, Joe is actually sounding the best I have heard him in maybe 20 years. Perhaps he has engaged a good vocal coach such as yourself.

One of the top rock bands of the 1980's. Signature voice and sound trumps technique if the world wants to hear it. Most famous singers, at least in their beginnings, I suspect had very little vocal training, which is what allowed them to develop a signature sound. A trained voice can win a marathon, but uniqueness and creativity can lead to stardom if that is what a singer wants. Heard a video of Shania Twain singing the national anthem before she was famous and found her signature sound. Did not really sound that much like her, but she eventually found her unique style and the rest is history. I would never bash getting good vocal training, but don't lose the uniqueness in your personal style of singing just to "sing right". Having said that, you still rock Ken. Thanks for all the great tutorials.

People really underestimate DL’s backing vocals. They became better vocally with Vivian Campbell-that’s why he was selected over a hundred other great guitarists. Steve Clark had incredible riffs, but wasn’t really a singer. Those aren’t backing tracks live. Sure, there’s obvious drum/vocal loops on rocket and stuff, but those aren’t singing parts as much as they are production parts. It’s very well known that rick savage and Vivian Campbell are excellent singers. Check out the cruise on the high seas they did where joe Elliot lost his voice, and Vivian Campbell stepped up to sing hysteria. These guys are underrated musicians because of a couple cheesy songs. Joes best vocals are on Too late for love Love bites Bringing on the heartbreak Blood runs cold

Joe Elliotts lead vocals are the only thing that could perfectly front the Def Leppard sound. Not super technical, but powerful and fitting like a bolt of lightning or a sonic roar.. God bless Mutt Lange and Def Leppard. Thanks Ken! Hes one of the few singers I give a pass for on not sounding the way he used to.. but for a guy who basically screamed for 200 shows every 3 years since 1981, gotta cut him some slack. At least he matches the harmonies in the songs!

Love Def Leppard. I saw Def Leppard in concert in 2002, and saw them again in 2018, when Journey opened up for them. Those concerts were epic and awesome!! I sang "Rock Of Ages" "Pour Some Sugar On Me" and "Bringing On The Heartbreak" at karaoke. Those songs are fun to sing and they ROCK!!🤘🎸🎶🎵

I love breakdown you do! I also like how you demonstrate how to sing it, but to sing it WITHOUT straining or hurting yourself! I would suggest to keep with the 1980’s singer’s theme to demonstrate Jon Bon Jovi or Bret Michaels. Thanks for the great content!

i love that you are able to get that similar distorted tone of Joe but also more chest, more thickness. way to go as usual!!! Everytime you go into the intro about voice teachers who cant sing....it just makes me laugh that only in 2021 is it possible for someone to do nothing and talk about it and still make money. God help us. Keep singing and teaching. PS: Can you do a video request for me? Can you talk about hitting high c from a bel canto perspective and how that might differ from a distorted rock tone or the airy Steve perry sound? Like a 3 way vocal production comparison. Yes agreed ken, your student does have that axel rose sound, i use that format for shook me all night long and it seems to work me. Still learning tho. Myself, i have a little voice, in production with a little reverb it makes you feel like your superman sometimes lol. Btw, great shirt! 👍

I was at that Monsters of Rock festival in Germany. It was a hell of a concert, I remember seeing Jon Bon Jovi climbing the stage structure to the top and sang up there without a harness.

You did pretty good. Tough act to follow. It’s always something funny to me about the song. Pour some Sugar on me. It sounds like he’s saying red iPhone. I know it’s radar phone but when Joe Elliott sings it, it sounds like red iPhone. So Joe Elliott had a premonition, but didn’t LoL.

Ok Ken awesome job! As far as Joe Elliott being underated ? He is easily one of The best Rock Singers in history! After a few intro guitar riffs. Joe Elliot breaks loose with one of the hottest, rock your face off vocal riffs ever. Ok singers, Ken, sing "Rock of ages" or anything the rocks with that vocal intensity. Like I said, one of the greatest rock singers in history... Awesome video Ken.

From Germany, excuse my english! If, and if, Joe would have sang like you do the song so superb, do you think it would have had an influence like it had? Many singers have and had their own kind of voice with no chance of having a voice teacher like you. And espeacially Joe, can do to this day some real good work with his voice in live concerts. Would he do it like you, maybe he could go on another 20 years, but it is this special kind of voice someone loves. And I love your kind of DIO voice a lot, so go on for another 50 years, please! Kind regards from a drummer (not singing and 52 years old) from Germany! Stay cool, stay healthy and bring more fun about music!

Ken, being a Great rock guitarist & vocalist, how did u not hear DL until "Photogragh" ? Same age & "Wasted" was 1of the 1st songs I taught myself on guitar when it came out. Who were your influences circa, say 1970 -80 ? Joe is unique, more like Joe Cocker vs a true crooner. But so often is the fingerprint that sets a band apart. Imagine 1975 Aerosmith fronted by Barry Manilow 😳😱😎🤣 - PS : Another GREAT Breakdown btw, Thanks for these they are Unparalled anywhere 👍✌ !!!

Joe was a lackluster singer in my opinion until he teamed up with Mutt for High and Dry. Mutt had just done AC/DC's BIB. High and Dry seems to have been stamped with the same dye as BIB, i.e., vocals, riffs and all. Not that I dislike High and Dry...

Joes voice has been born out of the area that he was from. He sings with an accent. Im just not convinced that your voice sounds like Joe's quite yet.
