In 3 part harmony, I've always interpreted the highest line as the melody. Beautiful as TYC is, I could never tell. With this guide, I now dub TYC as upside-down 3 part harmony. According to this guide, the lowest line is the lead vocal (melody) and the highest line, which I always thought was the melody (in the chorus to each verse), is the second harmony! It's a first cousin to a barber shop quartet, (1st & 2nd tenor, baritone, bass) where the 2nd tenor, not the first, has the melody.
In this song, in the second verse you can hear that it's the lowest voice that continues the lyrics, and the two other voices have another melody. That was the main reason to interpret it this way.

This is a great thing having the harmonies broken out this way. I often get stuck doing the 3rd harmony and can't find it.. Wish many more songs would be broken down this way. Thanks!!! a bunch

Wondefull, wonderfull. As a Chorteacher I can sing all three singers! My Problem > it is too high for me. I have it sing in C-Dur ore Bb-Dur. I use the Capella Software, and I can transpose Scores. Can I download your Scores???? Thanks and musician greatings Peter Bengelmann

Can't that third harmony voice decide whether to sing - "their parent's" or "their children's" hell correctly? It's not very harmonious if the three voices cannot agree on the lyrics.
