How To Skagit Cast and Basic Tips for Skagit Casting and Trout Spey Casting. In this video, we discuss 7 tips for Skagit Casting, PLUS a big Dolly Varden at the end! www.cooperlandingfishingguide...

Cooper Landing Fishing Guide, LLC is located in Cooper Landing Alaska and we are certified Kenai River Fishing Guides on the Kenai and Kasilof Rivers fishing for both trout and salmon.
Kenai River Spey Fishing is increasing in popularity and proven to be a very fun way to enjoy fishing on this mighty river. Not only can an angler target Rainbow Trout with Skagit Casting on the Kenai River, anglers can also target Dolly Varden, Sockeye Salmon, King Salmon, Coho (Silver) Salmon and the occasional Steelhead.
Learning how to skagit cast can be intimidating. With so many casts out there and so many different "schools of thought" on the various spey casting techniques, it can be a confusing journey. Guiding hundreds of clients a year in skagit casting has led to a more simple way to cast and approach spey casting on spey and switch rods.
Thank you so much for your support!

good video. Not many talk about the need to change the cast depending on whether the wind is up or down stream. So, all things being equal, in a downstream wind I'd do a double spey casting from my downstream side and with an upstream wind, a snap-C casting from my upstream side?
@CooperLandingFishingGuide
@CooperLandingFishingGuide 3 года назад
Essentially, if you are on river left you'd cast off your left side with a downstream wind and with an upstream wind, you'd cast off of your right side. On river right, you'd cast off your right shoulder with a downstream wind and off of your left shoulder with an upstream wind. I hope this helps! Thank you so much for watching!

@CooperLandingFishingGuide
@CooperLandingFishingGuide 5 лет назад
Thank you so much for checking out our videos Alfie! It really means a lot :) There are a couple of fixes that might help you for sure - Usually I will leave about 2 ft of overhang for my shooting/running line off the tip of my rod. Basically lower your shooting head about 2 ft from the rod tip. That really helps a lot. Another thing that helps is starting out like you're going 5mph with your cast and then accelerate when you reach the 180 degree mark and that should keep your anchor from going too far upstream or downstream in your sweep, causing it to blow. I hope this helps!

I do not own a spey rod, yet, but I'm guessing I can make these same casts with a switch rod, which I have ?? Are the casts easier standing in the water, or from a drift boat ? During salmon & steelhead season I am fishing from my Hyde. I typically strip the line back until just the head is in the water, pick it up & basically do an overhead cast with both hands on the rod. Thanks for all your videos & keep them coming !! It is on my Bucket List to make it to where you are located some day.
@CooperLandingFishingGuide
@CooperLandingFishingGuide 4 года назад
Thank you for the kind words Dave! You can definitely do these same casts with a switch rod as well as a single hand rod. The casts tend to be easier in the water only because you don't have to account for the boat "being in the way" for casting, etc... if you've ever watched Skagit Masters with Tom Larimer, you can see excellent examples of spey fishing from a boat. Thank you again for watching!

Just curious as to your recommendation for a spey rod, that is affordable ? I own 5 fly rods from 4wt to my 8wt switch rod, one Sage, one Scott & three Mystic rods. What spey rod would you recommend ? I know guides, like yourself sometimes have opportunities to promote a particular rod company, but if you were not a guide, like me, what rod would you buy ? I have a small fly tying business that I do in my basement & have an opportunity to go to shows to show my creations & I have a FaceBook page & would love some feedback from you. Recently I have tied up a few of your creations, with my own different twist & would again like your opinion. Is there a way for me to send you a few pics ? Thanks again !! David M. With the Skagit head and a running line, do you start the cast with Skagit head few centimetres out of the top of the rod?
@CooperLandingFishingGuide
@CooperLandingFishingGuide 4 года назад
Thank you so much for watching and for your question! Generally speaking, you would want to perform skagit casts with at least a foot or so of running line out of the rod. There are some scenarios where you would want more "overhang" or even have the skagit head in the rod, but for the most part a foot or so of overhang will be a good thing for consistent casting :)

When you snake roll your skagit setup are you hesitating after the roll to plant an anchor or are you trying to “aerialize” the whole motion?
@CooperLandingFishingGuide
@CooperLandingFishingGuide 4 года назад
I am basically trying to aerialize it entirely but ensure that I have a solid anchor. I tend to think that I am going in slow motion so I dont blow an anchor. A good way to train for the snake roll is to draw a lower case e. When on the right side, the e will be normal and when on the left side of your body, the e will be backwards. Try to trace this shape of the e slowly and you'll get it :) Thank you so much for watching!

I still don't know what you were doing or how you did it. You talked about different cars but I could not tell what you were doing or figure out what you did. I've caught many fish on my fly rod, but never heard of "spey" or "skagit" and I still don't know what they are.

For some reason I cannot find this video maybe you know what im talking about. You posted a video where you HEAVILY EXAGGERATED the spey cast a while back, you just MUSCLED it and basically was trying to show a point. Which video is that!!!!?

@@CooperLandingFishingGuide Thank you SOOOOO MUCH I found it. Just wanted to post it on my page as a response to someone. I was on the river yesterday and saw exactly that. These people were literally breaking their flies off just MUSCLING it. Keep doing what youre doing thank you for all your videos. You make people like myself much better fishermen.

so much splattering and smacking the water. And so little drift. you drop your rod tip and you line lands before the fly. getting the line out in a straight line but at the cost of a terrible presentation, massive water disturbance and a short drift. it was unbearable to watch. my uncle would have made you walk home.
