Tom provides instruction lessons on how to choose between whether you should use a skagit vs scandi fly line in a given situation. He also talks about a 3rd line style, called a rage head line. This is one of many videos that form a great spey casting beginners how-to guide.

Best explanation of Spey, Skagit and Scandi I have come across by a master caster.

Well...In Scandinavia we don't put a sinktip at the end of the scandi lines. Just a leader and a fly. No wonder you can't make it work... Works very well with large flies. However, your trout flies are gigantic. They look like our pike flies... Scandi lines also work well in wind.

If you designed the Airflo Rage line congratulations. The best all round line I have used in the last 20 years and, in the UK at any rate, by far the best value.

Switched out my Skagit head for a Scandi for kicks and giggles. Casts like butter. The difference between casting Skagit and Scandi is comparable to the difference between spin casting a spoon and fly fishing a dry fly (overstating the point to make a point). Still need dirty ole Skagit for the big flies in turbulent water though.

I would like to purchase a spey or switch rod for the texas Surf, we have speckled trout, redfish, lady fish, flounder, spanish mackerel, bluefish, medium sized fish. What should I get at least? Would skagit work using 3-5 inch flies ? Thanks for the info now I know exactly what these lines are.

Can you explain all the Skagit shooting line colors and their purpose and which color lines are best in the water?? I never could understand the difference. Thank you!

Any differences in casting those lines? How about dangling length? If I bring the connection point (between head and running line) to the rod tip, it's not easy to put the anchor point in the right place since the head is rather long. Can anyone explain?

Wow, all those salmon I caught 25 years ago on a DT floating line must have been deluded lol. Sometimes change is good, but sometimes it's change for the sake of change and nothing else.

GRAIN WEIGHT >>>> You really need to match the grain weight of whatever line type You choose to Your rod - action/ rod weight. ....... EXAMPLE: a 450 grain Scandi on a light spey or even stout switch rod may overload Your rod and make it feel like Your hucking / casting USB computer cable lol ...........So not only the type of line Scandi vs Skagit but the weight of the type is very important........SCANDI >>>> Scandi line is NOT hard to throw once You have the weight and rod matched and You practice and practice and practice basic simple roll and / single Spey but it is just nar I say "harder" to throw with poor technique than a well balanced Skagit set up .....BEGINNERS >> Start with a Skagit properly balanced rod to line and get that down to 2nd nature then go to a Scandi that 'loads' Your rod enough ( leader - tippet included of course ) and enjoy the 'bliss' of Scandi .......single malt cheers

He'll have been about 10, 20 years ago! Don't think rage lines are even 10 years old? I used DT lines 20 plus years ago, and...call me old fashioned....I still think they are better....feels much nicer playing a fish with a 30 yard fly line rather than a braided running line on a shooting head.
