Advice for anyone concerned about falling over is to wear pads and a helmet. Coming from someone who snapped my wrist skating 6 months ago I now will not skate without my knee pads and wrist guards at the very least and if I'm trying something new I always wear my helmet. I can't explain how much more confident I feel wearing them. At first I didn't want to wear them because I thought I was going to look stupid but it wasn't until I snapped my wrist stepping onto concrete that I realised how much they can save you. Never again will I skate without my pads purely because of the confidence boost I get from wearing them. Hope this helps someone.
this actually made a lot of sense! A lot of other teachers explain the "feet in A shape, now step" and then "bubbles" but then never explain how to actually skate backwards lol
Yes exactly! I end up with bad / half bubbles backwards and never get further than that. This helped me at least get the logic of it, so thanks Estro Jen! 😊
quick timestamp key for myself and others, since i'm gonna be coming back to this video a *lot*. it's by far one of the most helpful backwards skating videos i've seen in a while :) 0:00 - intro & balance exercises 3:30 - foot positioning & pushing off 6:38 - turning 12:52 - (skates are now on) stepping backwards 13:33 - blowing bubbles 15:48 - actually skating backwards 19:25 - questions from the live chat 22:17 - forwards to backwards (& vice versa) transitions 25:30 - crossovers 31:22 - outro & more questions from the chat
You can truly tell how much love she has for skating and teaching other people how to skate and it’s incredible. Her energy helps me get pumped up and excited to learn.
@@estrojen8755 Me too! I haven't skated since high school in the 80's, but with social distancing this seems like a great time to get back into it. Seems like it's all girls, though... Your tutorials are really making me think I need to.
How do you overcome the fear of catching one of those little pebbles on the street or tripping over a crack in the cement? Especially backwards! I think it’s the “mental” part of it that hinders me sometimes
wrist guards + knee pads, stay low to the ground, and practice stopping on your toe stop when going backwards! if you fall, you fall forwards, so it's actually a lot easier to catch yourself. I feel you though, the mental part is really hard for me too!!
stagger your stance and lift the heels. Get really good at bubbles and then learn to push confidently because speed is your friend when trying to go smooth outdoors. (oh! and scan the ground for pebbles)
Miss Ana! Do you remember me, Jeanne?! You taught my son Jake preschool in Austin in 2009!!! I am skating now too! Wow, I hope we can reconnect!!! Instagram- shelikesskating
I don't know what I love more about this video - the detailed explanations of backwards skating, or the fact that even Estro Jen gets kicked out of public spaces too when skating.
That's exactly what I said!! My bf is sooooooo gooooood at skating backwards it looks like he is gliding. I asked him for tips but I am just not getting it! When she said that, like you said, it made something click in my brain!!
Thank you so much Estro. That was the best explanation of backward skating. I’m sure a lot more people will get it now. And thank you for all your hard work in bringing us all the moxi brand and skates. I love my Taffys. 💜
Thank you Estro Jen you're an amazing skater and a wonderful teacher and a special thank you to the cameraman Miguel. He follows you around so smoothly I often forget someone's filming this because I'm focusing on what you're saying so much
I know this is an older video, but I thought I would say that the explanations do help a lot. Like I can see how your supposed to move, but figuring out how to make my body do that just by watching someone else do it is not that easy for me. You do a great job of describing what is actually happening. I haven't been on skates since I was a teenager, I have some arriving this week. I can't wait to be comfortable enough just going forward to actually try going backwards. It will be amazing when I manage to be able to do something I always wanted to know how to do but never had anyone to show me when I was younger. I could move backwards but not really in a controlled way unless I had a friend to help direct me around the rink.
I'm so grateful to find your channel. I skated age 7 - 13 nearly 40 years ago and am excited and nervous to restart. I love your clear brilliant teaching.
This is the trick! New to skating and I haven't been able to figure out backwards skating and this made it crystal clear. Also helped me improve my bubble technique (I call them wobbles), Thank you so much for doing these videos
this video was so! helpful, im a 54 year old lover of skating havent skated for 30years and my teenage sons bought me moxi beach bunnies for mothers day, just got them this morning and have been skating the the past 2 hours and love them so much your so fun to watch thanks again for sharing your love of skating your energy is infectious hugs Diane Smith of Colorado
That was so informative. I really dig the roller blader/skater dynamic. We’re lucky to have one in our crew. It feels like comparing notes. To see how they take on something vs us. Miguel is a beast. When he bombed that hill backwards my heart dropped to my bootyhole. That speed was unreal.
Could you please do a video on making your skates work for you? Like lace patterns, the way they should fit, and the way you can adjust your skates to accommodate your body? I have a hard time with my toes and the bottoms of my feet going numb and feeling like their on fire and I'd like to find a way to help this.
I also experience numb or achy feet with my skates, and I've noticed that it usually radiates from my arches. My Lolly skates don't quite fit the arch of my foot, so I've cut up some cheap shoe inserts so that they fit just under my arch. That way the heels and toes still have "contact" with the skates. This has taken pressure off from my arches, and skating feels so much better! I also keep the laces loose around my mid foot, and tighter around my ankle. Making sure the ball of my foot is not pinched helps keep the numbess away. Also, soft wheels (78a) are a MUST for outdoor skating. I'm using the Moxi Gummy for distance, or the Radar Energy for agility. The vibrations from hard wheels on pavement can really rattle those nerves, and soft wheels are great shock absorbers for rough surfaces. Hope any of this can help :)
@@cynzyp5243 Same here. I ordered mine maybe 4 days ago. I know quarantine has made things hard, and I don't expect them soon but. Can you blame me for being super excited???
After practicing in my kitchen for about 15 minutes I got it!!! I've been trying to go backwards for like a week now haha, this is the first video that really helped. Thank you ❤❤❤
I’ve seen a lot of skating backwards tutorials and this is the best explanation and exaggeration of steps to make me understand (finally) the concept of backwards skating. It helped so now I have to build up the confidence to practice on the rink instead of skating backwards on my kitchen floor like nobody’s business 😂😂😅😅
This makes perfect sense! No one had ever explained it to me like this before and now I totally get it!!! Thank you so much. And I cannot wait for the bag to go on sale it’s awesome
This video helped me so much! I love what you explain things in different ways for different types of learning. Thank you for all you do! Your enthusiasm is infectious! 💜
You opened up a whole new world for me.. i love the lessons you put on youtube..keep it coming💜 it helps me alot! Not only with skating but also with confidence..xx
Estro you explain skills so well, with words and motion. I can feel the movement as I watch you. I cannot wait to get started I’m binging your vids ✌🏽💚
I have watched so many videos about backwards skating, and the leading with the butt was finally the thing that clicked for me! lol So stoked. Thank you!
Thank you thank you thank you!! Estro Jen, you are the reason I got into skating! I’m a total beginner but your videos are amazing- I love your explanations and you always give us each concept in multiple different ways so we can understand it from every angle. Plus just watching you is so inspiring! So thank you and I can’t wait to get on my skates!! ❤️🧡💛💚💙💜
Thank you Jen & Miguel! I’m just getting back to skating after too many years and I had completely forgotten how to skate backwards. This was everything I needed to refresh my memory and get me going backwards! So great! And I really love your energy! Thank you!!!
I have watched countless videos on skating backwards, but this is the one where it finally clicked! Thanks for explaining how to shift your weight to get that backwards momentum, none of the other videos I've watched explain that.
You're adorable as you explain all of this. Definitely learned a lot and am now experimenting with just minor different movements like this. Thanks a lot for sharing!
Ah, you two are awesome! Miguel, your video captures really help in my ah-ha moments. And Estro, placing the camera overhead was inspired. :) And your shoulder movement instructions help explain why my backward skating is a little ... slow going. Thank you. Thank you. My Fundaes arrived, time for another spin!
Thanks so much it’s been decades since I really skated and I couldn’t remember how to skate backwards. I have to practice, but your lesson has taught me how to do it again 🤗!! So happy. I borrowed my daughter’s skates. I’m waiting on my new Beach Bunnies to come when you start shipping in August.
Estro you have some amazing energy and talent towards teaching us green skaters. Also props to the camera man (I believe it's Miguel) for always keeping your full body in frame and making sure your mic is always on point. :)
That was so helpful I watched other videos and couldn't get it but watched this and got all of them in about the time you explained it you made it so easy!
Just watching this vid and your breakdown on how to actually skate backwards, im ready to try it out today! woo! here's to learning backwards skating ~
Thankyou! I've tried a few backwards skating techniques but the minute you said sway your hips and feel the weight of each move it just clicked..... You ROCK!
wow the knife cutting butter in a snake formation image is awesome for us kinaesthetic learners! Great detailed breakdown for the analytical minded people too, thanks alot.
Thank you! I am learning to skate and watched different people and Really like how you explains & show! I am subscribing and hoping to find more beginners skating info 😀
This is so so helpful. I found it hard to understand the mechanics of how to create momentum. The way you showed the push off made so much sense. Thank you!
