Thanks! so interesting. As a woman travelling alone and sleeping in the back of my car, I always made sure that I positioned the driver's seat to enable me to quickly jump in it and drive away. Yes, the key is left in the ignition, and all doors are locked, one window opened just a crack for fresh air. It happened a few times that I had to do this quick drive away in situations that looked like danger was coming. Always park your car in a way to be able to quickly drive away forward.

Even a guy traveling alone does this. I am currently sleeping in my car for a 6 week work contract (3 weeks in already) and I must admit I use the same idea of keeping the car ready to be driven. However I try not to keep the key on display in the ignition. All because I'm too cheap to fork out on hotels but it is comfortably easily done.

Been living in my Tahoe full time for a few months now. I never wanted to admit it was a permanent (for the foreseeable future) arrangement so I neglected to come on RU-vid looking for advice. This is a great channel for anyone starting out that hasn't found their ideal setup just yet or even if youre a CARmping veteran, theres some great ideas you may not have thought about yet. For me, I realized the most important thing about carmping is comfortable sleep. Stoves and storage and all that should be built around your most comfortable sleeping area not the other way around. Never sacrifice stretching out completely at night, for example, because your mini fridge setup is in the way of your legs. I took the back seats out of my Tahoe and it made a huge space that it just so happens a full size mattress fits in like a glove. it's almost like the engineers measured the interior dimensions based on this mattress size, its that perfect of a fit. Because of this I was able to build a custom frame out of PVC pipe to support and level the bed, bought some new hotel style sheets and plush pillows at Walmart for under $100 and it's like sleeping at home back there. My daughter and I were homeless and slept in my car. It was a 1986 corolla. The space in the back seat is taken up with supplies and the trunk is taken up with supplies. We found the best way to sleep was in our front seats. We layed the front seats back as far as they would go and wrap a blanket around ourselves. No need for mattresses, this is a luxury and not necessary as all your space in the car is taken.. Blankets are a must, we each had 3 heavy blankets as winters get below -30C in Canada and winds easily reach over 80KM/hr so it gets very cold. Just a tip, socks, wear a lot of them and wool. Wool gets wet it get heavy but is keeps the heat, so get the old fashioned type of wool, not the marina wool or similar crap, they will not keep your toes from freezing into frost bite. Problem with vehicles is they are NOT insulated. When it's cold outside it's freezing inside. If you can afford to before hitting homeless is to purchase some insulation foam and cut and install under the carpet of your car. All the way up to the under dash area. This helps a lot.

I am sure that they punctured it thinking there was drugs inside of it so they were trying to see if it was really full of air or not and then just didn’t tell you that they did that. They are complete assholes at the border. I live in Minnesota and went up to the Winnipeg folk festival with my kids. I had a signed document from my ex-husband that I had permission to take them up to Canada to this festival it was notarized I had a copy of our divorce certificate that show that I was the custodial parent. I did everything absolutely according to their guidelines that they had posted online for bringing your kids across the border on a vacation. They still searched my entire car and were very messy about it even though I had two little kids with me and obviously I wasn’t smuggling drugs. Then they insisted on calling my ex-husband to verify that he actually signed the documents and knew that the kids were going with me even though it was notarized. So the first time they called nobody answered and they got an answering machine. We waited 20 more minutes and then they called again and he didn’t answer again. They were so snotty to us and said well you’re just gonna have to stay here until we get a hold of them even though it wasn’t necessary. When they finally got a hold of him my ex was actually mad at them because he said she did everything she was supposed to there is nothing anywhere that you have to verbally verify and why would you it was notarized I have to show my ID when I sign it to the notary. Of course I know that they’re up there and of course I gave permission because you have the signed document plus she has custodial rights so what does it matter she can bring the kids anywhere she wants but she followed your rules and got a signed document from me and I told her it was overdoing it and still you guys make them wait and call me even though it isn’t even necessary. Yeah they were like just trying to find something to do for themselves or just wanting to be assholes to a single mom with two little kids just wanting to go to a fall concert.

This is very informative. I have a very old Rav4L, and I found that if I take the passenger seat headrest off and push the seat as far forward as possible, when I lower the seat back, it links with the rear passenger seat. Then the rear passenger seat can be pushed down nearly flat (but still there is space under it for storage). It makes a very long narrow bed, someone who is over 6'6" can sleep there! I've only slept on it for napping, but I do want to try a road trip and sleep in my car for a few nights in a row, so the idea of some sort of mattress to even out the seats is appealing. The same can be done for driver's side, so 2 people can sleep. I also have a hitch and cargo carrier with cargo cover, so I can store stuff in there and free up a lot of space inside the car cabin. I am heartened when I watch RU-vids like this, that my yearning to do a road trip and sleep in my car isn't too weird a concept.

regarding the patch kit with “plastic stick”: i have rolled patch around stick, use stick to insert patch through hole, discard stick, then remove backing from patch or squeeze adhesive into hole onto patch, carefully maneuver patch into place and inflate partially or fully immediately, the air creates a space so you dont glue mattress together and it presses patch into hole sealing. i hope this helps.

Wal-Mart sells inexspensive foam mattress toppers. For a twin size you can fold it in half and double the depth. I actually have been sleeping on a twin size air mattress for several years. I use the eggcrate topper under my sheets so it is very comfortable. I bought a Fixer upper house 7 yrs ago and refuse to buy furniture while I have to prep and paint. So I don't have heavy things to move around while working. I have no friends or visitors so living comfortably with very little furniture has worked well for me, I plan on traveling across country later this year and set up a site on my own acreage in the mountains. I guess you could call this situation Basic Prepper Training for successful transitioning to living in a tiny off grid home I will buy there.☺Maybe I will offer overnight or extended camping areas for travelers visiting the area. Not sure yet though because camping fires could pose a serious risk. Take care and thanks for your how to presentations👍☕🇺🇸

If I pad areas like my knee and support my lower back, and typically add something for a footrest, I can easily sleep in the front seat. I slept 5 days in the back seat of my rental car at the 2024 RTR. In 2010, I also slept in the backseat of a rental car when I stayed at the Grand Canyon National park. I have a back seat mattress similar to yours and I love it. It is so comfortable, easy to blow up with the little machine and it holds the air forever. I have no problem sleeping in my car and actually feel quite safe. I do cover the windows so I have privacy and keep one window just cracked open. I keep my key in the ignition and drivers seat in it's usual position so I can quickly climb into the seat if needed to drive away but, haven't needed it yet. While I have a comfortable Luggable Lu, for night time I use a pee bottle so I don't have to go outside.

I road trip in my hatchback, and I use the backseat mattress for my dogs while we are on the road, then put the dogs in the front seat so I can sleep in the back ... tip: crib sheets fit perfectly on the mattress, I use two, top one for the dogs, then take it off to sleep on bottom one, and put it back on for dogs after I get up. Also, I have a pop-up tent (3 second set up, 3 minute take down) for times there’s a safe place to boondock, and I just pull the mattress out and throw it into the tent for roomier sleeping 😊

I drive a Lexus and have slept like a baby in my passenger seat. I put a folded blanket from the top of the head rest down to the bottom of the seat, then tied the top of a sheet around the headrest so it wouldn't slip around n tucked it nicely around the entire seat.( This added a nice level of comfort, plus protects the leather seats) My seats can just about fully extend into a flat position, added a pillow n covered up with a soft blanket and i can sleep really well...actually better than in a regular bed! Also helps that I'm 5'2" 😊

Your supposed to get a tool that looks like a field goal post "fork" place the stick in between the post and shove it into the hole half way, then carefully pull the tool out without pulling the adhesive stick out. Whatever part of the stick is sticking out, clip it off then add adhesive around and over the stick surface then you add the patch on top. The stick will naturally go over the hole just like tight jeans on a person "muffin top" so that prevents air from escaping. If I don't came sense watch how to repair tires sidewall, it's the same idea. Hope this helps someone out there..

Just for future reference. If the back seat is too tight to get comfortable, try taking some luggage and putting it in the front foot area on the passenger seat. Then slide your seat as far as it can go towards the front window then lower the back rest as far as it can go. then use blankets, pillows, clothes or foam to build up the foot area to be level with your seat. Use your pillows on the glove compartment and kick your feet over the back rest. You can actually set this up quite comfortable for sleeping fully stretched out. I would also use padding under my bum to get that curve out as well. I am a side sleeper as well and I find this to be one of the best sleeping options in a pinch.

I'd try to get the patch on the inside, either through the inflation hole or through the widened hole. Roll the patch up get it inside, unroll it, and get the glue on it through the hole. That way the air pressure would work to seal the hole instead of trying to leak.

good video. (a) you can also try to push forward and down on the passenger seat as much as possible, and lean the driver seat tilted backward as much as possible, creating the biggest gap you can to stick your legs out from the backseat where your upper body would be resting on, and with your raised air bed and some pillow padding you may be able to put your legs through the big gap and keep your legs straight as you wish. ( b) try putting a towel over your eyes to block out any light ( or also partially covering your face so people do not see a single female sleeping alone in the car, for security reason )

You do well with a sedan! And then there's me traveling with my two 60# plus dogs in an Outback wagon.... Both rear seats are laid down and I have a 1" foam pad for the -entire- back area as a comfort base. I end up using the front passenger area for storage, putting all the coolers and "goods" in the seat and foot-well. I usually use the rear foot-well and the space between the front seat back & rear headrests for additional belongings. - - - At night, the dogs get the sides, I get the middle, and all of us sleep fully stretched out. I use a square bottomed sleeping bag for comfort with sheet insert [not mummy or cocoon] and/or my hand-made Irish knit wool afghan for warmth. The pillow even extends up between the seats, resting on the center console. I crack windows and run two small [3"±] USB powered fans connected to a solar power pack for circulation. - - - In winter, I have a trucker's electric space heater [6"±] for chill reduction. The dogs have sleeping bag/comforters and my afghan goes inside the sleeping bag. No, there is not real heat, but we are not cold either! Nitey-nite.

The MOST IMPORTANT THING you must do when car stealth sleeping/camping/living is to cover your windows completely. If you are detected it could cause you much trouble and $$. Some states give you a ticket for sleeping in your car cuz' it's illegal. You can use the mylar covered bubble wrap cut to your window size + a bit more to be tight, but they take up so much room to store in your car and you have to paint one side black. The best way is to hang curtain type coverings on the inside of your car made from thick fabric, fleece or black out curtains folded for double thickness, works great. You can hang using many methods, thin wire, velcro, tape etc. Be sure the bottom of the curtain is secure so nobody can see in. You tube has many videos of how people live in their cars and are not detected, even in a crowded place.

I was homeless for 2 months in 2011, living in my 2005 Chevy Trailblazer along with my 4 dogs. In the Houston summer. 🥵 We survived; if it got too hot I would start the car and turn on the AC for a bit. It was harder on my dogs than me, I think. I slept with the backseat laid flat but there was still a small hump. I bought a folding exercise mat made of firm foam with a vinyl cover. It mostly leveled out the hump. I added a baby mattress and sheet. It was super cozy. I’m 5’8” so my legs went over the edge of the mattress but I mostly sleep on my side in the fetal position and there was plenty of space to extend fully if I needed to stretch my legs. I must admit, I still longed for that cozy sleeping experience after I re-homed, I think, because it represented a time when I learned to be self sufficient while keeping my little family together. I was / am proud of myself for accomplishing that. I was pretty messed up mentally then with untreated bipolar disorder. An air mattress never crossed my mind. I now sleep in a twin bed, and still find a smaller bed comforting. Watching this video brings back a lot of memories, good and bad.

This was an informative video, especially the part on how to plug the mattress hole. However, as a CUV owner and being 5'4-5'5 in stocking feet, I would find a sedan less comfy than a CUV or wagon. i am wondering if it would make sense to cut a small slit in the air mattress and find an old memory foam mattress and/or shipping popcorn and fill the air mattress with small pieces of memory foam. The reason I am thinking to do that.. it would put less pressure on the plastic to hold air and perhaps even it could provide support without any air at all. And the nice thing about memory foam is it can be compressed quite a bit for saving space. And for the slit .. it could probably be easily sealed with some gorilla tape? And if the air mattress is not holding air under pressure anymore.. it would not be as much of an issue to make it air-tight?

I've already posted this on a couple of channels so I'm a little embarrassed to do it again. But I kept reading all the geat comments and this hadnt been mentioned. In my CRV I folded down the back seats, bought a Coleman ComfortSmart Camping Cot that comes with a mattress on Amazon. It arrived in a 2 piece box which was fabulous to use as storage under the cot in my car. I esp wanted something that was elevated a little for air circulation underneath, this is 15". I layed the front passenger seat back until it supported the head end of the cot so everything was level. Very comfortable. It's off the floor of the car so the cold air wasn't sucked up by contact with the mattress. Mattress and cot all synthetic material and my sheets and blankets, so no worries about being cold if it's hot and you sweat. Cotton will hold the sweat and you'll be cold. The 2 box pieces are sturdy but I used packing tape to reenforce sides, bottom then covered the sides with contact paper. I'm going to remove the front passenger seat to have more room for things I need and stack things under the head to keep it level.
