My leg bin burning for 20 years. I watch 3 videos and save the links to I can refresh myself. I woke up this morning without the burning. Also I wear suspenders rather that a waist belt also helped. Thanks you
Doc, You’re amazing! I had excruciating stabbing pain with numbness down my thigh that continued everyday for months. I did your exercises when I felt it flaring up. After approx 4 weeks I have only had a few flare ups that were easily relieved by exercise. Thank you so much and now I can sleep :-)
*That's so great to hear!* The power of exercise in recovering from a condition or injury is huge. Thanks for sharing your experience and for checking out our channel!
Hey! I can't give you specific advise since you're not a patient. Typically what works for my patients is progressively getting back into modified workouts as their symptoms regress. Well wishes!
Wow! This information is amazing! I have meralgia paresthetica on both thighs and some of the suggestions he made (with the exception of the pillows) have actually worked for me in the past. Using pillows for better sleep is new for me -- going to try it! Thank you for this very informative video!
I’ve just been diagnosed with this condition. I have excruciating stabbing pain in the top of my left leg. A bit of pain in the groin, too, like another viewer said she has. No numbness. No back pain. I’m a side sleeper and used this video to confirm I should sleep on my right side.
Weirdly, when I sleep on the right (it's my left leg as well), it gets worse. I've dealt with this for 15 years, but only when I was laying on my back. For 2 months now, since I've lost a lot of weight, thanks to gastritis, it's gotten way worse. Now if I sit, lay no matter if side or back, or even walk... 😔
Thank you VERY much for this. My problem was actually misdiagnosed twice. First, as a yeast infection. But a dermatologist nixed this. And next as a bursitis. But it is clearly not that either. It has been SO frustrating. After researching it, the symptoms seem EXACTLY like Meralgia Paresthetica as far as pain/burning and the area involved - especially during sleep. And the cause as well. I will try some of the things you suggest (just ordered some Biofreeze, for example). And I greatly appreciate you making these videos. ☮
Little things like sleeping in the right positions can make a huge difference. Make sure you have a chiropractor that spends time with you and gets you on a home exercise/rehab program vs just a quick adjustment! Thanks for watching!
Thank you your advice makes sense. My Gp referred me to a Physiotherapist who staight away diagnosed me with MP. I have it in both legs worse at night. I am going to try all your exercises. I am due to go on holiday in 2 weeks and I am dreading the long walks in the airport. Will walking make it worse. I have avoided walking for the past 2 months pretty much become housebound spending most of my time in bed. My friend is getting annoyed with me, she is very active as I used to be. Regards Heather
Thank you so much for this too! I have been relieved of the pain and finally have slept well because of the exercises you taught in another video. You are a life-saver! Thanks be to God! 🙏😇
I'm really glad to hear that. It's a testament to how exercise and rehab can play a key part in relieving many common conditions of muscles, joints, and nerves! Thanks for watching!
I am having a lot of pain on my right side since last few weeks and this video helped me sleep comfortable last night. I tried lot of leg exercises but I think I am ding couple of wrong ones that is still aggravating the nerve pinch. I will only do the exercises you recommended in the other video.
I think sleeping with the pillow under my legs has helped quell the nerve pain when sleeping on my back. Thank you, i’m starting to worry about this condition, but since putting the pillow under my legs I haven’t awoke with my thigh burning.
Glad to hear it has helped you. Feel free to read some of my content on this condition that covers other things you can do as well as treatment options. Thanks for watching!
@@JasonWilliamsDC-Chiro-Rehab Thank you. I had a pretty rough week with the nerve pain but since watching your videos doing some of the exercises and changing my sleeping position it has gotten better thank god. I’m so glad the internet exists so I can find videos like this
Hi, Jason. You're such a life saver. I'm not sure if you respond to questions, but hoping that you will, I have some questions. First of all, I would be grateful if you could help me understand how meralgia paresthetica started for me. Due to my job, I'm not very active; I spend almost the entire day in a reclining chair, half-lying on my upper hips, leaning my back on a pillow, tracking data on a large screen. For about 3-4 years, there have been sporadic symptoms of piriformis syndrome. Initially, I thought it might be a herniated disc, though I'm still not sure. The piriformis muscle caused pain and tension in my hips, but this occurred almost once every 4-5 months. And two weeks ago, for the first time, the symptoms of meralgia paresthetica started with a slight upward tingling and numbness from the right outer side of my knee. As of now, the effects are diminishing, not as intense as the first day, with a little sensation lost on the right outer side of the knee, but I'm trying to understand the cause and what it is. How accurate could my own conclusions be, or not, so I'm still trying to determine what the problem is; I can't even be sure if it might be due to compression related to prolonged sitting. I also want to ask this because I need this detail to understand what it is as well; Is meralgia paresthetica something that could result from force during sexual intercourse or masturbation? Most importantly, what is the way to differentiate all of these from a herniated disc? What should be present for me to say that it is indeed meralgia paresthetica, and how can I distinguish it? Is it a condition that passes? Your insights are crucial for me. I would be very pleased if you could respond. Thank you.
Thanks for reaching out and I wish you the best. I'm sorry I can't answer your questions or give you any specific medical advice, but seeing a chiropractor or PT who's familiar with this condition is typically a great resource to answer those questions.
This is amazing Thankyou… do you still have a pillow underneath your head or is this better with out because of the angles? I also I have this condition in both legs🤦🏻♀️any recommendations for this for bedtime and it a really struggle at the moment..x
I just didn’t have another pillow to use when I was doing the video. A pillow would be fine. It’s not very common to have it in both legs and I’d make sure to evaluate thoroughly to make sure it is in fact MP.
After watching this yesterday and I tried it I tell u it was the vest sleep I get these thoughts came to me to do it and I try it but I wasn't doing it good and after watching it I set the pillows properly and I sleep like a baby
I always Surfer merslgia paraesthetica when I'm pregnant. Last pregnancy Was so much pain. I Diagnose myself and didn't get and helpdesk from doctors. The pain Was gone after giving birth but i hat the tingling sometimes for the paßt 4 years. Now I'm pregnant again and the pakn starts All over again but I'm online 17 weeks. Last time it startet wichtige 20 weeks😢
I suffer from burning on the muscles above my left knee, lower back , lower abdomen and both inner thighs. I’m a side sleeper and use the pillow between my thighs, but I’m awaken continuously by the extreme heat that the pillow I use on my inner thighs accumulate. I feel exhausted because is a battle every night just to get a few hours of sleep. I have changed my mattress to an expensive one,, cooling pillows and bedding; nothing works. I have started chiropractic treatment and it doesn’t seem to help. I will follow you channel and will follow your advice. God bless you.
Have had this condition for over ten years and finally found out the name for it. Thanks for informing us. All this time I thought it was sciatica. Is there chance that this could possibly move up and over to the groin area and cause numbness in those areas
Typically MP is localized to the front/outside of the thigh. Numbness in the groin area would raise my suspicions that the lumbar spine is generating it, however, I really can't say with any confidence without doing an exam and history. Thanks for watching and hopefully you found the video helpful!
Hey, I have pain there as well and been diagnosed with Cruralgia. Maybe that's something you can explore ? It's like sciatica but also involve the front of your leg and groin area.
@@JasonWilliamsDC-Chiro-Rehab I have all the Meralgia Paresthetica symptoms as well as groin pain on that side. A lot of things I read online say that is part of the condition.
Hoping you found it helpful, I know Meralgia Paresthetica can be a very difficult condition to get over or manage but it can be done! Best of luck in your recovery!
I began to see a chiropractor for this condition of which I’ve had for 5 years or more. Finally, was diagnosed correctly. I searched for home remedies and found your guidelines. This is great news that I can help myself. Is the advice of using a butter knife every other day, to go up and down my outer thigh ( which is excruciating) a remedy too?
I was diagnosed finally this year with this condition. The last 5 years, After many trips to rehab, massages, meds(!), I finally returned to a Chiroprator. I found your information so encouraging. I’ve had surgeries, but not overweight ever, didn’t wear tight clothes, and had no injuries. I was a faithful at spin class, for years. Idk why this happened. The pain feels like a rip in the thigh with a dull knife! I scream out at night because I move slightly. Question: is the advice to use a butter knife up and down the outside of my leg every other day going to help? This technique makes me yell out.
I'm sorry to hear you're struggling with this condition, I know from experience with patients that it can be so difficult. I'm not sure about that advise or who gave it to you so I guess I can't really comment on it. I hope you are able to find relief or a strategy to at least manage it to make sleeping more comfortable. Thanks for watching!
Can you recommend a bed for this condition? I’ve been disabled with chronic fatigue syndrome for over a decade and have gained a lot of weight because of that. (i’m currently approximately 5 foot 4 inches and 230 pounds) I recently had to move into a smaller place and gave away my queen size bed and I’m now in a hospital bed. I had a touch of this before I moved here 8 months ago, but it’s really has gotten much worse and painfully ridiculous at this point. I can’t sleep for more than two hours at a time because I wake up with this excruciating pain. I use to get tingly and numb once in a blue moon before moving here but ever since I moved it has increasingly gotten worse and now every single day it’s pins and needles and excruciating pain. And I really believe it has something to do with this bed and the new lounger that I’m using during the day instead of my old sofa recliner that I had before. I’m not really sure what it is about the new furniture pieces that have made my condition 100 times worse. This bed is softer than my other very soft bed I had before and for the first time I’m using an adjustable bed. This bed has also tore up my left shoulder. It was a good shoulder before this bed. So now I’m forced to sleep on my back and the only way I can fall asleep on my back is more like in a sitting up position using the adjustable bed. When I wake up in the middle of the night then I will flatten the bed more. I need to get another bed and I don’t really know what it is about this bed that is actually causing all this pain for me. Do you know why this bed is hurting me ? I don’t want to end up turning around and buying the same problem again. This hospital bed has 6 1/2 inches of foam on the top and my old bed was very soft with coils and a pillow top. I really need a good nights sleep and I hope that you can shed some light on what kind of a bed and mattress I should be getting. Underneath the 6 1/2 inches of foam on my current hospital bed, I placed a regular coiled twin mattress there because otherwise when I just had the foam I could feel the metal wires they have as the support system underneath, it hurt my hip when sleeping on my left side. Before I put the twin mattress under there I woke up feeling like somebody had beat me up in the middle of the night every night. I don’t know how they can put seniors on these beds in the assisted living facilities. They are horrible beds. Thank you for your service.
I'm sorry I can't give you any specific advice, and I typically find that patients have different preferences for what type of bed helps them sleep comfortably. A chiropractor, physical therapist, or medical doctor who's familiar with your condition may be the best to ask and hopefully, they can give you some valuable advice on what might work best. I truly wish you well and hope you're able to find something that helps!
Thank you for your videos. Unfortunately I’m not feeling the relief I would like. I’m still woken in the night and just today for the first time it felt like the numb tingley feeling has extended to the outside of my lower shin. It’s very slight but I noticed it. What is your advice for this?
I can't give you specific advise since you're not a patient I've seen. I will say if it's extending below the knee, I wouldn't expect that with Meralgia Paresthetica. That would raise my suspicion of Femoral nerve radiculopathy or Sciatica nerve radiculopathy which can be caused by a few things, namely issues in the lumbar spine. It's always prudent to see a medical provider like a rehab-based chiropractor and get an examination, imaging if needed, and treatment if needed. From my experience the sooner these types of conditions are treated the better the outcomes. I wish you the best of luck in your recovery.
Unfortunately I have it with both sides. I am over weight so sleepy on my belly is out of the question. I've ice down my both thighs. I've also Aleve and Biofreeze.
Hopefully, some exercises will be helpful, you can check out my video where I cover exercises for MP if you'd like. Rehab is really the best way for relieving it in the long term. Best wishes and thanks for watching!
Only question I have is there a modified side sleep for the side that is affected? I have two major tears in my Rotator cuff (supraspinatus & Infraspinatus) both are completely torn from the humerus. I'm having to wait until June before I can have surgery. It's just taken so long to get this taken care of. Been working on the repair for 5 years now so hopefully in June it will happen but until then I still need to sleep and very hard to get comfortable on my back. So if you have any ideas that I can use to get through this painful time I would greatly appreciate it. The rest of your video was very informative and I'm sure it will work for me.
If I was in that situation, I would use pillows and positions to find something that's tolerable for sleeping in the meantime. Personally, I would focus on exercising too as that has an important global effect on pain. I wish you the best of luck in your recovery(s).
Hi can you recommend the exercises for the same during pregnancy. I just developed Meralgia paresthetica in my third trimester on my right Anterolateral thigh. Gets worse standing even for just 5 minutes. Just getting unbearable. Am not even obese or diabetic. Sleeping with pillows between my legs helping me sleep better.
Sorry to hear that, that sounds like something that may be a contributing factor. Hopefully you can reverse what's going on and get back to feeling yourself again. Thanks for checking out my channel!
What position if you are a side sleeper with bilateral symptoms? I have major spinal problems and if I wake up and move my legs the slightest hint, the pain is excruciating. I literally feel like someone is pulling the skin off my thighs. My PCP and Pain Management MDs are clueless...
That's a tough one. MP isn't as common to have on both sides. I always give the best advice to my patients but tell them they need to have body awareness, or listen to their body, and see what position is the most comfortable for them. Enough quality sleep is critical to the healing process, especially in patients with spinal conditions.
I think i’ve been experiencing meralgia paresthetica, it’s not a constant thing but it only happens when I sleep on my back. I had never experienced before but recently when sleeping on my back with my legs flat on the bed i’ll wake up in the middle of the night with this awful burning pain in my thigh, it’s pretty painful. If I sleep on my side I don’t experience it, only when sleeping on my back I wake up with my thigh burning in pain , but it goes away after a short period of time upon waking up. I’ll try the pillow thing to mitigate this problem if it is in fact what i’m experiencing.
Sounds like it could be meralgia paresthetica but its hard to say without an exam a diagnosis. I hope you're able to find some relief with these suggestions!
@@CrazyRedYoyo I haven’t been diagnosed, but I did talk to my physical therapist about it and I believe that’s what it is. I think it could be due to sitting for long periods of time, maybe bad posture and like I said lying flat on my back is what flared it up. I would wake up in the middle of the night with insane nerve pain in my thigh. Putting the pillow under my legs when sleeping did help me though, I also did stretches and tried to be mindful about it and eventually it did go away thank god. But I am still careful now to try to not flare it up
@@grimreefer213 thanks for replying. Same for me, I sit a lot at my desk and when I sleep on my back I wake up with numbness/burning sensation, sometimes excruciating pain. This has been happening to me in the past 10 years, but I was scared to see a doc. I just avoided to sleep on my back.. wish you well!
The vast majority of the time only a good exam and history are needed. Sometimes if stubborn cases or if the provider suspects something more they may do an NCV, EMG, or diagnostic injections. Thanks for watching!
I have pain in my left side of my back 4 days ago and it's travel to my front thigh, after one day extreme running pain, now I have numbness and burning pain in my upper thigh, and still pain in my back, I got my MRI and diagnosed with tethered cord syndrome, did this problem of Meralgia paresthetica is because of tethered cord?
I'm really sorry to hear you're struggling with those symptoms and a tethered cord. That's a great question, I haven't treated any patients with tethered cord. That's a great question to ask the doctor who ordered the MRI. I hope you recovery ASAP and wish you well on your recovery.
I have this in left thigh and it's really bad at night. Wakes me up it's so bad. My question is that because I have right shoulder/ neck pinched nerves and neuropathy so my hands go numb laying on That side Struggling cause I can't stay in any position for long enough to get good sleep... what suggestions may you have?
I have huge complications after a stomacsurgery. All kinds of strange and not so strange complications like pain, fatigue, depression, sleep problems, major nutrion lack (not enough Dvitamin, b12, folat (don't know the English word) and loads more) so I'm on doctors prescription for several minerals and vitamins. I do lack albumin (protein) aswell. Now to my question - can Meralgia Paresthetica come from for example skeleton issues in the spine, like disc compression due to malnutrition (previous scans has shown disc compression and osteopleni the stage before osteoporosis). And can it come from a tumor? My father passed away a few years ago from cancer. He had metastasis in one of his hips, almost eaten all hip away... 😱 So what ive found about this up till now is the most common reason is some form of irritation or pressure to the nerve from either outer facts like belts clothing and so on or from inner pressure like overweight, spinal closeness... But can it come from more benign things like cancer or discdegeneration? I'm truly embarrassed about my crappy english but I hope you can understand my question anyway!? Loads of prethanks from Sweden 🇸🇪
I'm sorry to hear you're managing all those conditions and wish you the best of luck in recovery. MP doesn't come from a disc issue, but an entrapment near the front of the hip. There is a rare case report of a disc issue with referral causing a condition that mimicks MP, but I think it's probably rare. MP is rather straightforward compared to other types of burning/tingling/numbness nerve issues. MP also only involves sensory fibers, so if there's weakness involved that's a factor that rules out MP when I'm making a diagnosis. The best thing would be to ask your doctor since they're going to be familiar with your case. Unfortunately, I can't give you any specific answers since you're not a patient of mine. I wish you the best and thanks for checking out our channel!
I can't give you any specific advice since you're not a patient of mine. If I had this condition I would put the TENS pads on the front of my hip/upper thigh. Thanks for watching and best of luck!
I advise my patients to use it as needed for relief. It's really just helpful for topical relief but isn't going to make any significant changes to the actual problem spot.
I can't really say if these sleep positions would be helpful or not, I suppose you'd have to see. From what I understand RLS is especially multifactorial and has some contributing factors that may include emotional health (stress), exercise levels, and dietary factors which influence brain chemicals and how the brain communicates with muscles of the leg. I wish you the best in finding a solution that works for you!
Is it possible to have this condition in both legs I have it mainly on right leg but when I lay on my back I get it in both legs and also is this condition ever going to leave
It is possible to have it in both legs. I usually dig pretty deep into the exam because it's less likely to have it on both sides than just one side. Sometimes something more serious can be at the root of the discomfort if it's happening on both sides, but that's not always the truth and my intention isn't to worry you. Don't forget to see a great rehab-focused chiropractor to be evaluated. I'm working on a 3 part blog to answer many questions about Meralgia Paresthetica that I will be posting in the description of the videos very soon.
I have a doctor of chiropractic and not a doctor of physical therapy, so slightly different studies and different degrees with different scopes of practice depending on state/country.
That's a great question. The answer is get an exam and have a skilled provider palpate the area and come to a correct diagnosis. It's nearly futile, unless you have a background in medicine or maybe athletic training, to figure it out yourself. Best of luck and thanks for checking out our channel!
I'm really sorry to hear that. It can be really helpful to see a chiropractor or therapist who's familiar with this condition to find out how to solve it for good. Best of luck in your recovery!
It can happen, but I would be suspicious of another diagnosis if the symptoms were bilateral. I would investigate further to make sure is no narrowing of the spinal canal, specifically.
@@JasonWilliamsDC-Chiro-Rehabthanx a lot for response.. it was unilateral and used to get relived by gaba and amitrypt. a few years back. Now that I recently got diagnosed with Diabetes Mellitus , it got intense in previous leg as well as started developing in other leg especially at night. Can it be related to DM? I gained weight too in past few years.
Any tips on sleeping with bilateral meralgia parasthetica? I’m 27w pregnant so I cant do the side or belly sleeping. I tried pillow between the thighs but I have to keep flipping over bc my bottom leg gets numb after 5 mins
Oh gosh, I'm sorry to hear that you're struggling with that! I know a lot of lower back, hip, and leg complaints start during pregnancy because of how you're body is changing. I can give you any specific advise since you're not a patient of mine, but when my wife was pregnant is was mostly about finding what feels best using different beds, pillows, and positions. Hopefully as your body changes the conditions reduces. A chiropractor who focuses on treating pregnant patients can be a great resource to have a more comfortable pregnancy and there is evidence to back up their care (it's generally really safe as well.) I wish you the best of luck in your journey and also, congratulations!
I'm really sorry to hear that. I know back pain affects 60% of women up to a year after their delivery (if I remember the data correctly.) Chiropractors can be a great resource. Best of luck and thanks for watching!
So can i ask my doctor suspects its this but my pain is on my outer upper thigh just under the hip and it only starts burning and pain after about ten mins of laying on my left id begins on my right so its not the side i sleep on. Could this still be MP like doc "suspects" as i see ur advice is to lay on the opposite side to whats sore but thats what triggers mine?
It can involve sensation towards the side of the thighs, but so can sciatica so it's important to figure out which you're experiencing in order to nail down the correct rehab strategy.
Sorry to hear that. The rehab that I post to YT, is for the most part, aimed at making long term improvement and not always going to reduce pain immediately although it sometimes does. Recovery is often a long term process that takes consistency and the right strategy. Best of luck in your recovery and I hope you're able to find some relief!
That seems like something that could cause excess compression in that area, certainly. I'm working on a few blogs that cover this condition more in depth - stay tuned.
I don't give specific advice on individual treatment and don't give medication advice either so it may be best to ask your doctor. Thanks for watching!
I think I have this condition. I had a hip replacement on my right hip 4 days ago, and now I have a numb, tingly feeling in my left thigh during the day which turns to a burning pain at night with some episodes of stabbing pain. Would you recommend seeing a chiropractor at the moment? With the hip replacement being so recent, it looks like I wouldn’t be able to do the exercises at the moment as it’s not recommended to lie on the front and I can’t put weight on the right leg.
I would suspect it could be a response to the surgery, but can't say for sure. Typically I advise patients to ask their surgeon during their follow-up. Most of the time my patients tell me their doctor informs them it will go away and it usually does go away with time in my clinical experience.
It very well could be, there's not always pain associated with this condition and sometimes it's described medically as dysesthesia (essentially abnormal sensation) or dysesthesia (lack of sensation.)
@@JasonWilliamsDC-Chiro-Rehab I did the exercises in this video last night. I normally sleep with the pillow between my knees, but last night I slept on my stomach with a pillow underneath, I woke up and my leg wasn’t numb. I found that leaning over an exercise ball helps too. I have not had any numbers at all today thanks to your video. I will continue to do these exercises 😊
I'm not sure if this is the condition I have, but I did suspect I had a pinched nerve. The pain is in my left thigh. Anytime the pain increases, my leg momentarily loses strength. Is that normal for this condition? I've noticed that it only hurts if my torso is too close to my left knee (which means it hurts to lift my knee, and it hurts to lean forward in my chair without leaning to the right as well). And as you said in this video, when sleeping on your back if you have your legs straight it hurts. So basically the closer I am to a 180 degree angle formed by my thigh and torso, or the closer it is to a 90 degree angle, it hurts (somewhere in between the two it feels just fine)
Sorry to hear you're suffering with that kind of leg discomfort. I think I mention in one of the videos that Meralgia Paresthetica doesn't cause weakness. That usually rules out, in my head, that its MP. The LFCN is a sensory nerve only. Sometimes folks get pain-related weakness, in other words, they get a feeling of weakness because it's so painful to move a certain way or be in a certain position. This is something a chiropractor can tease-out during an exam. I always suggest seeing a reputable rehab-focused chiropractor to make sure the diagnosis and treatment are right for the individuals symptoms. I wish you the best of luck in your recovery.
@@JasonWilliamsDC-Chiro-Rehab thanks for the reply. I found out the cause of my condition. A full sigmoid colon. Somebody on the internet had the exact same details as me and I found out the cause and fixed it. I am mostly back to normal now And yeah, I would say it was pain related weakness
You know, that's a great question. I know the typical progression is to try to rehab it (stretches, exercises, tissue work, CMT, other things a DC or PT offer), steroid injections, and then there may be a nerve block technique or tissue release that orthopedic MDs do in tough cases. I haven't had a patient who required surgery or injection for this condition before/yet.
my grandma maybe have this condition,,,its two months already,,shes taking medicines but it did not help,,,the medicines make her lately go to ospital,,,she admitted because she did not wake up,,,
Great question! Typically a physical exam and history are enough. Otherwise, a diagnostic injection or NCV test with the nerve may be used in persistent cases as far as I know. Thanks for watching!
