😀🇩🇴 Good afternoon,,, First, I wana ask you a few question ,,,? What is you name? An how can I get you email address an phone number,,, ? My name is Alexander,, thank you for taking you time,,, to show new drivers what you ,, God bless you,,😀🇩🇴
also remember to count the holes or notches before you move it if you are close on your weight so you only have to go through this once. Save some money getting reweighed each time. same goes for sliding tandems on trailers
I wish my trucking school taught you how to adjust the fifth wheel (skidplate for some). The instructors teach you how to identify the parts on the coupling system and what defects to look for but not how to properly adjust the fifth wheel. Great video as always!
One little mistake or opps, forgot to check that, damn it. Sometimes it's takes hours to correct when it could have taken you ten seconds to check ,ALWAYS CHECK IT TWICE, WHEN IN DOUBT CHECK THE DAMN THING AGAIN WHATEVER IT WAS IN DOUBT ,TIME IS MONEY ALWAYS! JJM IN MONTGOMERY ALABAMA SENT
I’ve been watching your videos for a couple years (I am subscribed) but I’m looking at it from the perspective of a commercial mobile tech who has a Class A. I wish more people paid attention. I enjoy getting to see the last generation share with the new generation - even if it’s only that I love getting paid but I’d rather take your money honestly than take your money because you got on a rush and destroyed something. The attention to complete control during this process is important as well, I’ve seen more than one guy just violently slamming things for no reason (I later got to torch his trailer jacks off and replace them after he smashed it all the way forward). This and your explanation of swing-dip clearances are two reasons alone I wish that you ran a driving school. Please keep it up! Retirement can’t get you yet.
Great Vid! I'll be goin thru some training soon (Jan 2017). Used to straight jobs....Trailer driving Is definitely going to be interesting to say the least. Starting a new road adventure with a lady friend. Both of us are pretty excited about this. Thanks again for your info on this subject.
Should not have to move it..if u have it rite. If u single single double single. It will work out all the time. If they are loading the way back and it's 2 heavy fuck em you don't need to be hauling it anyway.
If you haul different trailer set ups you should know how to do it. But yes, if you pull the same thing all the time, you should get it set within a few loads to be where it needs to be. But it is good to slide them once or twice a week, especially in winter to keep them from freezing up.
great video very knowledgeable but most company's drivers can't move there 5th will well not mine at least but I like all ur video's keep up the great work sir
The various shippers and different loads may use different load patterns for weight distribution or to take up less space or whatever, the result being you will end up with differing axle weights all the time and you may need to adjust. Dave
Thanks for the video. I was told at a weigh station that I was 800 over on drives...didn't know about this trick. Ended up with everything In the floorboard of my truck. Lol
Really nice looking pete you have there. I really enjoy the way those trucks look and especially sound they make. Also good info on sliding the 5th wheel, i haven't had to do this yet, but now i know how.
I have a question. How do you know where you stopped the slide. There is a weight for each notch on the slide, for instance 2,000 pounds per notch, you need to shift 4,000 pounds, that means two notches, Please demonstrate sliding it two notches, and getting it right the first time with out rocking the truck. Watch my video here. you tube, under slide tool.
i m new driver last night i have a big problem, i did wrong thank God i come home, no problem i did totally wrong, thankyou very much for your video help m e 100% GOD BLESS YOU
What is also useful is to get into a habit of turning on your 4 ways and checking your marker lights and tires as you go around checking your 5th wheel. Good video, driving is all about Reflexes and habits.
That is the easiest way to slide your fifth wheel.but did you notice the fifth wheel was not flat easiest way to break the Jaws .. reinflate the airbags so we can put pressure on our lock.. dude drive a rock bucket with PTO .Hey did Bill start today yeah he flipped his bucket he'll be alright..
thanks Mike, I have had my B since October of last year, just got my Hazmat and picked up a job driving a tanker for a fuel company, hoping to go to school for my A within the year.
Good video and common sense. Sliding empty is the best (Low Bed, and knowing where to put equipment first). Been there, done that. But still, good video.
My fifth wheel is all the way to the front and my truck drives like a pogo stick. Would moving the fifth wheel back help the drive of my truck. It’s a 2020 international pro star and I haul reefer.
Those trucks ride like that anyway, the question is, what is your steer weight on a maxed out load? If it is over 12k lbs you definitely need to slide it back.
That is a good way to tear them off. In the old days, before spring brakes were a thing, you HAD to connect the air lines and apply pressure to the trailer brakes to keep it from sliding. Nowadays it is not necessary to do that and can be bad if roll forward too far or get the lines stuck between 5th wheel and trailer.
I never had to slide my 5tg wheel but I have a question. My dog had pushed the button for the 5th wheel, i didnt notice it until I stopped.. nothing had happend while I was driving. I pushed it to lock but wasnt sure.
ok say you have 14. 32 21 you have to adjust it and all the weight goes to your middle steering axle so you have to adjust it. because your over at 36 in your middle steers and slide your tandems all the way to the back to have a legal weight is that legal. to drive your tandems all the way to the back ?
I'm afraid I don't understand your question. By "middle steers" do you mean the drive axles? The farther back you slide your trailer tandems the more weight you put on your drives. Dave
So , I am a new driver and I am driving a base model international prostar with no air suspension gauge and no dump valve for the suspension . What do I do ?
Hi Guy(s), just wanted to thank you for the work, research, and time you are taking to produce these excellent videos. I have been out of the business for many years and I find your videos as an excellent refresher and good advice for learning new safe tricks. Thank you again, Ciao, L
Ive been trying to raise my fontaine wheel on my 05 international. Dealer cant find higher slide brackets higher than 10". Ques is. Will any fifth wheel different make fit my truck if bought with slider?
I tried to do the same thing with my Holland fifth wheel but discovered that to go any higher than 10 inches the manufacturers wanted the fifth wheel to be fixed. [no slider] for strength reasons. Dave
On my truck I have to disconnect from the trailer and move the 5th wheel by hand. The problem on my truck is the locking pins or teeth actually will not disengage without using a long prt bar or crow bar to pound on the locking teeth to get them to release. They won't release by just flipping the switch up on the dash. Once released I have to use the prybar to move the 5th wheel. Each notch is 250 lbs. So if I'm 750 lbs too heavy on the steers I move the 5th wheel back 3 teeth or notches. Then reengage the locking pins or teeth and using the crow/pry bar make sure it is locked into place. Then reconnect the trailer... Verify my weight... And off we go! Very valuable videa... And just one more thing they don't teach in truck driving school.
The reason why the pins won't release is they are rusted in place. I think this is fairly common. They get moved so seldom that they rust in place. I've tried lubbing them up but it doesn't last and have to go through the manual process each time. The main thing is to avoid a ticket at all costs as this goes on your driving record and can affect your employability. I've got about 6 violations on mine and been denied jobs becouse of them!!!
One time got a ticket as the weight on my drives was 36,000 lbs! When reading the readout on the scale I thought it said 30,000! My eyes ain't that good anymore! DAMN!!! 😭
I used to haul plastic pipe on flatbed they have this lube it's a tipe of soap put it on the slider no grease it's clean and it helps slide real easy they sell it at home depot it makes everything slide so easy
Smart-Trucking.com so should I keep my fifth wheel closer to tractor always does it help me turn better since the container with the chassis will be closer
+XGiveMeLibertyX I saw a video with a state trooper inspecting a truck, first thing he checks is the king pin. Most common issue he finds, king pin not set properly. Oh my, 40000 lbs being held on a truck by grease, there's a good feeling.
Do you recommend buying a used truck? Let's say I have $20,000 to spend. what can that buy. Around what year and mileage. I am a big fun of your videos. Thanks again
E Galindo Keep in mind that if you buy your own truck you are responsible for all maintainance, insurance and taxes ,fuel, ECT. It can cost you $35,000 or more a year in some states as much as $50,000 a year.
The other night I had a nose heavy trailer. After scaling it three times I ended up with my tandems full forward and my fifth wheel full aft and was still 300 lbs over on my steers with my drives and trailer wheels at 31k each. Fuel tanks full. All that being said am I right to believe I can never have more than 31k on my drives without being over 12k on my steers?
+ZIONISIM KILLS keeping them dry and clean doesn't attract dirt which really suck when you can't get them to release when you need to move the fifth wheel. Some guys hardly ever need to move it so if it is dry, there are no problems
Little trick if you don't have a suspension air dump, Slide your tandems to the rear, then drop your landing gear to one inch above the ground. Now slid your tandems back to the front and lock them, Now drop your landing gear the rest of the way, this will encourage your leveling valve to dump your airbags and save your back.
a usefull tip, have not driven much semi trucks before. now i got a combi dump/semi truck i can switch frames from one to the other. all i need now are one or more semi trailers to pull with it. the qustion is what to get first, a dump semi or a stepteck. have not decided yet.
I has 11 years driving truck, and never any buddy show me how to do that, never, by the way is the first time I see a driver doing that, thanks, and yes, I was doing wrong, or at less in the different way but was harder to do it. thanks.
I usually lift the trailer once it's on the fith wheel but not connected make sure that the landing legs are about 6 inch of the floor and then I reverse once it's coupled pull forward and check visually if it's coupled
I drove an older “well-spec’d” International for a while that had a sliding 5th wheel but never messed with it (never needed to). Recently moved up to a newer Cascadia (former Crete “Company Truck”) without a sliding 5th wheel so all this is now irrelevant but I will remember this whenever I am in the other truck.
+Neil Jeffs In the UK you wouldn't dump the rear axle with the pin engaged and the legs hard down for fear of bending the jaws we'd also snatch the trailer when engaging the pin to check it's caught, no good putting the airlines on and have the trailer run off because they haven't.
