You may be wondering: how do I snake a drain? This is a job you can easily do yourself. Leah from See Jane Drill shows you how to snake a drain using a drum augers.
1) Remove the p-trap on your sink. Make sure to use a bucket to catch the water that comes out.
2) Remove the front screw of the drum auger. Push the snake through the pipe until you meet resistance. Once you meet resistance, tighten the screw up.
3) Spin the auger to drill through the blockage. Turn the handle as you push forward.
4) Hold on to the end to loosen the nut, pull the snake out just a little bit, tighten the nut and repeat the process.
5) Once you've felt you've cleared the blockage, remove the drum auger and replace the p-trap

I CLEAN the snake & hang it up for a day to let it dry, before I coil it back into the drum because the drum is not vented. To 1 keep the gross stuff out of it and keeps mold from growing in side the drum.

Q: how do you make the snake go around corners? Mine hits the end of the (straight part of the) pipe, but no matter how much I rotate it does not position it to the entrance to the rest of the pipework.[EDIT: I needed to use a thinner auger]
@richardburchett
@richardburchett 3 года назад
The drain probably hits a T intersection inside the wall with the drain going down and the vent going up. If you just can't make it go down the drain toward the clog, you might want to go up on the roof and snake straight down that way. It will keep you from having to do a 90 degree turn with the snake.
@Andybaby
@Andybaby 3 года назад
@@richardburchett thanks for the response. I since figured out that I was using a (too thick) toilet snake. I got a thinner one, and it worked! Just turn a few times and BOOM, down the rest of the way it went! Extracted it w a few clumbs of goo, blockage gone! $40 Auger saved me $300 plumbers bill! (and I still have the auger if it ever happens again!)

I live in a condo, and I was advised to have the HOA do this job, because if I somehow break the pipe with the snake, I can flood someone, and it can turn into a lawsuit??? Is this BS? Should I do myself or have HOA plumber do it?

Now show how it really is, Black muck everywhere, smelly nasty mess, Arms getting tired from turning and pushing the snake to get it 15 to 20 feet down the line, and finally your break through then you can't get the snake out, took me 20 minutes to pull the 20 feet of snake out, On A positive note I did unclog my wives hair and plastic hair pins from the drain. Didn't have to call A plumber, took 20 minutes to clean up the nasty black mess with scouring powder. Good tutorial but it never goes that smoothly.

I hear that! 🤣 Working on my kitchen sink, and my mom's bathroom sink and washing machine/kitchen drain in the basement at her house. Her bathroom should be RELATIVELY easy since it's completely open space. Drilled my kitchen drain (which isn't up to code... and needs a new drain cap since it allows water to back up and flow into the under sink area... which is all unfinished particle board-like wood!)... The arm and hand getting tired is so real. Especially with arthritis creeping in on me over the years. And I'm still under 40 😢 drilled for 45 mins. This drain also has a 90° angle bend about 20 ft down and my auger is only 25'. Better, but not fixed. I swear by Hair and Grease in the big black bottle for stubborn clogs. Saved us a few times with a very slow drain or complete clog in our tub several times. But, rather useless for slow drains or anything you don't want it sitting in for less than 12 hours. Since it's lye, pretty sure it can heat up to the point where it might damage PVC piping. Anyways... Auger that's worthwhile is ~$40 here. Time and hard work, basically just saves $50 on a job done by a qualified plumber. Or potentially several hundred if you go with big names like Roto-Rooter. TL;DR - U rite lol

I was going to buy a snake, but after I took the P-trap off, I found out that the drain pipe under the sink was clogged with dental floss. There was a piece of soft bar soap mixed with the floss. I thought that the soap would dissolve: it didn’t. I had put the floss on the counter next to the sink: it ended up in the sink.

Never use chemical products for 2 reasons. One they don't work most of the time (like 99% ) The other reason is that if you try to snake the tube or call the plumber there is a chance that you can get a severe chemical burn if there is any splashing.

Excellent. IF however, you have troubles with the snake auger end NOT moving around the bend and downwards, due to other plumbing (for instance two lines, the kitchen sink line an the bathroom line meeting at a T) like two lines meeting at an "old" (and in some states now illegal) T connection, and your snake auger tip won't go the right direction, down, then patience, fiddling, patience, until your auger goes DOWN to unclog whatever. For me, it was years and years of grease build=up which was at or below where both my kitchen and my bathroom lines met, and the part that was blocked I just had to auger, and auger, and auger, until all the built-up grease was loosened. (There still is stuff there, I just have to keep augering down there every three months still, next step call a plumber to go into the walls and fix those lines where they meet and wherever that internal grease blockage is due to ancient pre-today's-code for lines meeting, or whatever the old piping problem is in my old apartment building). (When our building maintenance man worked on it, twice now, he keeps finding plastic pieces down in there, so in an apartment building with decades of tenets, old plumbing, it can get more advanced. Keep trying.)

Using a new drum auger with "auto-feed" feature, the cable stopped advancing about 10 feet into the wall. Backing the cable out slightly and hand-pushing it forward did not help. Neither did just "spinning" the cable. In my humble homeowners opinion either the tip of the cable cannot move thru a 90 degree elbow or the obstruction won't budge. What is my next COST-EFFECTIVE step ? Thanx. Bewildered Bob

That wire on the drum augers gets rusty. Started using mine for the third time and the wire broke. Fortunately it snapped right at the beginning of the floor drain hole , so I was able to pull the broken piece that was in the underground pipe out. Imagine if it broke under the concrete slab I would have to dig up the concrete to get it out or maybe a plumber would be able to snag it out.
