Hope you guys enjoyed today’s video! We soaked Largo a female tortoise who was a little lethargic recently and not doing so well! She recently has bounced back completely and is doing amazing!
Hydration when it comes to keeping tortoises is super important. Hydrating your adults is just as important as hydrating your babies. For the babies as I show in this video , I soak for about 30-40 mins daily in direct sunlight . They are constantly being monitored , so that I can change the water and make sure no ones flipped . You can soak daily ( like I do ) or three times a week ( this would be the minimum / recommended) . ALWAYS REMEMBER THAT THESE TORTOISES CANNOT SWIM, so don’t DROWN them! Soaking is a key component to proper growth . Soaking must be done for tortoises being kept both inside and outside . Soaking allows you to monitor your tortoise and ensure proper hydration. Hydration is key. Even when the sun isn’t out, soaking is just as important!

I like the fact you get to the point... I dont care about peoples dads hair line, ] w a r mom's toe nails, your boy friend. Most people are looking for information for a reason. Say someone's choking and you need to give CPR, but dont know how. There is not a single video on this platform that gets to the point. So we thank you!

My beast comes out to shower when the sprinklers come on for the grass area. He'll walk over and settle right in front of the sprayer even on warmer days of winter. The heaters in winter enclosures remove a lot of humidity. A protected pail of water inside the enclosure helps a little.

I soak as well in plastic, but I now use a colored tupperware container. Using clear tends to have them always trying to get out, because they can see out.

@ReadyReptiles
@ReadyReptiles Год назад
Hi there! Thanks for watching! Soaking may not be their favorite thing, but it is necessary. What i suggest is getting a tub with higher sides and also one that maybe is of a solid color. Tortoises are visual creatures so they wont try and escape things they cant see out of!
@energeticsoulhealer888
@energeticsoulhealer888 Год назад
When I rescued my sulcatta at just a few months old, he constantly tried to escape, and did so, for years. He's now almost 5 years old, and doesn't try to escape anymore. I'm not sure if he realized he won the torty lottery, haha, or what, but he's really adapted to our program. He uses the dog door (he taught himself, probably bc he was trying to escape, lol) to go out in the day, then comes to the back door around 5pm every night to come in, eat a snack, and go to bed. He has a cage with a warmer that he likes to sleep in. We don't lock him in, and he's got full house access, but that's what he chooses. In the day, he just heads outside on his own. In the summer, we use a baby pool for his soaks, and in winter he uses my big bath tub (he outgrew his plastic bath). Next year, no one will be able to pick him up (my 21 year old son still can now), so we'll have to figure out something else to get him in his bath. We bathe him every 5 days, or so. He loves them. I used to bathe him in the kitchen sink, and I'd run warm water on his shell, and he'd poop and poop and poop, haha. At first, I thought something was wrong. Nope, he was so relaxed and happy, that he'd poop away. He just loves warm water. Just stay consistent, so your baby trusts that you're not going anywhere. I think keeping a schedule has worked well for us. Someone dumped him in our neighborhood, and he was loose over a month, so it took a while for him to trust us, etc. I hope this helps 🙏 ❤️

the cement mixing tubs are called Mortar Pans...for what its worth. Is chlorinated city water bad?
@ReadyReptiles
@ReadyReptiles Год назад
Did not know! Thanks ! Learned something new! As far as city water it’s ok , might be the same a hose water . But you’ll be ok with faucet/city water. That is only for soaking tortoises , any aquatic turtles will need to have the water dechlorinated ( adding that in incase anyone sees this in the future ) !

@ReadyReptiles
@ReadyReptiles 2 года назад
They may not necessarily enjoy it at first , but over time they’ll get used to it . My recommendation would be a darker tub higher walls where they can see out if they get uneasy!

Dou you wake Largo to soak in the morning or wait til she's more active and out of her enclosure? Not sure if we should wake our 15 year old sulcata (newly adopted) to reach the morning sun for a soak or wait for him to come out of his house on his own and be more active at around noon onwards

I have a two year old sulcata tortoise, he is my favourite thing, and is bathing him every day too much? And he sometimes likes to splash around in puddles when I take him out and they are usually muddy, can he bask in dirty water?
@ReadyReptiles

Soaking daily is super beneficial! Soaking in muddy water is not bad per say, but clean water is preferred!

@ReadyReptiles

If they havent been eating. Soak them to see if they pass anything out naturally. If not the best is to keep them warm and see a vet for further diagnostics!

Question - the sulcata’s natural habitat is the fringe grasslands of the Sahara. Do you know where they go in their “homeland” to soak? Do they even have that opportunity?
@jefryt67
@jefryt67 Год назад
They get alot of humidity from the ground in the wild
@razzmatazz52726
@razzmatazz52726 Год назад
They burrow underground to stay cool. That's why Sulcatas are digging machines. There has to be water source somewhere because no matter what they eat it still isn't enough water to sustain them. Just like us (minus the burrowing, lol!).
@ReadyReptiles
@ReadyReptiles Год назад
The Sahel region of Africa I'm sure has water sources near by for them! Also frequent mud holes I'm sure are created where they get the opportunity to soak and catch a drink! Just like anything they will be getting more of their water from rain and through most of the food they eat. But water is key for life! so positive they find water! Will look into this further, possibly make a video!

it is usually because of lack of sunlight and a nutrient deficiency.
@ReadyReptiles
@ReadyReptiles Год назад
Hi! For pyramiding it can be caused by tons of factors! The best is to make sure you are feeding a proper and well rounded diet, soak, make sure they have UVB and avoiding any high protein or extreme nutrient based foods! Remember a sulcata tortoise enjoys a high fiber low fruit diet! Videos on my channel about this!
