Word of advice on soldering. In order for solder to bond to something . That something must reach the proper temperature for the bonding to take place. So I saw you having trouble getting it to bond to the area you scratched that was because you need to press the very tip of the iron to the scratched surface in order to transfer the heat. I think you eventually got it to work by a gradually heating the area by letting the liquid solder doing the heat transfer but this can actually damage the circuit board because the heat spreads farther away from the spot you are working. Just a brief touch of the iron is all it takes and it would bond almost instantly

I have a question, I've been having issues with my controller pressing down on it's own and opened it up and see if cleaning it out would do the trick. It turned out that the red wire on the left (+) of the motherboard is detached. Would I go about soldering this back on in the same way that you did? Thanks in advance.

I respect you for leaving the raw attempt at this in the video. I've been doing this for almost a year and it really does show the reality of doing these mods. The contact points are so small that it requires multiple attempts! I personally find this specific board the hardest as the battery port is right beside the contacts and limits your range of motion! Just a tip if you still work on these, perhaps an iron with a smaller tip may help :)

Can you give me some ideas, please. I am having troubles with de-soldering. I did ask TheHobbyGuy, but saw your comment and wanted to ask you as well. I want to replace the Left Joystick as it does not respond to forward movement anymore. How do you de-solder all the contact points? The solder just does not want to melt at all for me to suck it up! Any ideas?
@atingleee
@atingleee 6 лет назад
h2onions Hi! Unless you have a desoldering iron then its impossible. You can get a small clipping tool and cut off each of the legs on the joysticks. Then you you grab the remaining pin with tweezers and heat up the solder from the other side and pull out each one :) Hopefully that made sense!

Sounds good! Thank you for the reply! Don't know why I didn't get a notification. Can you recommend good de-soldering iron? This is the one I currently have: www.amazon.com/Tenma-21-8240-Vacuum-Desoldering-Iron/dp/B008DJRYIG/ref=sr_1_5?ie=UTF8&qid=1522870386&sr=8-5&keywords=desoldering+iron

I have that same board the TH201 but I keep encountering a little error every time I go to check if my X button work when I tap the wire to the ground it doesn't do anything and my actual X button doesn't work when I at all while the wire is soldered to the X button point by any chance would you know why that would happen

@TheBlacSumrfs 7 лет назад
Donald Brown I didn't I ended up frying the board out 😞 ordered two more boards tho.
@TheBlacSumrfs
@TheBlacSumrfs 7 лет назад
Donald Brown yea it can be what I notice before I fried my board is that if the wires have a direct contact with the actual contact point it will work but if you put solder over it it will not work so you'll have to some how manage to solder it to the contact point without getting solder in the contact point which he somewhat stated in the video
@TheBlacSumrfs
@TheBlacSumrfs 7 лет назад
Donald Brown also think I used a thicker solder wire than he did as well I should have gotten a thinner solder wire because you need a very small amount of it
@TheHobbyGuy369
@TheHobbyGuy369 7 лет назад
Sorry i couldn't reply earlier, Past couple days I was just getting situated back into University. Ya both yours and Donald Brown 's problem seem very weird and if your X button does not work after you soldered to it entirely sounds almost like its being shorted out. Do your other buttons work when this problem comes up? And if you fried your motherboard doing this then usually that happens if you destroyed the contact point in the process of soldering to it because I know i have done the same things on a PS3 controller before.
@TheBlacSumrfs
@TheBlacSumrfs 7 лет назад
TheHobbyGuy yea I probably did not sure but I'm ordering two new boards come Friday. But idk tho I think it was my rumble motors wires that help fry it tho due to the wires touching the blue ribbon while I was testing the connection wasn't paying attention kelp seeing the controller connection going in and out on the tv didn't see them until it completely went out so I'm not even sure I actually fried it to be honest just know it doesn't work anymore 😔 and my tech skills are good but shit happens I guess

@TheHobbyGuy369
@TheHobbyGuy369 7 лет назад
So the other end of the wire from the circle button point is not connected to anything? If so, you may have scrapped away too much. There are usually two different contact points for each button, try the second one that's for circle.

No problem! Glad it helped! Good luck with the joystick! I've never tried that before, I imagine those solder points need a lot of heat for them to give at all. You might have to invest in a really good soldering iron. If you already have one and it is not working, than the soldering technique required might be over my expertise.

Yeah, I bought a 30 watt soldering iron that didn't help me with melting, then I bought a higher wattage one that still didn't help in melting. Maybe I'm doing something wrong or doing the wrong technique. Hopefully someone who watches these and has experience with this can help. Thanks again.

I have a link in the description to the wire i use. But really any wire will work, just recommend it to be a higher gauge. Ya you can put the button pretty much anywhere. Just make sure your controller is going to close right and doesn't get in the way of the rumbles.
