Here I show you how to use the quadrant rule or CAST diagram to solve trigonometric equations in different ranges. It saves having to use trigonometric graphs and so makes a solution quicker and more efficient.

Hi I've finished A-Levels and although late I just want to express how grateful I am for your many A-Level maths videos! I went from getting an E on past papers to a B in my A2 exams. Thank you so, so much. Your explanations are amazing - whilst my teachers at school would just tell us to use the book and memorise everything, you actually allowed me to understand! Super helpful videos. Thank you so much

Thank you ever so much. You have saved me for my A level exam. I didn't want to watch this because of it's length and reluctantly started to, but then watched till the end. You have saved me, and I love your explanations because you give reasons why certain things are the way they are, instead of just stating what they are like. It helps a lot and I am so grateful for your videos. :)

Hi, thank you for this video it really helped! But i was just wondering if we still get the full method marks for the question if we use this method? I would have presumed that some marks would have been for drawing the actual graphs, however I am not sure please can you tell me if we still would get the full method marks using this method.
@ExamSolutions_Maths
@ExamSolutions_Maths 8 лет назад
+bob bob If you apply it correctly then yes you will get the full marks unless you are specifically asked to use a graphical method which I hve yet to see at this level.

How would you use the quadrant method with " Sin(x-60) = 0.5" ?
@josephd5825
@josephd5825 3 года назад
arcsin both sides then x-60=sin^-1(0.5)/ or solve graphically i.e. draw sin x shifted 60 then draw y=0.5 for intersect

I have just received my GCSE Maths result. An A* - which came as some surprise to me, but none to my teacher. This is thanks to both you and my teacher. Now I want to attempt A Level, but this video worries me - because I`m not 100% sure of its content - ie what it is saying. My question is, do we measure all values of trig ratios in terms of the +ve direction ? My instinct would lead me to measure, for example, -ve sin theta in the -ve direction. Or does it depend upon the range we are given ? ` I trust that in asking the question my confusion is laid bare. Thank you so much for your time and hard work in producing your videos. It was only through accidentally stumbling upon them, randomly, that I became interested in maths. I will `get it,` eventually !
@ExamSolutions_Maths
@ExamSolutions_Maths 10 лет назад
Well done for getting an A*. As for your question, positive angles for solving trig equations turn anti-clockwise in the quadrant diagram and negative angles turn clockwise. Have you watched the first video in this series where I just run through the graph first of all? Also I would suggest that if you are just starting AS then go to my site and work through C1 first, this is C2 stuff.

Hi. I'm having trouble using the graphical method but it's what I'm being taught in class, will this method allow me to do the same as the graphical method and is there anything one method can do and the other cannot? Thanks
@ExamSolutions_Maths
@ExamSolutions_Maths 8 лет назад
+Boti Bot First, I would suggest that you are familiar with both methods and especially know what the graphs are like. However, the quadrant method is useful not only with this as it is quicker but it helps later when for example you are given that A is an obtuse angle and tan A = 5/12. Without using a calculator calculate the sin A. Just one example of many.
@BotanTechHelp
@BotanTechHelp 8 лет назад
Thanks for the reply, its appreciated. I've gone ahead and learnt this method and now am using it rather than the graphical method, as for knowing what graphs are like (cos, sine, tan) - I now do know what these graphs are like (thanks to another one of your videos). Thanks again.

If I was given cos(x + pi/3) = root(3)/2 How would I do this using CAST?
@AlchemistOfNirnroot
@AlchemistOfNirnroot 8 лет назад
+AliveGhost13 Convert to decimal ~0.87, and the 1st quadrant is between 0 and 90, which is 0 to pi/2, which is about 1.6. So it just over halfway through the 1st quadrant. I personally strictly use the graphs, but I'm learning CAST just in case they say no graphical method.

I’m struggling with Trigonometric identities. This is a question I do not understand: given that angle B is reflex and tan B= positive root 21/2, find the exact value of sinB and cosB?
@ExamSolutions_Maths
@ExamSolutions_Maths 5 лет назад
Then it is in the 3rd quadrant if tan B is positive and B is a reflex angle. Draw the triangle in the 3rd quad. Opp side is root (21) and the adjacent side is 2. The hyp. by Pythag is root (21 + 4) = 5. Now Sin and Cos are both negative in the 3rd quadrant so sin = opp / hyp = - root(21) / 5 and co = adj / hyp = 2/5.
