How to sound like Deftones - White Pony [Snare Drum Recreation]

The video shows my process to reverse-engineering a drum tone from scratch. From frequency analysis to identify the fundamental note of the drum, to drum size, shell type and drum head selection, tuning, and also some mixing processes, we end up with a pretty awesome result and learned a few things along the way!
White Pony is truly a seminal record and one that has continued to influence my musical choices since the first time it entered my ears. The combination of Abe Cunningham & Terry Date truly created something special on this record.
Who should we do next?

Man, drummers that can record are a blessing. No magical thinking, only straight to the point pragmatic approach, bravo!

I’d love for this kind of video on David Sandstrom’s (of Refused) drum sound on the album The Shape Of Punk To Come. Not just the snare, but the toms too… both are absolutely outstanding. The kick sounds good when the rest of the band cuts out, but gets lost in the mix and winds up being felt more than heard

If you decide to do the video, I DM’d a few of the producers on that album. At the time, I think I had maybe a year of trying to produce my own music under my belt so I didn’t really ask the best questions, but Eskil Lovstrom was kind enough to answer some of those newbie questions. When I realized some time later that I should have asked better questions, I tried to ask some follow up questions but he understandably never responded. Here’s what I got, so hope it helps! - A couple of kits actually but the main kit was a DW kit 22"/14"/16"/18" and some pretty big cymbals. The other drums were used for special sound such as in the jazzy mid 8 in The Deadly Rhythm - Memory fails a bit but during that time we used quite a bit of tube-mics and I know for sure that Manley Ref C was used (as a mono amb for the kit maybe 1 m in front of the kickdrum) and Microtech geffel (tube) was also inwolved, probably as ambience-mics in the studio - A studio that is roughly 85 sq-meters. Quite "woody" the actual room.

Great video as always! Nailed the sound, and hey, no matter how you achieve it, as long as it sounds great, there is no "weird way" to do things, especially art. I think what Terry did on White Pony, specifically Digital Bath, is one of the greatest mixes of all time. Very much represents the period of time it was created in since it sounds so "natural" and "familiar", but it's also timeless, fresh and never gets old...a bit weird, put this way, but that's my interpretation of it, lol! Digging the verbs of the room mics, that's very reminiscent of Terry's sound too!
@EliGreenDrums
@EliGreenDrums Месяц назад
Thank you mate! I subscribe to the notion of “if it sounds good, it’s correct” - but there were definitely a few choices that were a less efficient way of getting to the end result haha. But definitely happy over all!

You are doing God's work with this video. I appreciate you sharing your process, as while it's great to find and recreate the iconic Abe snare sound, you've also shared a lot of Abe/ Deftones- inspired snare tones for any us of inspired by this music, and gave me a great reference for my own music too!

@@EliGreenDrums ArtofDrumming did a Black Album video and he NAILED the kick and toms, but did not nail the snare, no samples. Martin Krarup has a Sad But True drum cover where he nailed the snare, kick, and cymbals, but did not nail the toms, used room samples. Lauten microphones just released a video where they went to the drum room the Black Album was recorded in, with the actual engineer who did it, and surprise it sounded almost exact. I don’t know if it’s possible to get everything right without a huge ass room… I think that Avenged Sevenfold “Shepherd of Fire” did the Black Album drum sound better than the Black Album, that’s right I said it! Check it out if you haven’t heard it! If it took 3 weeks to get the Deftones sound, hopefully the Black Album sound wouldn’t take so long since these other guys have come reasonably close, maybe you could borrow some techniques from them!
