Hello, everyeone!
Today, I'm with the special guest, Glaswegian Laura who's living in Busan, South Korea,
and I'm going to be talking about Glasgow dialect, Glasgow accent and Scotland, and it's gonna be like a bit of the Accent Challenge!
I'm so pleased that I've now finally had a Glaswegian chat with a real Glaswegian!

My godson of Scottish - Korean parentage lives in Edinburgh speaks Korean (his mum's native language) but never hides his Scottish accent, his mum was educated at the University of St. Andrews speaks 5 languages namely Korean, English, Welsh, Scottish Gaelic and German. His dad my friend comes from a Gaelic speaking family in the Highlands.

I think it's funny how British people tend to change or "normalise" their accent for radio/telly or when talking to other people. In Norway we don't usually do that, so whenever I go abroad and meet Scottish people I tend to have a stronger Scottish accent than them. (My dad's Scottish and that's where I learned to speak English.)

I find it annoying, People still call Scottish and English British people , We are British for tax and travel documents , Our nationality is Scottish and English

@@conkadonk4976 The nationalities may be Scottish and English, but Scottish and English people speak British English. Just like Norwegians, Swedes and Danes all speak Scandinavian languages. The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland is still also a nation.

Glaswegian is like a completely different language from the rest of the uk. I went to London a few years back and I forgot where I was and started speaking in my broad glaswegien accent. Nobody could understand a word I was saying.

I totally agree with Billly when he said Scottish has some italian sound...As an italian i can say the accent and the tone is similar to some northern italian dialects.

she does have a Glaswegian accent.. she just doesnt speak like a bam (which is what most folks in Maryhill are) I'm from Greenock, so we have the same accent and just as many bams too

blad90 you’re very correct although Edinburgh accents and slang are as good as they come the perfect version of English and also has got its own linguo but still sounds very Scottish but much different to anywhere else in Scotland

The rolled or trilled r is not just a glaswegian trait, it's a general scottish one...i think that areas near fife, dundee and aberdeenshire are much more tapped than the west coast

'Gonnae no dae that' is very glaswegian though, the rest of lowland scotland would traditionally say 'dinna dae that' where dinna/dinnae means don't

Love this - so, so good! XD The thing about 'wh' might be regional as well, since 'whitey' (slang for vomiting, as in 'doing a whitey') I've heard normally said with the same 'w' as in 'water'. I've heard that Glaswegians tend to speak fast and a bit nasal, like New Yorkers and Chicagoans. Interesting how Billy has almost an RP British accent

글래스고에 있는 유학생이에요! 학교에서는 글래스고 사투리를 많이 들을 일은 없지만 상점에 가면 장난 아니에요..ㅋㅋㅋ저는 이 말이 너무너무 싫은데 여기서 보니까 뭔가 굉장히 반가운 거 같기도 하네요..ㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋ쏘우ㄹㄹ뤼~ㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋ영어가 아니라 그냥 어디 유럽언어 같은 느낌이랄까..로라님 넘 재밌으시고 좋으신 분 같아 보여용😍

Actually the "wh" sound Scotland uses is the correct pronunciation, just in most parts of the world that sound changed into a "w." Funfact. The "wh" sound used to be spelled "hw," that's why the Old English word for "what" is "hwæt"

I live right in the middle of Glasgow and Edinburgh so I have a bit of both of their accent so people are like are you from Glasgow or Edinburgh I can’t tell and I’m like I’m from right in the middle mate

You are right. "keek", for example, comes from Dutch and many Dutch settled the Lowlands of Scoland. Scots has influences from Norse, Anglo Saxon, Gaelic and Norman French, too. Scots is a dialect and some argue a different language.

I love the glaswegian accent, but I grew up with it from my grandmother and her three sisters. My father can only understand every other word, but she was the only one I would let read to me after I could do it for myself. I could listen to it for hours.

The fact she says Irn Bru instead of Irn Bru makes me know she’s not from Glasgow City. If you’re from Glasgow city you’ll get the difference I’m getting at just from reading this. It’s pronounced more like Eyeorn Bru.

Laura's accent is 100% North Glasgow!. P.S Maryhill is Glasgow metro. The slang is like listening to The White Heather Club or watching Isa in Still Game. Billy sounds like a chav.
