In real life tanks did often use all metal tracks. Rubber composite ones that are applied as pads onto the metal parts appeared to prevent roads being destroyed (and other benefits, including weight and less noise). The composite is a very very dark grey,almost black. However this Land Raider we can clearly see is just metal, there's no "pads" for it. So you made a call that looks best for the model!

@@MediocreHobbies Good point by Retro above, I would just add that the metal of the actual tank tracks (now and in the past) is never silver, more like a dark brown or even black matte, from surface oxidation of the steel, from the natural wear and tear, or even from factory paint when they are new. Skilled armour modellers (Night Shift, Rick Lawler, Mike Rinaldi and many many others) use such dark colours (dark grey or dark brown-rust-grey) as the first colour for the tracks, then followed by lots of weathering by earth coloured pigments and acrylic washes and enamel washes (you can go to town here) and only at the very end they add some silver or steel colour to the parts of the tracks that protrude and come into contact with the ground, or metal to metal contact surfaces etc. But your result is really great even starting with metal silver for the tracks, and after all, this is the 40k Universe so who knows what weird metal alloys they are using 🙂 if it looks good (and it does), go for it! 🙂

Don't worry about how things "should" look. Always paint it how YOU want it to look. I like to do my tracks black. I then rub silver weather powder over it with my finger. Then any environmental weathering on top.

Everything looks great. Going to try the stipple method with my 40K World Eaters rhino. One thing though that could be improved... you've got some pretty serious silvering on your decal. That's from not applying a gloss before you put it on. The silvering is trapped air in the tooth of the mat finish. Gloss coat, decals, matt coat is the way to make decals look painted on.

Great work mate, you have done the mini proud. In answer to your question on tank tracks brand new track for the majority of British Armoured Vehicles are made of metal with rubber compasit track pads fitted. The rubber pads serve multiple purposes such as reducing vibration, track noise on tarmac roads and improve stopping distances. Some of the larger vehicles such as the Challenger 2 Main Battle Tank has replaceable rubber pads where as smaller vehicles such a a Scimitar Combat Vehicle Reconnaissance (Tracked) CVR(T), have the rubber pad integrated. Some such as the Viking used by the Royal Marines are all rubber. As for colour, fresh from the factory track, comes in lengths that need to be assembled by hand commonly know as "Track bashing" amongst crew members (read blood, sweat and general hard graft) and are covered in a almost tar like black coating to prevent corrosion.while stored outside on pallets. The track will not spend long looking in that condition and will take on a more dirty, grimy looking colour with even the possibility of light surface rust dependent on the environment that is is operating in and of course mud and dust. . Basically, after a short time at war they wold look just like the great job that you did. 🦾

For my rhino, I base coated the tracks in black, then halfway between dry brushed and painted them with leadbelcher, then drowned them in agrax earthshade, then dry brush stippled on the parchment and burnt sienna that I use for my Black Legion's bases. It looks OK sitting on a table a few feet away, but I'm not thrilled with it. You go way farther with the weathering and pigment powders than I prefer, but the 30k/40k universe is way over the top, and it fits the universe, tells the story you're trying to tell, and is well executed so I respect the decision to do it; it's just not my style. You've also got the added difficulty of trying to make them look good on camera that I don't have to worry about so "going overboard" on the weathering and pigments to make sure they show up on camera is fully justified.
@MediocreHobbies
@MediocreHobbies Год назад
Thank you for the kind words. Yes on camera is important. And the weathering is overboard on these projects as I’m basing them on tera during siege so there wrecked.

So far nearly finished painting a proteus and a typhon for my 40k space wolves, with a spartan next in the queue. Not 100% sure how i will do the tracks yet. The tracks are based coated metal but probably will do multiple black and brown washes to weather them down considerably. Cheers again bud.

Satin varnish + filter washes to tone and harmonise base colours. Matt varnish + grime, oil, corrosion, dust, mud effects! Season with weather power last ; )

Hey dude loved your video, I wanted to chime in about tank tracks, I was a US Army M1 tanker. Modern tanks, specifically ones from Western nato countries and America use a hybrid type track. They are made of solid steel with rubber track pad inserts. When we get them in huge 5 ton bundles per side they are coated in a black protective paint. As you would imagine with use this paint is worn away especially if you are operating on asphalt. Like me in Iraq. When comparing a fantasy model it’s like comparing apples to oranges, but I’d say 40k style tanks have tracks that are reminiscent of what I personally worked with. That said Age of darkness style tracks remind me more of World War One tanks or the actual tractors they are based off of. They were also solid metal most likely coated to protect them from corrosion but they saw heavy use in open fields, and so would be black and caked with mud. As a hobbyist that’s trying to be “realistic” as possible I’d say it depends on where your tanks are operating, if they are on soft ground more terrain caked in there but if they are cruising the streets of a city, probably almost a polished metal on account of the friction of the tracks beating on the asphalt. Hope this helps friend.

I loved the way that stippling trick looked on the Rhino and I love it on this Land Raider. It's really quick and gives a great look. The weathering with the pigment creates the illusion it's been fighting for a long time and they haven't had the time to hose it down in a while. It works. I believe modern tracks are a fancy composite material nowadays, but Warhammer 40k has always borrowed a lot from WW1 in particular with the tank designs (sponson weapons fell out of favour after WW1 because of them being useless in most directions and being a weak point on the tank.) So steel threads make a lot of sense aesthetically.

I think as miniature painters, we paint for visual interest. I think most tank tracks in reality are black, but that wouldn't be very appealing. Same with guns. Look at all modern guns, they are all black or tan. Very few guns have a stainless steel finish, but we do that to break up the color of the gun. That and I think people equate gun barrels as a steel look /, rather than just black

Love the old stipple technique with the Artis Opus Series D brushes as it's how I've been doing all my my heavy armour for my Blood Angels 30K army. The silver tracks always look too clean for my tastes as I prefer a darker look to tank tracks. The weathering does a lot to pull it back, although even there I think I would have gone for a darker powder? Looking at photos of real world tanks the tracks all basically are black with occasional silver highlights showing through caked on mud... But then 40K has never really been that interested in 'real world' and so go with what you think looks best. :)
