That was a great video. My takeaway from this: getting one MPH over the Freddy Couples swing by all that effort is not worth it. I’d just stick with Freddy.

I noticed that when you "Fred Couples" the swing, your head seemed to be more centered throughout the swing. Could that stable head have contributed to speed increase?

Paul, I really don't think the head steadiness has much to do with speed at all!

hpw about swinging the arms faster from the top???

If you can do it effectively, it will add speed. Some folks do some really "interesting" stuff when trying to do this.

Correct me if I am wrong but it seems to me like the most efficient and least strain on the body was the swing where you just lifted the hands and arms up and got 85 mph. It doesn't seem like 1 more mph is worth the wear and tear on the back. BTW I get that pain in my back in the exact same place as you and when I really over due it ,it works it's way around into my ribs.

Most students actually end up turning just enough with that swing!

Nice video JD. Noticed your lead arm breaks a bit when you try and get that club higher (buttons up). Mine breaks a lot. Maybe flexibility. Maybe swinging too much inside. Not sure. Wonder what your comments are? Great vids - simple to understand - you teach like we practice and think - one of the best - keep it going......

I know in my case a couple of shoulder surgeries and a lack of flexibility make it very difficult to keep the left arm straight, but over the years, many incredible golfers had the elbow bent at the top. Check out Fred Couples and Jordan Spieth.

John, you mentioned at the end to get the club head speed faster, is that mean i have to hold the grip light in order to move the club head? btw, great swing and video . thank you sir..

Yes, grip pressure is quite firm at the transition, and lessening at impact.

John! Holy Crap, that was an excellent video on lengthening your backswing to attain more club head speed and distance.

Up higher is not necessarily a good concept. If it leads to upper arm and chest disassociation and lead arm abduction it is not good! I would suspect on those swings you "felt" like you were swinging higher you may have maintained width between your hands and chest/right shoulder better. I wonder how you are turning when you say you are trying to make a bigger turn. If you are experiencing more side to side tilting or vertical extension of your spine when you are trying to turn that would explain why your back hurts. I would suspect if your right side pulled back behind you in a purely perpendicular direction you would not experience the back pain. If you stand up vertically tall and straight and pull your right shoulder blade, right lat, right oblique, and right hip directly behind you in a perpendicular direction does that hurt your back? I'm guessing it won't. I suspect when you are turning from your address position over the ball your changing posture, tilting, or both, and that is causing unnecessary changes on your vertebrate. Were you moving your grip away from you in transition like you advocated back on your June 8th 2021 video, or did you drop/forget that concept by the time you filmed this October 2021 video? 😏😜 I'm thinking that could have potentially given you more speed...

perhaps for some that's true, but the physics say the farther the grip gets from the ball, the faster we can swing.
