You guys ask me all the time why I use contrast paints the way I do, and not the way they are 'supposed' to be used...well this is exactly why! It is So. Much. Quicker. Time is money, especially if you're only getting an hour or so painting time a night, and more and more models start piling up on your backlog. If you're doing a single model, it might not seem like it makes a huge difference, but when you multiply the time saved over an entire army...you'll never go back to 'normal' base coats again!

Really good comparison. I wasn't as worried about the time as much the quality difference, but you've shown that quality isn't sacrificed at all with a HUGE time saving. Thanks!!!

The thing I love about this is you can easily combine techniques. In your case, if the basecoated skin looks better there's nothing stopping someone from doing that for the skin and use contrast for the other parts.

I don’t use your style because I enjoy the style I’ve developed over the years. It’s slow but I haven’t played a game in years and I do it because I enjoy the process but I love watching your videos. It’s super relaxing and for new players looking to get armies painted it’s just about the best I’ve seen on RU-vid.
@MediocreHobbies
@MediocreHobbies Год назад
That's totally understandable, there's different elements of the hobby that appeal to everyone, and if you enjoy the painting process and don't need the speed part to get models done for games, just take your time! I love that you still watch the videos anyway though, thanks so much, really appreciate that!

Great sculpt. I like the contrast one better. The shadows in the recessess of the cloth and earthen arms pop a little more. The skin tone on the one on the right is warmer, and I can understand how that would be a personal preference. Either way, I want this as my next D&D character.

Oh great to hear you’ll try it! If you have any questions let me know! Even mentally it’s great to see how much quicker you see your models with paint on them rather than looking at a lot of grey plastic. Remember as well you can always get them to base coats and then go back at any time to layer them up.

Not even the time saving but the fact You can kind of easily shade and highlight these as the contrast shows where to basically put down the highlights 🥰. I never liked the look of Contrast on itself, however using them as base, giving them possibly a bit of shading and finishing with normal base or layer paints as highlight looks like such a nice paint-by-numbers way of doing it.

Some really good points you've made in your video. You're normally my go-to when it comes to painting recipes. For me, it comes down to accessibility and time. A lot of the other content creators are using paints which aren't easy to get a hold of or paints that I might only use once for that one particular model; contrast paints are a lot easier to get a hold of. You've really hit on the mark with an equal balance of quality and quantity when it comes to miniature painting.
@MediocreHobbies
@MediocreHobbies Год назад
Thank pal. And I 100% agree with the accessibility of paints. I have a pet peeve with painting videos that require 47 different paints from 11 different companies. It makes them so unapproachable.

Good video. You find a lot of people don't appreciate the value of their time and even after you've explained it some people still won't get it. I've got a Speedpaint Mega Set 10 hours of my time at work would give me change from that easily. So that argument is a slam dunk for me and once you have the technique down you continue to save 10 hours or thereabouts for a project. Admittedly people don't need a mega set as they'll find they have favourite go to colours for certain bases. I bet you have a set of Favourites... That might be an interesting video? What also might be interesting is what you change your base for flesh to? The only issue for me is that sometimes with your base and a wash you create a really nice colour - to me - which you then cover and or flatten out a bit. However that's personal taste not an issue with the technique. I think a Nurgle Space Marine was one where I thought some of the darker bits after a shade could have been left. However you did say to leave a comment if you'd like to see a dirtier Nurgle Marine. I for one would. 🙂 Another one is Khorne I think the red you use and the shade creates a 'God Tier' - Khorne - bloody red which I would leave a lot of as well. Reasoning for me is Chaos armour is more organic as it becomes part of them - I think when the shade is on you create that organic effect - and I'd want to create a visual difference between Khorne and say Blood Angels. The Imperial armour I think lends itself to a flatter approach anyway. Again though this is personal taste the technique clearly works. It's just adapting it to personal tastes. 🙂 Your explanations and logic are sound as well. I commented on another video where you explained why you do what you do, it's good, insightful and I find it interesting as well. 👍👍👍

That’s for taking the time out for that message. I agree 100%. And yes I understand sometimes the layer stage of over done can take some of the punch ought of a scheme. It’s just time and practice to fix it.

I do agree with the points you made in this video. I happen to be painting up a Fyreslayers army right now and have not used the contrast paints I bought a while ago so though this army would be my contrast only army. I have found it easy and nice to be able to paint up 1 model in about less than an hour to table top quality very nicely. Time wise this method for sure is helping allow me to paint more when I only have a few hours in a week to do so. I did like the comparison of showing time and how over a longer period the amount of time could be subsantial. Thanks

Totally agree with your views on painting time. I mostly actually paint historical miniatures, but I'm here cos the techniques you show are as valid in that field, and I'm zooming through 1870 French at the moment. I think really I'm learning two things here, how to paint to a high table top standard quickly, but also, how to NOT be intimidated by large and complex models. So, I'm really happy here!

Very interesting video, I think I’ve said before when contrast was first released I couldn’t get on with them at all, as it’s such a different technique to what I had grown up with and been using for years. But thankfully watching your videos has effectively taught me how to use it so now I incorporate it more and more, and yes it has definitely allowed me to speed up some areas of my painting. Other arenas I still labour over as I prefer the result much like your opinion of the skin in this video. So I think it’s about choosing what you feel is best for each stage, which is certainly what I’m doing now and it’s nearly all thanks to you and your videos, so thanks Andy 🙂

This is very much my experience as well. My necrons used to be a bit of a slog since the dark metal of thier joints and inner skeleton took really long to achieve with two coats of Iron Warrior steel and a coat of nuln, but swapping the Iron Warriors for the new AP broadsword silver and the nuln for basilicanum grey speed it up radically since the paints are easier to apply and allowed me to skip a step while getting a better dark metal. Not to mention how much easier things like gauss, plasma, lenses and power weapons become.

Maybe I am doing something wrong, but the contrast method is nor forgiving of mistakes. With standard basecoats you can go back and forth as much as needed. If you make a mistake with the contrast there is not really a way to fix it besides the normal base coating. And if you make a mistake with metallics even tougher.
@MediocreHobbies
@MediocreHobbies Год назад
Of your planning on layering them that’s where the mistakes shall be fixed so I think it can be as forgiving.

I always appreciate the fact you start with contrast because i get options. Do i like how this paint or detail looks at the basecoat stage? Quite often I do. Is the next step a reasonable challenge? Yes, and im happy to take one or two on. It even helps with what i dread, skin tones and youve opened up my willingness to try more miniatures with that detail as i feel comfortable at the base stage, and you show me what i could achieve with practice. @MediocreHobbies
@MediocreHobbies Год назад
Watch the whole video, I think you missed a bit😄 I’d always layer over both anyway! The idea is saving time where you can, and if most people put down a base coat and then shade it, then layer it, the time saved with contrast paints vs normal base coats is still time saved. There’s no extra work if you use contrast paints, and for many of my contrast paint space marines I don’t even need to layer them.
